Auschwitz #general

Eve Line Blum <blume@...>

One of my cousins has in his archives a letter sent by registered mail
which was sent by his mother >from Auschwitz in May 1944. At that time, she
was in Auschwitz for about one year, and she never came back.

On the envelope are two stamps with Hitler's face. There are official seals
with the name of Auschwitz camp, the postal registered mark with the name
Auschwitz, the exact address of the sender in the Auschwitz camp, and the
special seal of the Wehrmacht censure (with an eagle and the swastika)
which opened the letter.

Does someone know or has such a sending ? How was it possible to send
registered mails >from Auschwitz ? Someone told me that it was impossible,
and that was probably a false letter sent by the Germans so that the family
could believe that their parent was still alive, while he (or she) was
already dead.

Connecting with Jewish family #general

GRCC Staff <Staff@...>

Hello - I recently became aware that my father's mother was Jewish and
both grandparents were Jewish. He died before I could gain very much
information about his family. It is _very important_ to me to find any
relatives since my father was an only child and his parents died before
he was 15.
The surnames I remember are: ROHR, SASKAWSKI (or LASKA), JAKEL and
WITKOWSKY. The areas >from which they immigrated are Bremen and Hamburg,
Germany in 1771 and 1776. These relatives made their way to Detroit,
MI. My father was born in Tuscola County in MI. He was the owner of a
newpaper business.
My name is Cynthia Bristol and I am located at Grand Rapids
Community College (MI) as a music instructor. My e-mail address is
cbristol@post.grcc.cc.mi.us If you have any information for me
I certainly would appreciate a message >from you.

funeral home info #general

Joyce Peck <Joycekp@...>

I wanted to pass along a tip for getting information, especially for
those just beginning their search. A very helpful Jewish funeral home in
Springfield, Mass., the only Jewish one there, gave me the dates of
death for my paternal grandparents (even though they died about 15 years
before the funeral home started up in business), the cemetery in which
they are buried and a contact person, the plot number and location in
the cemetery and even directions to the cemetery off the highway. You
can't beat that! It may not work in places like NYC where there are many
funeral homes and cemeteries, but most other places probably only have
one (maybe two) Jewish funeral home.

Searching Records in Russia #general

Ellen Terry Kessler <NoSpam-etk@...>

My cousin is going to Moscow in a few weeks and wonders if anyone can
tell him where and how to search records there for information about his
grandparents.

His grandparents left Russia around 1900. He knows the towns or
provinces they were born in. He should be able to have a friend act as
a translator, if necesssary.

Please send any information, to Jason Horowitz at:

Shaul732@aol.com
(that's an "L" before the "7")

Thanks for any help.

By the time your father was in the US Army, members of the American armed
services all had serial numbers. I assume you don't have his ASN. But it
would be surprising if the Adjutant General can't find both the number and
the service record, given the soldier's name, birth date, and date/place of
enlistment (or however he joined the Army). You must have written to the
Adjutant General; has he told you that the record is lost irreceverably?
