An Israeli cousin found references to our shared family line, NEBENZAHL,
in the third volume of Rabbi Meir Wunder's Encyclopedia of Galician Rabbis & Scholars. I found some earlier references to these volumes in the JewishGen archives; at that time the volumes were available only in Hebrew. Has any translation been attempted? Candice Bradley Appleton, WI

Re: Census Method - also Searching ABRAMSON
#general
Matthew <matthew24@...>
Hello Genners,
I thought I should share a method of Census searching I discovered (or have others used it?). I was searching for the family of my g-grandmother in the 1900 census. I knew the names of her siblings and her mother, but I did not know her father's name. By going card by card through the index (skipping every card that was in the wrong county), I was able to find her after about a half hour of searching. She had a common name, Abramson, but this method would be very easy to use on rare surnames. Also, I am searching for descendants of Henry and Rahcel ABRAMSON. Both were born in Russia in 1862. They married c. 1873 and lived in New York until c. 1889 when they moved to Philadelphia. Their children (many of whom also used the name ABRAMS): Kate b. 1884, m. Abe DENNENBERG Harry ABRAMS b. 1886, never married Ida b. 1888, m. Ralph BORMAN Eva ABRAMS b. 1892, d. c. 1924, never married Yetta b. 1894, m. ? INGRAM, first name unknown May (Naomi?) b. c. 1896, m. William WARD Lillian b. 1898, m. Michael SERODY Bea b. c. 1900, m. Joe CAPLAN Please reply privately to matthew24@geocities.com Thanks, Matthew Meisel matthew24@geocities.com http://jewish.genealogy.org

I went to the Libau cemetery with Aleksandr Feigmanis. The cemetery is in
generally good repair. The same family has taken care of it since 1886. The records are intact as well. The caretaker has just been kind enough to clear my ggmother's grave for me, and I will now have it maintained and planted with flowers. Aleks has the lists and the photos of the cemetery. Probably we could get the list for jewgen. I would like to participate as well. I did not know there was a Courland sub-group of Latvia SIG. I would like to know how to work with it. I know GOTTDIENER, but not GOTTESDIENER. The GOTTDIENER family I know were
from Hajdunanas and Debrecen, but of course nearly all Hungarian Jews fromthat part of Hungary orginated in Galicia (see Marton's essay titled the Family Tree of Hungarian Jews in Braham's Hungarian Jewish Studies, Volume 1). There were survivors, and some live in Israel including Moshav Nir Galim. Louis Schonfeld

Searching: GOODMANS in Manchester
#general
David Goldman <davic@...>
Are there any Jewishgenners out there in Manchester England, specifically
in the Prestwich area, who can direct me to GOODMANs who came to Manchester at the beginning of the century? As I have written before, our family changed their name >from KRASINSKY to other names: GRUBERMAN, GOLDMAN and GOODMAN. I would love to find the GOODMANs who we are related to. No one knows where or who they might be, except that their ancestor was also Shneur ZALMAN! PS I want to publicly thank Tom Venetianer who was really helpful with me in getting some things in historical perspective. David Goldman davic@erols.com

Searching: LEVINS, LEVINSKY

I am looking for relatives of my grandfather Reuben LEVINS >from New York.
Reuben was the second of four children of Lev LEVINSKY and Malke, whose last name meant "sunshine". Samuel b. 1898, Reuben b. Aug 1, 1900, Ben and then Eva, dates of birth unknown. Samuel's children included Rose LEVINS, Nathan LEVINS or LEVINSKY and Dorothy, whose married name was HART. Ben's children were Milton LEVINS and Dorothy, who married a sports writer named Tex MAULE. Samuel also had a brother, Sussman LEVINSKY, whose adopted daughter married Felix von DOLKE, a descendant of someone called TheBlack Knight, who left Germany for the US because he was fed up with war in Europe, but no-one remembers when this is supposed to have happened.
