I read with excitement the translations that have been made and
the old towns that have been researched.

I am not only making a family tree, which to date, has
approximately 500 people, but I am writing a biography of my parents.
The biography starts with THEIR grandparents, which brings us back to the
middle 19th century. By talking to relatives and doing much research on
lives of the Jew in the Pale of Settlement and Lodz and Kalush, I have
been able to write on the lives of these ancestors. I have enough
information to write about my father's grandparents and parents. I have
enough information to write about my mother's grandparents and my
mother's father. What I lack is information about my mother's mother.

You should at this point be, at least, wondering why I have not
said anything about my mother's grandparents. Well, my mother's
grandparents on her mother's side, are the same as my mother's
grandparents on her father's side. That is correct; my mother's parents
were first cousins

They all came >from the town of Kalush, Austria. You know there
was no Poland at that time. Poland was divided by Russia, Prussia and
Austria between 1772 and 1794. I know a little about the family of
Batzalal and Schprintza Schussler. Batzalal and Yetta were siblings.
Yetta married Usher Kummel (with an umlate over the U ). One of
Batzalal's children was Shimpshon Aaron and one of Yetta's children was
Peral. You figured it correctly. They married. They are my mother's
parents.

I know all of Shimpshon's siblings. I know NOTHING about Peral's
family. Even though I have researched, I have found nothing until
recently. I found out that the Mormon's have a
microfilm KALUSH in IVANO-FRANKIVS'K
Poland- Stanislawow-Kalusz- Church records. Roman Catholic parish
register and transcripts of births, marriages and deaths for Kalusz,
Galizia, Austria; later Kalusz, Stanislawow, Poland, now Kalush, Ivano -
Trankivs'k, Ukraine. Indexed- Latin & Polish. The number of the film is
0766221 Item 1.

I would like to think that the Schussler and Kummel families are
in that film. Unfortunately, I don't read Latin, Polish, or Russian.

My question: Has anyone seen the film?
Has anyone translated the film?
Has anyone heard of the Schussler or Kummel families?
Is there anyone out there who would like to do the
translation?

I look forward to a reply >from anyone. Thanks.

UPDATE ON REVISION LIST ORDERS #lithuania

ELGOLD1@...

Dear LitvakSIG members:

It has been a while since you have received an update of the various uyezd
(district) projects being undertaken, and especially the status of various
orders for revision lists (mostly 1858 revision lists), so I will try to give
you the latest information available:

Lists for SIAULIAI and VILKOMIR (UKMERGE) DISTRICTS have been received and
have been translated. They are now being entered into database format. Very
shortly they will be the first new additions to the All Lithuanian Database.
We are still in need of a few good "inputters" for this raw data. If you can
help speed up this process, please contact our database manager Anne Rothman
<aroth@indy.net> or <ROTHMAN_ANNE_NONLILLY@lilly.com>, or our co-coordinator,
Davida Noyek Handler <dnhiowa@aol.com> to let them know of your availability.

Lists for OSHMIANY DISTRICT have been received and are being translated.
Significant funds are still needed to complete the translation, so please make
your contribution if you have not already done so.

Lists for TRAKAI DISTRICT have been received, but we do not yet have
sufficient funds to pay for the records or begin translation. This is an
urgent need since LitvakSIG has advanced the funds for the records. No records
will be translated until they are paid for. This is a treasure trove of
information for people with families >from Trakai distrcit towns, so I urge you
to make your contributions and get this project underway.

The lists for RASSEIN DISTRICT are now being copied and they are the next
batch we expect to receive >from Lithuania. Additional funds are still needed
for the translation, so if you have been waiting to make your contribution,
please do so now so that we can begin translation as soon as the records
arrive.

We are still trying to determine exactly what records are available for
PANEVEZYS, KOVNO and TELSIAI DISTRICTS. Our contact in Lithuania informs us
that, in these three cases, there may not be as complete a set of records for
1858 as for the other distrcits, so we are looking into other records at the
Kaunas archives (family lists, tax lists, etc). to see how we can supplement
the available revision lists in order to provide our members with the most
complete documentation of their families. We hope to have further information
on these orders shortly.

The DISNA and VILNA DISTRICT groups are still at the stage of collecting
money and we have not placed orders for them yet. We still need some
additional members before we can make a viable order, so please contact the
group coordinators if you can help with this project.

As of now, the VILEJKA, NOVOALEXANDROVSK, and LIDA groups are inactive, and
we do not have a SVENTSION group at all. We would like to get the effort going
to order records for these areas, so if you are interested please contact me
or David Hoffman <DBH12345@aol.com> to volunteer as a group coordinator.

In addition, there are several shetl interest groups. These groups have not
always been coordinated through the LitvakSIG, so I would appreciate if the
coordinators could drop me an email telling me your contact information, and I
will make a list so that our members know how to get in touch with you.

