Re: beadle #general

Harold Pollins <pollins@...>

In our London shul (West Ham) the beadle was the name given to the shamass.
In our case during the service he arranged for aliyot, tried to keep order,
handed out siddurim etc. ours was also a mohel and went round collecting
siubscriptions for the shul and Hebrew classes.

Does anyone know what a "beadle" did?

Need contact in Zimbabwe #general

After a year of inquiries, I finally received exact instructions about
obtaining a death certificate >from Zimbabwe. The cost is approximately $5
U.S. which is $20 Zimbabwe currency. The registry there insists upon a bank
draft. The bank draft itself is $25 US!! If anyone is on the list from
Zimbabwe or has close relatives there, I would like to send my letter
requesting the certificate along with US currency to that person and ask
that he/she enclose the Zimbabwe currency and mail the letter. If your
relative there also has e-mail, could you let me know, and I'll post to them
directly. Thank you.

The only Lemberg I am aware of is synonymous with Lvov or Lviv. It used to be
in Galitzia in the old Austrian-Ungarian Empire, and is now situtation in the
Ukraine.

Several Dreyfus family trees were published here and there. Dr Henri Claude
Mars, the expert in DREYFUS families (some American people use to call him
"the greatest Dreyfusologist in the world" ...
Eve,

By any chance, do you know if there is a connection between the French
Dreyfus line and the American one? I speak of Jack Jonas Dreyfus (1885-1972)
whose son was president of the large mutual fund corporation. Jack, Sr. was
married to my great aunt, Virginia Anderson (1896-1982).

There is a book that lists, alphabetically, the names of all passengers who
arrived at the Port of New York in the non-indexed years of the late 19th
century: 1847-June 1897. It was published by a group in Philadelphia.

Can anyone please tell me the name of this directory?

Please reply by private E-mail. Thank you.
