Searching: OLSWANG in the Midwest?
#general
Claire Petersky <petersky@...>
I just chatted with my second cousin once removed for the first time, and
she told me two important pieces of information. First was that the Olswangs started off in New York (now I have a place to look for the naturalization papers) before coming to Seattle. Second was one Olswang didn't make it all the way to Seattle, but stopped somewhere in the Midwest on the way. If you are researching Olswangs, and know of any in Chicago (she thought, just maybe), please let me know. I found this very intriguing. Another thing to research in my copious free time! There has been much recent discussion about the right to federal
information. For MORE than you'll ever want to know, go to < www.pueblo.gsa.gov/ > . Choose "Federal Programs." Then, choose "Your Right to Know." The site contains information, form letters, the whole bit. Claude M. Oulman Butte, Montana

Re: Boston, Mass. Census

Alan Rosenfield <arosen@...>
When I was a boy in the Boston area (around 1940) a policeman came around
every year to take a Census. If memory serves correctly, it was intended to find out whether registered voters listed at the address were actually living there. So I think that the list was turned over to the City Clerk, who maintains the voter lists. When I came of age, I noticed that the name and address of each voter was posted at the entrance to the polling place. Crooked politicians would hire people to go >from precinct to precinct, check the list, and cast votes for dead people and those out of town. When my father returned in 1921 >from working in Warsaw for three years, he found that he had never missed an election. Since I left Boston over thirty years ago, I don't know what the procedure is now. As far as using your information is concerned, I recommend writing to the City Clerk in Boston for a copy of the voter registration card for the person that you are interested in. The ones I received >from Chelsea (same County) contain address, birthplace, naturalization date and place. These were >from the early 1900's. I don't remember what the cost was, somethinbg like five dollars. Many states, including Ohio, purge voter lists frequently. This is a great loss to genealogy since voter registration cards contain a lot of valuable information. Al Rosenfield Columbus OH

Finding information that was provided by my great uncle, Henry Morse,
of Chicago has been indispensible in my genealogical research. Would someone be willing to photograph Henry and his wife Bessie's tombstones? The location is Rosemont Park Cemetery, 6750 W. Addison St., Chicago, IL 60634. Section R, Lot 24, Grave 7 & 8. Please respond privately. I would be most appreciative Jerry Morse

I think genealogists better start objecting to the idea of a census pollFolks, if you want to take sides on an issue, get the facts straight. Re. this particular issue, please note: NO ONE HAS SUGGESTED THAT AN ACTUAL COUNT NOT BE TAKEN! The Census Bureau has proposed a statistical addition to the actual count to catch at least the numbers of those people who are known to be missed in every count. It would make the total a more accurate reflection of the actual population, without in the least measure decreasing the information available to genealogists in 2072. So be for or against the proposal on its merits, but please don't hold up the straw man of loss of genealogical data. This won't happen. George Friedman Champaign, IL

Re: help with faulty URLs

Irene Newhouse <newhoir@...>
I recently tried to access several web sites that fellow Jewish Genners
cited. In the first case, www.awf.wroc.pll/~romek/hobby/cmen.htm (jewish cemeteries in Poland home page)... This site worked about a year ago. It was only in Polish, but had some very nice pictures. Around June I tried accessing again, to print some of the pix & it was GONE. The web master at awf.wroc gave me Mr. Romek's e-mail address, saying the site had been terminated. Mr. Romek wrote back saying he'd had the cemetery site on space owned by his previous employer & was looking for a new host. He has either not found one or given up on the idea. Note that it was in a subdirectory labelled 'hobby'. However, if you do a web search on Wroclaw, you should find another very nice site that has a subsection of scanned old postcards >from Wroclaw, though there's no specifically Jewish content. Cyril & Sandy Alberga <alberg1@...>
If you look at the proposals, no-one, as far as I know, is saying there
won't be a regular census with questions for all and sundry. What they want to do is over and above the usual. After the regular forms are returned (or perhaps at the same time) there would be a (if you will pardon the expression) blitz of selected areas, with real live enumerators going door to door and making return visits if nobody is home the first time. Then, based on the difference in response between the mail-in forms for the area and the in-person interviews, they would adjust the population figures. So, I don't think our children will have anything to worry about, as far as seeing our names in the files. Yours Cyril N. Alberga

Henri Roodveldt/Harm Bron <roodveld@...>
Hi,
I'm looking for members of the Roodveldt family. Most of them lived (and still live) in Amsterdam (Netherlands) But during WW II a lot of them died in concentration camps in Germany, Poland etc. Perhaps some members emigrated to Israel, South America or so. Thanks in advance, Henri Roodveldt roodveld@xs4all.nl(lookout, no "t" at the end of my emailadress!)
