Alert on the Lithuanian Commision Investigating the Period 1940-1941

To all who had lost Lithuanian relatives in the Holocaust:

Below is a letter >from the head of the Association of Lithuanian Jews in
Israel to the President of Lithuania objecting to a newly formed
Commission by the Lithuanian Government to investigate crimes of the Nazis
and the Soviets during World War II (see decree below). The problem is
that this commission intentionally blurs the responsibility of the ethnic
Lithuanian population in the murder of 90 percent of the Jewish population.
I urge you to read the letter and the decree that establishes the
commission. We'd be wise to contact those (including some Jews) on the
commission to reconsider their
participation given the current structure.

Dear President Adamkus

On behalf of the Association of Lithuanian Jews, the representative
organization of Jews of Lithuanian origin all over the world, we urge you
to change or cancel the historical commission you recently established to
investigate the Nazi and Soviet occupations of your country.

The linking of the histories of the Nazi and Soviet occupations is the
heart of the problem. More than any other factor, this false symmetry has
been a major obstacle to any serious soul-searching by Lithuanian society
in regard to the extensive collaboration of Lithuanians with the Nazis in
the murder of Lithuanian Jewry. Even worse, false accusations and patent
exaggerations regarding Jewish participation in Communist crimes against
Lithuanians have been adduced time and again to explain, and in some cases
even justify, the participation of Lithuanians in the murder of Jews during
the Holocaust.

The combination of these two tragedies will not only fail to clarify the
historical record, but will aggravate the existent tensions between
Lithuanians and Jews. Unless these two tragedies are fully and completely
separated, this project will not contribute towards a healing of the wounds
and improve the relations between our peoples.

We therefore urge you to reconsider its mandate and either establish two
separate commissions or cancel the entire project.

Respectfully

19th Annual conference on Jewish Genealogy in NY #lithuania

DNHIowa@...

Dear SIG:

We have received the following letter >from the organizers of the New York
seminar:

"Several Special Interest Groups have expressed an interest in having an
archivist >from abroad speak at the 19th Annual Conference on Jewish Genealogy
in New York. In order not to be forced to choose between the different SIG
requests, we will be willing to have an archivist invited >from each geographic
region so long as the following conditions are met.

* The SIG invites the archivist and coordinates all arrangements for the
visitor during their stay.

* The speaker must be proficient in English

* The NY conference will share jointly with the SIG in the costs.

These costs include:

-Airfare >from Europe to NY
-Per Diem of $50/day (6 days)
-Hotel accommodations for 5 nights including one Saturday
at either end of the conference.

A suggested way for the SIG to raise funds is to have the archivist charge
for private consultations with conference participants. The Conference will
provide a room for the consultations and the SIG will arrange all consultation
times.

Please contact me if your SIG intends to go ahead and invite an Archivist from
your group's special interest country to speak at the conference."

Having Vitalija Gircyte appear as a keynote speaker on behalf of LitvakSIG was
a real accomplishment for our SIG. We not only met the conditions in the
letter above, we showcased what we were doing, and attracted many new members
to the SIG.

Watch for the full transcript of Vitalija's seminar talk, along with maps,
graphics, and the catalog of the holdings of the Kaunas Regional Archives,
which our new Webmaster, Trevor Tucker, will soon place on our revised
website.

If you have comments or suggestions, either pro or con, for a speaker for the
New York seminar, please let us know. We are planning to discuss this during
our online board meeting in December.

Dear Stuart,

I saw your letter to the Belarus SIG and noticed your last name: CHEYETTE.

My distant cousin is Shlomit Sambursky Cheyettee. I know very little about
her, but would love to get in touch. She was born in Israel, was married
at one time to Fred Cheyette. They have two children, Dran and Tammy. She
is said to live in Massachusetts. I have not tried to search for her, but
it is on my *to do* list. Perhaps you know of her?

Any information would be appreciated.

Budapest city directories in Hungarian libraries #hungary

Radix <tristram@...>

Hello hsiggers,

Regarding the recent thread about Budapest city directories, I
understand that Diane G. would like to find this series somewhere in the
US, and that Eleanor B. has contacted the Hungarian National Library in
Budapest and waiting for the results.

If my memory serves me well, this series is placed in the Historical
Reading Room of the National Library, and there might be a complete
series. Also, afaik the Budapest Municipial Library (Fovarosi Szabo
Ervin Konyvtar) at http://www.fszek.hu (choose English, then the
Budapest Collection) has a complete series.

Besides these, our library here in Pecs has a couple of volumes (1880,
1883, 1891, 1902, 1913, 1916, 1922). I am willing to do free lookups,
provided you have a request covering 1-2 surnames. Please note that
common surnames might got listed on 3-4 pages. I can make digital
photos/scans, then put them on the web for your convenience. Should
there be 8-10 requests, please allow some time to prepare the material.

Regards,

Janos Bogardi / Radix at http://www.bogardi.com/gen

Firstly, thanks again to all who have privately replied to my query
regarding Velvel. So many replies!

Since a few people have asked me the same question, wishing to know what

Velvel is a diminuitive of the Yiddish Wolf. Wolf in Hebrew is Ze'ev. Two
very common English equivalents are Warren and William.

I'm sure this is correct: many people have told me.

Ken,

I finally found and read some of Gary Mokotoff's "Where Once We Walked"
and in the front section, pages xxvi - xxviii, were 3 maps of Central &
Eastern Europe. They showed the countries and their outlines and major

Ken,

I finally found and read some of Gary Mokotoff's "Where Once We Walked"
and in the front section, pages xxvi - xxviii, were 3 maps of Central &
Eastern Europe. They showed the countries and their outlines and major
cities "Before World War I", "Between the Wars", and "Today" (as of
publication), respectively. Perhaps that will do?

Trying to work out where various ancestors were living in "Poland" over

political maps, valid as a particular date, which you could superimpose
on unchanging geographical maps, maybe in a loose-leaf format. Does this
already exist?<<
