Yizkor Book Project, July 2016
#belarus
Lance Ackerfeld <lance.ackerfeld@...>
Shalom,
The Yizkor Book Project in July was characterized by a great deal of updates as you will see below. It is always encouraging to see the projects make progress - step by step - till the final goal is reached and the complete Yizkor book is translated. This amazing progress is due to the untiring determination of the coordinators leading these projects and they certainly deserve our salute for all that they do. In the individual Yizkor book projects, the blue links appearing in the table of contents of each project lead to the articles that have been translated. I'm quite often asked about why articles that don't have blue links can't be read and if a paid subscription is required to see the "hidden" articles. No, there is no charge for reading the articles that have been translated and, on the contrary, and our basic aim is to allow free, global access to everyone for the translated Yizkor book material. So if the article isn't available and you are interested in reading it, the next logical step would be to assist with financial support in the translation of the article. For this it is worthwhile looking at and donating to the specific Translations Fund project if it is listed on the JewishGen-erosity page (link at the end) or by contacting myself so that I can provide you with an estimate of the cost of translation and you can decide if it's something you are able to take on. For those of you who would like to know more about the Yizkor Book Project and will be at the upcoming IAJGS Conference in Seattle, I warmly recommend you taking part in our Yizkor Book Birds of a Feather meeting. This year it is being led by Max Heffler who is and has been an integral partner in our Yizkor Book team and has a great deal of knowledge and experience regarding the project. For those of you who are going to the conference, I do wish you an excellent and rewarding time whilst you're there. And now for all the changes and additions that were carried out in the Yizkor Book Project over July. We have also added in one new entry: - Berestechko, Ukraine (There was a town...memorial book of Beresteczko, Boremel and vicinity) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Berestechko/Berestechkoh.html [Hebrew] We have continued to updated 29 of our existing projects: - Bender, Moldova (Bendery Community Yizkor Book) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Bender/Bender.html - Bransk, Poland (Brainsk; Book of Memories) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Bransk/Bransk.html - Briceni, Moldova (Brichany: its Jewry in the first half of our century) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Brichany/Brichany.html - Brody, Ukraine (An Eternal Light: Brody in Memoriam) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/brody/brody.html - Capresti, Moldova (Kapresht, our village; memorial book for the Jewish community of Kapresht, Bessarabia) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Capresti/Capresti.html - Chelm, Poland (Commemoration book Chelm) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/chelm/chelm.html - Czestochowa, Poland (The Jews of Czestochowa) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Czestochowa1/Czestochowa1.html - Czyzew-Osada, Poland (Czyzewo Memorial Book) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Czyzew/Czyzew.html - Golub-Dobrzyn, Poland (In Memory of the Communities Dobrzyn-Gollob) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/golub_dobrzyn/golub_dobrzyn.html - Goniadz, Poland (Our hometown Goniondz) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/goniadz/goniadz.html - Jadow, Poland (The Book of Jadow) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/jadow/jadow.html - Kalisz, Poland (The Kalish book) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/kalisz1/kalisz1.html - Lenin, Belarus (The community of Lenin; memorial book) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/lenin/lenin.html - Less than Human http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/LessThanHuman/LessThanHuman.html - Lithuania (Lite) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/lita2/lita2.html - Pabianice, Poland (The Pabianice Book: A Memorial for a Community) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Pabianice1/Pabianice1.html - Radzyn, Poland (Radzyn Memorial Book) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/radzyn/radzyn.html - Rafalovka, Ukraine (Memorial book for the towns of Old Rafalowka, New Rafalowka, Olizarka, Zoludzk and vicinity) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/rafalovka/rafalovka.html - Rietavas, Lithuania (Memorial book: the Ritavas Community; A Tribute to the Memory of our Town) http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Rietavas/Rietavas.html - Smarhon (Smorgon), Belarus (Smorgonie, District Vilna; memorial book and testimony) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/smorgon/smorgon.html - Sobrance, Slovakia (The Unlikely Hero of Sobrance) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Sobrance/Sobrance.html - Suchowola, Poland (Suchovola Memorial Library of Jewish Communities) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/suchowola/suchowola.html - Tarnogrod, Poland (Book of Tarnogrod; in memory of the destroyed Jewish community) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/tarnogrod/tarnogrod.html - Tovste, Ukraine (Memorial book of Tluste) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Tovste/Tovste.html - Tykocin, Poland (Memorial book of Tiktin) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Tykocin/Tykocin.html - Volodymyr Volynskyy, Ukraine (Wladimir Wolynsk; in memory of the Jewish community) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Volodymyr_Volynskyy/Volodymyr_Volynskyy.html - Vysotsk, Ukraine (Our Shtetl; Vysotsk memorial book) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/vysotsk1/vysotsk1.html - Wyszkow, Poland (Wyszkow Book) http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Wyszkow/Wyszkow.html - Zabrze, Poland (Zabrze Yizkor Book) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Zabrze/Zabrze.html Some important links to note: - This month's additions and updates are flagged at http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/translations.html to make it easy to find them. - All you would like to know about the Yizkor Books in Print Project http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/ybip.html - Yizkor Book Translation Funds http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=23 where your financial support will assist in seeing more translations go online. Updated inventories and other pages on Gesher Galicia website
#galicia
Tony Kahane <tkahane@...>
Gesher Galicia is pleased to announce the significant revision of the
Inventories section, as well as many other pages, of our website. AGAD, the Central Archive of Historical Records in Warsaw The page on our website describing Jewish records at AGAD has been freshly written, at: http://www.geshergalicia.org/agad_fond_300/ - Fond 300 is the major collection of Jewish records at AGAD, with currently 3,219 books of vital records >from former Galicia - all but three of them >from the eastern part. The inventory of Fond 300 is now available as links >from this page in two versions - sorted by town, sorted by file number within the fond. The inventory itself has been much updated >from an earlier version, with recent new additions to the fond included and with the format of the display improved. Importantly, web links to the page images of the record books of Fond 300 - as scanned by AGAD and put onto their website - are included in our own inventory, where available. At present page images for 2,953 of the books in this fond are available. - Fond 424 is the smaller set of Jewish records at AGAD, with 191 files of loose material, in the form of vital record certificates and various community records. We will be uploading an inventory of this fond onto the website in September. The State Archives of Ukraine Gesher Galicia has also significantly updated its description of Jewish records in the Ukrainian state archives. The description and the accompanying revised inventory - again in two forms, by town and by fond and volume number - can be found at: http://www.geshergalicia.org/lviv-archives-jewish-records/ The majority of the material in this inventory is >from Fond 701 in the State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv (TsDIAL), and consists of both registers of Jewish vital records (all but one >from the eastern part of Galicia) and Jewish community records (largely >from the town of Lwow). Also included are a set of books of Jewish vital records (Fond 631) held in the State Archive of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (DAIFO). We have indicated with shading all the files in this inventory that we have already indexed and uploaded onto our All Galicia Database. Other inventories of Jewish records Gesher Galicia is working on the full inventories of Jewish records held in the Przemysl and Rzeszow states archives. We will be uploading these onto the website in the fall. Other improvements to our web pages Over the past few months we have made major revisions to the content, and in some cases the design, of our most frequently consulted web pages (with the home page at: http://www.geshergalicia.org/ ). These include the sections relating to membership and donations; projects; the Galitzianer research journal; members' towns in Galicia; the structure of Gesher Galicia; and parts of some other sections of the site. We hope these revisions to the website will make it easier for people to find the information they are looking for. We will continue to improve other parts of the site over the coming months. Jewish Genners-
My grandmother's family (BROITMAN) survived the pogroms of Savran, Ukraine and fled 400 miles away to Bucharest, Romania c. 1919. In the few years they lived there, family history has it that three of my grandmother's siblings (Moshe, Lisa, Chamiel, all born between 1908 & 1918) died of "water poisoning." It is not clear to me if they died in Becharest or somewhere in between. The family immigrated to Toronto, Canada in Nov 1924 and to the US (Philadelphia then Brooklyn) in 1927. I've found contemporary accounts of the pogroms in that region (link below), but would like to know more about their lives as refugees and more details about the deaths of her siblings. Can anyone suggest sources I might use to find more information and/or more context? Savran Pogrom Info: http://mindfullmeandering.blogspot.com/2013/08/savran-pogrom.html Thank you- Shawn Weil Melrose, MA Looking for: Wahl, Abromowitz, Wilkenfeld (Tarnobrzeg, Poland); Goldner, FIbish (Bivolari, Iasi, Romania); Telefus, Birnberg (Khotin & Medzhibozh, Ukraine); Broitman, Darish (Savran & Olgapol, Ukraine)

