R.I. Mateles <rmateles@...>
I would speculate that they are Polish/Yiddish versions of two Hebrew names:
(1) Malkha =Queen (2) Rahel=Rachel The "ele" ending is a diminutive in Yiddish. Rich Mateles

They are similar to Mildred and Rose and to Maryann and Roberta, and to Mostanyname and Readpreviouspostings. PLEASE, again, names usually CANNOT BE " TRANSLATED". People may chose new names in the country of residence, or adapt old names, but they are not "equivalent" except for the person who bears them. ==Malkiele MAY be a diminuitive of the Yiddish kinnuy of one called in Hebrew: Malka (Queen.). The other name may be a misspelling for the Yiddish Roiseleh ("little rose"). Jewish women in Europe generally got by with a kinnuy and were frequently not given a specific Hebrew name. Rose is popularly believed to be a transdation of the Hebrew Shoshanna. That is incorrect: Shoshanna is a lily. Vered is a rose is a rose is a rose. Michael Bernet
