This isn't correct. For a normal certificate of marriage not taking place in a
C of E church, one must give three weeks notice to the local registrar of marriages. He then displays the application outside his office. However these are not the banns. Banns are read in church. Contacting author Philip Roth
#general
Masnick, Burt <masnick@...>
My name is Burt Masnick and I have reason to believe that I may be
related (distantly) to author Philip Roth (Portnoy's Complaint, Goodbye Columbus, etc). A first cousin remembered distinctly that the family had been invited to a "Roth" wedding in the early 1940s and my sister recalled that she was startled to find a character surnamed Masnick in one of his books (still trying to find out which book). Does anyone know how I could get in touch with (or research getting in touch with) the noted author to question him on this possible connection? Thanks in advance. Researching ANTANIR, AXELRAD, BILLIG, BLITZ, BROWNSTEIN, FINKELSTEIN, LEITNER, MASNICK, MESHNICK, MESNICK, PAKMAN, SCHMUKLER. Burt Masnick BJMasnick@aol.com

"Suess," Suessel" (Zissel), and Suesslein" . . . .There was a thread in this newsgroup some time ago regarding the kinnui of the name Siskind, which I would guess is of the same origin as the ones that you mention. It is frequently connected with the name Alexander. The theory as to the origin of this connection that I espoused at the time, which no one supported or contradicted, is that the name Alexander in some languages (e.g. Arabic) becomes Iskander, which kind of has a similar sound to Siskind. Although this theory may not be correct, the kinnui Siskind => Alexander definitely is very common. Nat Reiss reiss@rci.rutgers.edu
