Wondering if anyone in this SIG knows if there are any records still
existant for this town. My grandfather, Samuel Kopstein, was born there
in about 1895. His father (Joseph Noah Kopstein) died when he was quite
young and he and his 3 brothers and their mother came to Canada. Seeking
info on Joseph Noah who is likely buried there, in order to link our
family to another of the same name. Thanks for your help Deborah

Jordan,
They are NOT , according to the press release which appeared in the H-SIG
Digest, scanning records--they are TRANSCRIBING THE NAMES. I also heard
this on the news. It sounds like, G-d willing, we will be around to see this
project done.

The names and addresses of Undertakers in the Blue Hills section would
be appreciated--they might have information I'm seeking. Many thanks

You probably mean the Blue Hill Avenue area of Boston's Dorchester
section. This was a major center of Jewish life in Boston for the first
50+ years of the twentieth century. Salem Street is located in Boston's
North End and would be reached by streetcar/subway >from Dorchester.

The Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts (JCAM) , 1320 Centre
St., Newton Centre MA, 02159 may be the place for you to start.

czestochowa,poland - slave labor factory #general

lee green <leedave@...>

Looking for any information about a slave labor ammunition factory in or
just outside of the Czestochow ghetto, called Hassok Palcary (the spelling
is most likely incorrect, but it sounds like the previous spelling) My
family and myself were forced laborers during the period l942-44. I was
only a child of 9 or l0 and cannot remember much, except the long hours of
work, no food, no drink, sleeping in and around the work place, under the
nazi gun, where I remained with serious physical disabilities to this day!
My search is for any one that was there that knows who the factory
principals were, so that I may begin a claim for the hardship I have
endured. My name is David Green and I live in Toronto, Canada. My e.mail
is Leedave@sprint.ca
Kindly respond with any info. that you may have! Thanks!

On October 30, 1998 (message no. 13) Mark Schwartz asked about Buzau,
Rumania.

The town of Buzau is about 60 miles northeast of Bucharest and located
on the river of the same name. It is a rail center, and (as of 1969) had a
"brisk trade" in many industrial products, >from lumber and petroleum to
knitwear and wine. In 1948, it had a population of 43, 365.

Trip Report on Slovakia & Poland #general

Rita Permut

We flew to Krakow in mid-July this past summer where we were met at the
airport by our Polish driver/guide. In addition to Auschwitz, we visited
the shtetls of Rymanow, Sanok, Zagorz, Dukla, Jasliska and Frystig in
Poland. In Slovakia we were in Presov, Bardejov and Ladomirova.

I have written an 8-1/2 page report on this trip. I went with my
daughter, Cathy Permut, and her companion, David Eberhardt. We were in
France for two weeks before we did the shtetl part of our trip. If
anyone is interested I can send the report via e-mail as an attachment.
I cannot send to anyone on JUNO as it will not accept attachments.

E-mail me privately if you are interested.

from my "Trip Report" to Poland and Slovakia summer of 1998.
This is an extract >from my report that I promised Mr. Landa of Presov,
Slovakia, I would post on Jewishgen:

"To my recollection I indicated that I would mention the need for
monetary assistance for the Presov cemeteries on Jewishgen. ATTENTION
JEWISHGENNERS and JEWISH GENEALOGISTS with an interest in the town of
Presov, Slovakia, and its cemeteries.

"Is there someone out there willing to organize a plea for monetary
assistance for the Presov cemeteries? If so, please contact me, and I
will put you in touch with Mr. Landa. There is a Jewish community of
about 108 still in Presov. This was the only Jewish community we found
on our trip although there is a small one in Krakow."

Military Medal Citations #general

Richard Howells <richard.tawnies@...>

Dear Jewishgenners

I came late to this thread having missed a few posts. As I understand it,
the notification of the award of a Military Medal is contained within the
London Gazette, but for the First World War contains only number, rank,
initials, surname, regiment and home town. Miltary Medal citations are
notoriously difficult to come by - there were so many awarded that very few
were recorded in the London Gazette. The best place to look is in the
battalion War Diary held at the Public Record Office at Kew, London. The
action for which a medal was won is usually described within the diary
although rarely the citation. The second place to look is in the
regimental museum - these often have more detail on a particular battle.
In my own grandfather's case I was fortunate to find that the regimental
archivist was compiling a book of all bravery awards for the regiment - and
my grandfather's citation was contained within the manuscript!

Good luck

November meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Bergen County #general

Edward Rosenbaum <erosenbaum@...>

The next meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Bergen County will be
on Sunday, November 8, 1998 at 2pm. People can come as early 1:00pm to
shmooze and informally discuss successes, problems and solutions. The
topic for November will be "Passenger Arrival Records: Why They Are Valuable
to Genealogical Research." Feel free to bring any passenger arrival
records that you may already have. We will also approve our bylaws and
officers.

The meeting will be at the Avotaynu's offices in Bergenfield. Due to
limited seating at the Avotaynu office, please bring your own chair.

Directions to Avotaynu:
155 N. Washington Ave, Bergenfield, New Jersey
Phone: 201-387-7200 (1-800-286-8296 if you are >from a pay phone)
Parking: On-site parking. Park anywhere in the parking lot.

from New Jersey:
Get to NJ Route 4. Take the Teaneck Road exit toward Bergenfield (north on
Teaneck Road). After passing the Teaneck Armory on right, you enter
Bergenfield and the street name changes to Washington Avenue. Go through
town to 155 N. Washington Avenue (across the street >from a Wendy's).
Warning: There is a 155 SOUTH Washington Avenue which you will pass before
passing through the heart of the business district.

from Rockland County, New York:
Take the Palisade Interstate Parkway southbound to Exit 5S (Route 303,
Tappan). Continue on Route 303 southbound. When you enter New Jersey it
becomes Livingston Avenue. Continue some distance, about 7.5 miles, (the
name changes to Knickerbocker Road after passing the Oradell Reservoir) past
the Cresskill monument traffic circle. The first blinker after the circle
is Hickory Avenue. Right on Hickory to the end which is North Washington
Avenue in Bergenfield. Almost immediately after making a right the office
building is on the right.
