The "Hochschule fuer Juedische Studien Heidelberg" (Staatlich
anerkannte Hochschule in der Traegerschaft des Zentralrates der
Juden in Deutschland) does exist in Friedrichstrasse 9, D-69117
Heidelberg, phone *49 62 21 /2 25 76 since the winter term
1979/80 and will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 1999. Its web
address is <http://129.206.242.30/>
and it provides its history also in English. I hope it will help
to trace the informatiion required.

Re: Help "translate" first names: Malkiele, Rojrele #general

R.I. Mateles <rmateles@...>

I would speculate that they are Polish/Yiddish versions of two Hebrew names:

(1) Malkha =Queen
(2) Rahel=Rachel

The "ele" ending is a diminutive in Yiddish.

People may chose new names in the country of residence, or adapt old names,
but they are not "equivalent" except for the person who bears them.

==Malkiele MAY be a diminuitive of the Yiddish kinnuy of one
called in Hebrew: Malka (Queen.). The other name may be a
misspelling for the Yiddish Roiseleh ("little rose"). Jewish
women in Europe generally got by with a kinnuy and were frequently
not given a specific Hebrew name. Rose is popularly believed to
be a transdation of the Hebrew Shoshanna. That is incorrect:
Shoshanna is a lily. Vered is a rose is a rose is a rose.