Iasi trip planned
#romania
Carol Chaykin <cchaykin@...>
Hello Rom-SIg,
My mother's mother arrived in America with her brother and her stepmother in 1900, and joined my great-grandfather, who had arrived in NYC (also, I believe, in 1900). With the aid of JewishGen, I have located the index records for the graves in the Iasi cemetery of my grandmother's birth mother, and for my grandmother's baby brother. I plan to visit Romania in August, arriving in Bucharest on August 28, 2016. I would appreciate any advice you can offer me regarding doing research in Iasi and/or Bucharest. Thank you very much! Updated inventories and other pages on Gesher Galicia website
#poland
Tony Kahane Chair & Research Coordinator, Gesher Galicia http://www.geshergalicia.org MODERATOR'S NOTE: JRI-Poland has indexed many of the records >from AGAD Fond 300.Most index entries are linked directly to the image or to a nearby image of the record.

Re: Seeking Solomon BENJAMIN - Baltimore, Maryland ? to 1818

My Levi BENJAMIN came to Baltimore about the same time (He's on page 191 of
"The Forerunners", and mentioned in a couple of other places). Levi named his eldest son Solomon (b. 1815, obviously not your Solomon). I wouldn't be surprised if we eventually found a connection. For what it's worth, an unconfirmed family rumor says that our BENJAMINs are related to Judah P. BENJAMIN (US Senator, Attorney General, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State for the Confederacy). *IF* the rumor is true, and *IF* your Solomon is related to our Levi, that might be of interest. - Chuck Culman caculman@comcast.net Mary Beth Engst <mbengst@comcast.net> Wrote: Seeking Solomon BENJAMIN - Baltimore, Maryland ? to 1818 Seeking Solomon BENJAMIN, details below.
