Is there a NE'EMAN family that was NEIMAN/NAIMAN (or similar) from Poland?
#general
Stan Goodman <sheol@...>
As you can see >from the signature block below, NEJMAN is one of the major
names in my family background. (NEJMAN and NAJMAN, or with I instead of J, are all the same name.) A common surname in Israel is Ne'eman (meaning "Faithful"). I wonder if any (or all, for that matter) of the bearers of this name have Hebraicized one of the above names to produce this surname, and if their families originate in Poland, specifically in Lomza Gobernia. I would be grateful for any information that might lead me to members of my family that did not emigrate to the US at the end of the last century, but who made it to Israel more recently. ------------- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel (Remove "takeout" >from domain; replace "sheol" with "stan". Sorry) Searching: NEACHOWICZ, NEJMAN, ISMACH, ROKITA: Lomza Gubernia, Poland HERTANU, ABRAMOVICI, LAUER: Dorohoi District, Romania GRISARU, VATARU: Iasi, Romania See my interactive tree (requires Java 1.1 or better): http://www.hashkedim.com [You can download Java 1.1.6 >from my site, if you don't have it]

Book on Borisov

David M. Fox <fox@...>
Dear Borisov Researchers:
I received the following message which I think would be of interest to you: Subject: book on Borisov Sent: 9/26/98 8:45 PM Received: 9/26/98 9:45 PM From: Rav Eliyahu Tavger, eliyahu@tekhelet.co.il To: Risa Heywood, risah@ibm.net David Fox, fox@erols.com Dear Coordinators of Belarus SIG, You probably already heard of Mr. Alexander Rosenbloom, a citizen of Borisov (who lives now in Israel). He has for the past eight years been busy gathering information on the Jews of Borisov and has put out several pamphlets on the subject. It can maybe be said of him that today he is the biggest expert on the history of the Jews of Borisov and its surroundings. Recently, he typed into the computer a full book summarizing all of his knowledge and wants very much to publish it (in Russian). He needs for this $1000 and has asked for my help in this. I want to ask you whether you have an idea of support for this important project and if it is worth investing in an English translation. Sincerely, Eliyahu Tavger David M. Mental Illness
#general
Claire Petersky <petersky@...>
While people have discussed other inheritable illnesses as a means of
tracking down genealogical information, I was wondering if anyone has used mental illnesses. I was talking with someone who I believe is my 3rd cousin. After much discussion, he hesistatingly revealed that his grandfather was mentally ill, and so his father spent a fair bit of time in foster homes growing up. While this was a painful piece of family history for him to bring up, it clinched for me that we were indeed related. I could then bring up the cousins that I knew also had or now have mental illnesses, and he could see that this was not a personal shame of some sort, but rather something that could be attributed to heredity. This conversation I had though brought up more issues for me to consider. How were mental illnesses regarded in "the Old Country"? (the Old Country in this case being Latvia) How about suicide? Is there a way I can use this bit of medical family history to better draw in the blanks on the family tree? As always, many, many thanks for your help. This newsgroup has been incredibly helpful, over and over again. -- Claire Petersky

Sutro Library Phonebooks
#general
Alan H. Rosen
To: Any Northern California Researcher
I just visited Sutro Library in San Francisco and found that much to my disappointment, their wonderful collection of old phonebooks has been placed in storage. These were phonebooks >from various cities and various years. They are no longer available at all. (SOB!) Evidently they were placed in storage with the hope that some society or benefactor will have them microfilmed. Alan H. Rosen Carmel Highlands, California
