Pace my neighbor Judith Romney Wegner, my cousin Elmer SHARE (1912-1983) was
named for his great-grandfather Eli Mendel BLUESTONE. It never occurred to me
that this was an odd choice of a secular name.

Certainly by 1800, American Sephardim were using secular names that were
indistinguishable >from those of their gentile compatriots, as can be seen by
flipping through Malcolm Stern's compendium. My initial reaction to Shari
Grabill's query was the same as Judith's, but Shari apparently believes very
strongly that her family was originally Jewish. My impression was that this
belief is based in more that a vaguely Jewish-sounding name, possibly in
gleanings >from stories passed down in her family. I don't think the name
itself can provide evidence one way or the other.

I very much agree that this is a wonderful group...sometimes there are small
frustrations, but I believe that they are necessary, as we are not all
interested in the same things or same areas of research, but one never knows
what gem of information discussed at lenght might not some day prove to be
helpful...I have gotten lots of support and good leads and feel I have had the
opportunity often to return the favor, which is a very good
feeling....sometimes I get miffed when some entry of mine is "dismissed" for
various reasons, but it is a small price to pay for the wonderful exchange of
information and support that flow freely in this discussion group.

1925 NYS census: library access on Long Island #general

Steve & Renee Steinig <rsteinig@...>

Regarding the 1925 New York State census for Manhattan, Joan C. Brown
<jcb2502@juno.com> asked:

Should I be able to obtain it through my county's inter-library loan?
As Warren Blatt <wblatt@jewishgen.org> pointed out,

The LDS Family History Library does not participate in inter-library
loan...

Note however that public library patrons on Long Island do have access to
the 1915 and 1925 New York State census for New York metropolitan area
counties >from the Suffolk Cooperative Library System, which owns a set of
these films. Also available >from SCLS are the Soundex and enumeration
films for NY State for the federal censuses through 1920. SCLS
interlibrary loans these films to libraries in neighboring Nassau County,
but not beyond. See <http://www.suffolk.lib.ny.us/census.html> for info.

The NYS census is also available in Manhattan at the New York Public
Library and at the NY Genealogical and Biographical Society.

Searching: Louis E. WOLFSON #general

Jeanne Gold <JeanneGold@...>

Off an on, I've been researching my step-father's family. I was told by my
step-brother, there had been another uncle, Louis E. Wolfson.

This Louis Wolfson was indicted and convicted of bribing Abe Fortas, a
Supreme Court Justice, and that he had a horse that one the National Derby
in the 70's. After searching the web, I was actually able to put together a
bit of this Louis E. Wolfson's family tree (at least I think this is
correct; as well as get the facts straight regarding Abe Fortas).

What I haven't been able to do is determine if this Louis E. Wolfson is in
fact related to the family. If anyone knows this family and can tell me if
there are any connections, I would really love to hear >from you.

This is what I think I know:

1 Hirsch Jacobs
+ Ethel D. ???
2 Patrice Jacobs
+ Louis E. Wolfson
b. 28 Jan 1912, NY or St. Louis, MO
(last known living in Bal Harbour, FL)
3 Steve Wolfson
3 Gary Wolfson
3 Martin D. "Marty" Wolfson
b. 03 Aug 1951, Washington, DC
+ Karla ???
3 Milton Wolfson

Searching: SHENKER from Proskurov (now Khmelnitskiy), Ukraine #general

Goldmacher, Jonathan <jgoldmacher@...>

Well, this didn't take long. Now I've taken on the burden of trying to
link my wife's family with any relatives that may be out there.

The story goes that this SHENKER family was among the many Jews who were
killed during the nasty pogroms in the Ukraine. The family only knows
of two other members who survived. Plus my wife's father, one other
came to America and they, together, are responsible for my wife's very
small family:

1 Unknown SHENKER
2 George SHENKER (b. Proskurov, Ukraine)
m. Isabel SCHWARTZ (b. Hungary)
3 Emanuel Joseph SHENKER (b. 1939 Manhattan, NY)
m. Adrienne Greene (1)
m. Susan Smyth (2)
4 Deborah Isabel SHENKER (1)
m. Gregg Isral SINGER
5 Joshua SINGER
5 Rachel Madeline SINGER
4 Karyn SHENKER (1)
m. Jonathan Jeffrey GOLDMACHER
4 Sarah SHENKER (2)
4 Jordan SHENKER (2)
2 Leon SCHENKER (b. Proskurov, Ukraine)
3 Sandy SCHENKER (b. Manhattan, NY)
m. Harry WEITZ
4 Michael WEITZ
m. Kathleen
4 Rebecca WEITZ
m. Ed RICE

One other survivor fled deeper into Russia and the descendants of this
family recently (within the last 10-15 years) migrated to the United
States and have reunited with my wife's family.

Of course, like all of us, they hold out great hopes that there may be
other cousins out there somewhere. If anything sounds familiar, please
get in touch with me. Thanks!

Such Ashknenazic surnames almost NEVER lack the added "S" (unless of
course they already end in one, like the name Moses, which does not change
when it becomes a surname).
This seems to be correct in the case of Eastern European family names, but
among German Jews it was very common to take a personal name as a family
name without the 's', since before family names became mandatory in the
early 19th century it was common practice to use the father's personal name
as a surname (and later it was used as a middle name by those who had other
surnames).
