Searching: BROUDE in Philadelphia
#general
Paul Fisher <fisherpaul@...>
I need some help locating the family of Louis BROUDE, my greatuncle, who
is supposed to have lived in Philadelphia. He died ca 1925. He was born in Kelme, Lithuania ca 1869. I have searched 1900, 1910 and 1920 census to no avail. He had a son Morris. I don't know his wife's name. I can only find a Louis BRAUDE. I know of no connection between BRAUDE and BROUDE. I have checked Philadelphia City Directories >from 1890-1921 and found a Louis BROUDE some years. This is confusing to me. There were other BROUDE's listed too but they came and went. My BROUDE's all lived in Minneapolis. Jacob born 1863 (my grandfather) married Ethel KAPLAN in 1887 in Minneapolis. Other siblings were Hannah born ca 1855 who married Eital ENGAL in Kelme, Lithuania. Isaac married Etta KAPLAN in 1888 in Minnesota, Czarna born ca 1870 married Moses KAPLAN in Minneapolis and Henry Israel born 1885 and died (Single?) in 1925. Thanks in advance. SHAI (and other spellings)
#general
IsraelP <p2o5rock@...>
Shemuel yosef Agnon was called Shai for his first initials and I once
knew a fellow who went by Shai for his first and last initials. Israel Pickholtz (I didn't think this was important enough to post, by Judith Romney Wegner made me do it.)

Austrian Military Records-War Archives
#general
Lebn@...
I recently posted a message which explained how one accesses
the FHL catalog to locate Austrian Military Records and I specifically discussed the GRUNDBUCHBLATTER (basic service sheets) for the period 1790-1864 which contains an alphabetical list by surname of military personnel in the Austrian army. I have been swamped with requests about other time periods dealing with the Austrian army. The Austrian State Archives -War Archives is on the internet. Here is the URL: http://www.qrz.com/gene/reg/AUT/krainf-e.htm It includes the Archives address and please read the section on Hints for Users. They may do a complimentary search if not too time consuming. This site includes the ENTIRE Archival holdings, the most important for genealogists would be the 1st Group, Personnel Records. Now that you have been directed to a great site, please, no more private inquiries, it is all there for you. Good luck Eleanor Bien

Gargzdai (Gorzd)
#general
mikki meyer <mmeyer@...>
There used to be a Gorzder Society composed of those who lived once in
Gorzd (Gargzdai), Lithuania. They published "The Gorzd Book" in Israel, which I note the Litvak Sig now has. Does this group exist anywhere in any form? Last I heard, they met in Israel, but that was more than two decades back. Frank Meyer

Searching: LEVKOVITZ, Plonsk and USA (ca 1914)
#general
niralon@...
Hello all,
I would appreciate any pointers that may advance my research on the following: My second Great Grandfather, Avraham Eliyahu LEVKOVITZ and his youngest son, Meir Nachman LEVKOVITZ, left Plonsk Poland for the USA in 1914. They worked there for 10 years in a sewing/tailor/textile factory until returning to Plonsk in 1924. Apparently they were able to save a good deal of money in the US and returned to Poland with 20 sewing machines to establish their own factory in Plonsk. I am hoping someone may be able to provide pointers to resources that may document their arrival/residence/departure >from the USA. Nir Alon Israel MODERATOR NOTE: The best way to go >from here is to the resources found in JewishGen. There is a wealth of information to help you further your research. You can get a list of all the resources available by accessing our home page at http://www.jewishgen.org.

Re: JRI-Poland Database for Tarnow

In a message dated Sat, 29 Aug 1998 "Eric Adler" writes:
Kudos to the people who worked on the JRI-Poland database for Tarnow Eric AdlerEric, thanks for the opening to tell Jewishgenners about an aspect of Jewish Records Indexing - Poland which is probably not well known. It's called the "JRI-Poland Courier Team" <grin> It's another illustration of the remarkable teamwork that underlies everything that happens in the JRI-Poland initiative and, for that matter, JewishGen and the Jewish genealogical world. Here's how the last group of Tarnow records found their way into the JRI-Poland database. Volunteers at the Douglas E. Goldman Jewish Genealogy Center in Beth Hatefutsoth extracted the records >from the LDS films. Photo- copies of these hand written extracts were picked up by JRI-Poland volunteer Shmuel Kehati He gave the large package to a friend who took them to Toronto and delivered them to Shmuel's wife (on vacation in Toronto). Stan Zeidenberg (head of the JRI-Poland Copy Service in Toronto) picked up the package and sent it to a JRI-Poland board member via low cost inter-Canadian mail. The board member took them to a town in Massachusetts (where his daughter lives) and the following day, delivered them to Tarnow Shtetl CO-OP leader, Howard Fink in Acton, Mass. All this to save $100 in air mail postage because every penny counts in a huge volunteer-driven project like this. And, in case you are wondering... this was not unusual. JRI-Poland has been moving copies of pages of extracts >from the Goldman Center to our Shtetl CO-OPs in this fashion for a long time... although these Tarnow pages probably moved through the most hands ever. So, there is no real JRI-Poland Courier Team... It may seem like it but it's just a number of dedicated individuals who do their part from time to time.Stanley Diamond Coordinator, Jewish Records Indexing - Poland
