SSDI records/answers to requests #general

Lumenasan@...

I've been following this thread with some concern. So, when I recently
sent off a request letter for Social Security records, I enclosed a stamped
postcard addressed to myself. On the back were a couple of lines for the
recipient to check off.

Request received and in process______
Request received this date______________
Any idea how long this will take?_________

Thank you for filling out and returning this card.

I got the postcard back within two weeks. And although I have not yet
received the records, it is comforting to be sure the request is in process.
I think that if one wants to be sure the request has been received, it
behooves us to make sure it is as easy as possible for the government worker
to let us know.

I always enclosed an SASE if I want an answer to a request, no matter who I
am asking.

Jewish Cemetery Ass'n of MA #general

Bert Lazerow <lazer@...>

You asked about finding your ancestor's grave in Boston MA.
The easiest way is to contact the Jewish Cemetery Ass'n of MA. I have
always called them, rather than written, and they look it up while I wait
and provide the information, so I do not know how well they respond to
letters. My impression is that they have been quite friendly and helpful.
Whether they could find her without a surname is more doubtful. Perhaps
they have an index that would include maiden names.
Warning, however. The Ass'n does not include all the Jewish cemeteries in
the Boston area, and they will not have information for non-member
cemeteries. So the fact that they may have no information does not mean
that your relatives were not buried in the Boston area. If you had a
surname, the official records are open for public inspection.

Tapelau, Lithuania? #general

Adam Katzeff <adam.katzeff@...>

I'm searching for the birthplace of my great, great, grandfather. According
to some material found in Swedish archives he was born in "Tapelau,
Russia". Tapelau is probably a germanised variant of the local name.
According to family stories he was >from somewhere around Vilna. When
searching at the shtetl seeker I have found two places which are rather
likely to be the place I'm looking for: Tabaliai (115,4 miles WNW from
Vilna) and Tubeliai (86 miles WNW >from Vilna).

Does anyone knows if some of these to places could be Tapelau or if it is a
completely another place somewhere.

Budapest Directories #general

Looking for Budapest City Directories >from the late 1800s or early 1900s.
I have checked the Discussion Group Archives and the Hungarian SIG Lists
Archives and found nothing about this subject. I have tried the Library of
Congress and local libraries and have come up empty. Surely this major
capital city had directories. If anyone knows how to locate these, please
email me privately. Thank you.

Ronn,

Dear Belarus SIG researchers--

I'm looking for any Lipkin data >from Vitebsk you may have come across.
My grandfather, David Lipkin, came to Philadelphia >from Vitebsk with his
wife Anna around the turn of the century. I believe David had a sister
Bertha. They settled in Philadelphia and had two children, Isadore (my
late dad) and Freda. Isadore was born in 1913 and moved to Penns Grove
new Jersey in the early 40's to practice medicine. Unfortunately he
passed away in 1972 before my interest in our family tree began.

I appreciate any help you could provide in solving the mysteries of my
family origins. I'm hoping you have data going all the way back to the
primordial Cro-Magnon Lipkins who probably invented fire or the wheel or
something else really useful. If not....I'd be glad to hear anything
else you've uncovered.

many thanks,

I recently received a letter >from that place with information on my cousin.

Re: Baross school #hungary

Peter S. Spiro <peter.spiro@...>

This school is located in the city of Gyor. It appears to be a
vocational high school >from the quick glance I took at its website. A
tip: you can usually find out more about something by progressively
eliminating the last term in a URL. That takes you up to the home
page.
The fact that this kind of material is getting on the web is a very
hopeful sign for genealogists. Here is one school that has put its
hundred year history up. There may be many more in the future, letting
you find out if your ancestor graduated with distinction or just a bare
pass!
