1932 Ponevezh Video
#belarus
Harold Rhode <hrhode@...>
By now, many of you have received your copies of the Ponevezh video
- the one which shows Jewish life in Ponevezh taken in 1932 by a man who went back to visit his family. The film also contrasts life then with what remains there now. The video is very moving; it includes portions >from the Ponevezh Jewish cemetery, which the Soviets destroyed in 1972 and used the broken-up gravestones to construct a wall in downtown Ponevezh. The video also includes footage of many Jews coming out of the Ponevezh Yeshiva - one by one so that those of us who had relatives there might be able to identify family members. There are still some copies left, if anyone still hasn't gotten copies. This video is a must for anyone researching Jewish life in Lithuania and Belarus. The video is also avaiable on the PAL European Video System as well. Send checks for $18.50 ($15.00 + $3.50) for handling in the US to: H. Mechanic 490 Duryea Terrace West Hempstead, NY 11552 Yours, Harold Rhode MODERATOR'S NOTE: Although Ponevezh is not in Belarus, it is close to the border and some Belarus families may have had branches in nearby Lithuania. The video may give you some idea of what a shtetl in the region looked like even if it is not your shtetl.

I was hoping & still am that they got out of there & fled elsewhere. Well, at least there name was not on the Riga list. I will defeinitely check out the book thru amazon.com. I recall a friend of the family who came frommy mother's town of Smiltene, near Riga saying the Russians destroyed the town. Yet it is stil on the map. I received e-mail saying that Latvians themselves may have killed Jews before the war began. There are so many stories yet to unfold. Thank you for all your helpful info! I will try to check out the camps you mentioned also. I hope the internet sites on the Holocaust can provide some info. Thank you again for all your help! Best of luck on your research. Re: Sources for NYC obits
#general
Barbara L. Sieving <Sieving@...>
I have had many family members who were not "famous". I have
found an obit for almost every family member whom lived in NYC in the NY Times. Once I have figured out the day they died I check the NY Times obits 3 days following their death. Nine times out of ten I find them. Most of the time the obit tells me very little that I did not already know. I have made copies of them for my records. I had a family member die September 7, 1904 and I could not find is obit....I was reading the paper for that day (it was small in those days) and found an article about his death...he committed suicide in a bar on Columbus Av....a family secret uncovered. If a family member died of unusual circumstances...you may even find an article about them. The following papers were alive and well in NYC during the indicated dates: Brooklyn Eagle (1880-1934), New York Hearld Tribune (1850-1950), NY Sun (1880-1950), NY World (1880-1931), NY Hearld (1880-1923), NY Tribune (1880-1923)and of course the NY Times. The only paper that is commonly held in public libraries and universities is the NY Times. You may be able to get microfilm of these other papers from a public library in NYC...or inter library loan. I do notknow if any of these papers have their obits indexed. Hope this info helps someone, Barbara Sieving sieving@worldnet.att.net Colorado Springs, CO Searching for: MIRISCH, MORRIS, KAIM, LEVY,ROSENTHAL, APPEL, SCHAUL, MUGLESTON, COHN, COHEN, SCHNELL

CATCH 22? How would you proceed?
#general
Howard M. Relles <rellesh@...>
10 Meinhardt females were born in NYC >from 1934 to 1944 (according to
the NYC Index of Births in the New York Public Library). Two of these would be my second cousins; their father would be Edward Meinhardt; I don't know their mother's name. Assuming, as is usual, that the father's name is listed on the Birth Certificates, I should be able to identify which are my cousins >from these. But according to the person I spoke to at the Bureau of Records and Statistics of the Dept. of Health for NYC (125 Worth St., NY, NY 10013; 212-788-4520), I cannot see these records or even ask them to check for which would have Edward as the father unless I can first prove that I am related (perhaps even that I am the parent) to the child. But I can't prove which ones I'm related to until I find which have Edward for the father. Have I hit a dead end? Any suggestions? Sincerely, Dr. Howard M. Relles Schenectady, NY

Hi!
My wife's parents came >from the Kamenetz Podolia area, either Krasna or Vinnitza. Their name was VINNITSKI. Trying to locate info on them has been difficult because when they came here, some came before WW I and were boarders so cannot locate them in census. Remainder came after 1920, and do not have locations for them. Any help would be appreciated since I am new at this work. Have done better on my fathers side. TIA, Eli C. Hecht Syosset, NY

Last month, I visited my grandmother Rivka Grozen's grave in the
Oshmaner Brothers' plot in Mt. Judah Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. I found the grave, which is supposedly under pertual care, as well as the rest of the cemetery in deplorable condition. When I complained to Cypress Hills cemetery, they angrily told me that Mt. Judah was not part of their system, that it was a "JEWISH CEMETERY" and that they would NOT give me the appropriate address!!! To whom do I direct my disappointment about the condition of the cemetery? Sheldon I. Clare