For now, here is the list of active uyezd (district) research groups and
their coordinators:

Siauliai district: Carol Baker <carolcbaker@mediaone.net>

Vilkomir (Ukmerge) district: David Hoffman <DBH12345@aol.com>

Oshmiany district: Sam Arutt <SARUTT@prodigy.net>, Clifford Karchmer
<rabinowitz@juno.com>, and Joanne Saltman <jsaltman@msn.com>

Rassein district: Eric Goldstein <ELGOLD1@aol.com>

Kovno district: Sylvia Nusinov <Curiousyl@aol.com>

Trakai district: Stan Lipson <stanl@turbo.kean.edu>

Telsiai district: Deena Burton <deena@camcom.com>

Panevezys district: Devera and Michael Witkin <dewmhw@pacbell.net>

Vilna district: Joel Ratner <Joelrat@aol.com>

Disna district: Eric Goldstein <ELGOLD1@aol.com>

If anyone has any questions about which group to sign up with, please feel
free to write me at <ELGOLD1@aol.com> and watch for our updated list of
shtetls and uyezds to appear on the LitvakSIG website in the near future. As a
reminer, all contributions to these research groups should be mailed to:

Peggy Mosinger Freedman,
LitvakSIG Treasurer
245 Dalrymple Road
Atlanta, GA 30328
USA

Be sure to note the NAME of your research group (TELSIAI, VILKOMIR, KOVNO,
etc) in the memo field of your check so Peggy knows where to credit the money.

Best,
Eric Goldstein

Hi

I have just joined the Litvak SIG and am searching the name FEINBERG. I was
always told they were >from MARIJAMPOLE, but, after going through the
Lithuanian archives, there was nothing that matched.

My GGF was Isaac FEINBERG, 1833-1921. His wife was Estra Mindla ROZENTHAL.
She was definitely >from MARIJAMPOLE, and I have a lot of information about
ROZENTHAL >from MARIJAMPOLE. Isaac's father was Jacob M. FEINBERG, born ca.
1800. Isaac and "Minnie" had 3 children born in Europe. They were MORRIS
ABRAHAM, born 1859, REBECCA (married KRAMER), born 1862 and MARY (married
LITT), born ca. 1866. They had 3 children in the US, ISRAEL, born 1872, IDA
(married LEWIS) born 1875 and AARON (my gf), born 1877. There may be a
possibility that the family was >from PILVISKIS or KOVNO, but I am not at all

"Ben" - "Bat" - or other ways to differentiate in the "All Lithuania" database #lithuania

DNHIowa@...

Dear SIG:

Here is potentially "thorny" issue that needs discussion, before the Revision
List data is inserted into the newly revised "All Lithuania" database.

No maiden names were given for any of the wives in the 1858 Revision Lists,
nor were any clearly definable Hebrew names. What appears is a
transliteration, in Russian, of the Yiddish names given to the enumerator. It
was felt that some method of differentiating between the various Leahs,
Shmuels, etc., was necessary. The individuals, however, are listed with the
names of the father, and most times of the mother.

The general consensus >from the various inputters has been that we use "bar"
and "bat" with an explanation, in the database introduction, stating that
these MAY NOT be the Hebrew or Yiddish given names, but serve as identifiers
to separate the various Leahs, Shmuels, etc. We are closely following the
fields within the original Revision Lists for consistency, with just a few
fields of our own added for clarity. The fields in our database (for Revision
Lists only) are:

|| Page# || 1850Registration || 1858Registration || Surname ||
Given name || Father || Mother || Age in 1850 || Age in 1858 || Reason
Left || Year Left || Relationship to Head of Household || Spouse ||
Surname2 || Other Comments || Day || Month || Year || Town ||
Uyezd || Guberniya || Record/Publication ||

Currently, we might have listed:

RUDMAN, Shmuel (with his father listed as RUDMAN, Movsha)
RUDMAN, Leah (who would be Shmuel's wife - and her father listed as David)

So under the "Spouse" field for Shmuel, we are listing Leah bat David, and
under the "Spouse" field for Leah, we are listing Shmuel ben Movsha.

Does anyone have:

a) objections?

b) a better idea?

c) comments or suggestions of any kind?

These field names evolved after months of heated discussion among the
coordinators, inputters, translators, and data people. While it's not
possible to please everyone all of the time, we're doing our best to get
things right, and please as many people as possible.

Come on Litvaks - Lets hear >from you!

Hi: Please go to www.expediamaps.com and when you do you will see a spot
where it says "places to find". Click on that, and it when it comes up type
in Vassaria, Poland. Then click "go", and voilla, you have Warsaw, Poland. I
believe there is a portion in the lefthand column which gives you three
separate spellings of Warsaw. It might be possible that that is the phonetic
pronounciation or spelling. The map is great, and so is the site for many of
those who wish to know where the cities in Poland are. And for that matter
anywhere in the world. You can also enlarge or minimize the map. Also you
can e-mail or print same. If you have any luck would you be so kind as to
inform me. Good luck. Herman Stein

Wondering if anyone in this SIG knows if there are any records still
existant for this town. My grandfather, Samuel Kopstein, was born there
in about 1895. His father (Joseph Noah Kopstein) died when he was quite
young and he and his 3 brothers and their mother came to Canada. Seeking
info on Joseph Noah who is likely buried there, in order to link our

Jordan,
They are NOT , according to the press release which appeared in the H-SIG

this on the news. It sounds like, G-d willing, we will be around to see this

Looking for any information about a slave labor ammunition factory in or
just outside of the Czestochow ghetto, called Hassok Palcary (the spelling
is most likely incorrect, but it sounds like the previous spelling) My
family and myself were forced laborers during the period l942-44. I was
only a child of 9 or l0 and cannot remember much, except the long hours of
work, no food, no drink, sleeping in and around the work place, under the
nazi gun, where I remained with serious physical disabilities to this day!
My search is for any one that was there that knows who the factory
principals were, so that I may begin a claim for the hardship I have
endured. My name is David Green and I live in Toronto, Canada. My e.mail
is Leedave@sprint.ca
Kindly respond with any info. that you may have! Thanks!
