Re: Searching KATZEFF, Glasgow, Scotland #general

Brian Stern <BrianS@...>

My ggf, Samuel Joselowitz Katzeff, had a brother who moved to Glasgow
Scotland around 1900. I'm not sure about his name, but it could be Schile
David Joselowitz Katzeff.
I'm interested in this first name Schile. I have come across it recently
in a group of people that may be my relatives: Schile Bloch from
Eichtersheim Germany and his grandson Shile Bloch >from Eichtersheim Germany
:).

Can anyone tell me anything about this first name? Was it common at one
time? Is this a "Jewish" name? Does it mean something?

Thanks,

Brian Stern }:-{)}

Death of Sheiala Moskow #general

Pollero - Rochelle K. <rpollero@...>

Sheiala Ratner Moskow (1929-1998)

The members of Gesher Galicia's Steering Committee are deeply saddened by
the death of our friend and Treasurer, Sheiala Moskow who died on November
12, 1998 in Annapolis, Maryland after a short illness.

Sheiala had many friends and contacts in the worldwide Jewish genealogy
community as she researched her GELERNTER and RATNER family. She
subscribed to this discussion group and regularly responded to its
readers, mostly by private email.

A longtime member of the JGS of Greater Washington, Sheiala attended many
Summer Seminars, including NYC, Israel, Paris, and most recently in L.A.

Sheiala made a major contribution to Gesher Galicia not only in her three
years as treasurer, but with her wise and helpful advice. She will be
missed.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 15 at
the Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Avenue, Annapolis, Maryland. The
family will sit shiva on Sunday and Monday at the Moskow home.

In Belorussian language Ahova (to check on modern maps) @15m NW >from Pinsk.
There weren't local independant Jewish community at the turn of the century,
at least in statistical and taxation documents about Jewish comunities.
Possible records I think included in Pinsk records.

Okhovo is located 15 km (19.5km by road) northwest of Pinsk in
the Pinsk District. It was, and continues to be, a small

Shtetl Names #belarus

A. S. Cohen <ascohen@...>

I have been trying to locate the shtetl named Shtapes. This is the
yiddish name that has been used in our family but I can't find it on any
maps. It is supposed to be near Kletsk. I have used the Shtetlfinder and
the names Stolpsy or Stolbcy come up. This town is near Kletsk. Does
anyone know if Stolbcy is the Belarussian name for Shtapes?

New Website #general

Joy Kovalycsik <Rusyn.From.Ujak.Joy@...>

We have just put up a new webpage that is for those whose ancestors came
from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire regions and are of the heritages
that resided in those areas. Anyone is welcomed to send in any essays or
family histories/queries that they may wish. We are trying to give an
overview of all who lived in these areas and wish to give all heritages
equal billing but we need input to make this work. Anything offered would
be greatly appreciated.

Ellis Island l #general

Hanna K. Grossman <hannakg@...>

A relative recently went to Ellis Island and reported that our family
name was posted in their list of immigrants. Since neither she nor I
nor any relative know to us had arranged for this we are intrigued by
the suggestion that we have some unknown reltives. Is it possible to
find out >from Ellis I. who submitted the name? Do you know to whom to
write?

On August 31, Jennifer Dropkin reported in the JewishGen Discussion Group
that she was able to request that messages be sent to the people who had
posted the names she was interested in, and that she was successful in
contacting two new relatives in this way.
