Protestant-Jewish marriage #general

Dr. Elizabeth B. Holmes <bede@...>

Mary Jane Wellburn,b July 1888 in Sunderland Co. Durham England is
known to have married a Jew. Although there are several descendants of
her sibs still alive NO ONE has any idea what happened to her or her
married name. None of us have come up with any trace of her. It is
possible that she had 3 children,Dennis, Raie, Alan. Her parents were
Robert and Margaret[nee Laverick] Wellburn. Her father was a
Hairdresser. Any one able to help please? Betty Holmes, descended from
the oldest sister.

Greek Translation #general

Harry E Stein <fromme@...>

I need help in translating Greek to English. I have received >from the
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 36 forms written in alternating
lines of Greek and German. The forms appear to be arrest and/or property
confiscation records of Jewish Citizens taken in Salonika and sent to
Auschwitz. The majority of the names on the list are of my wife's
family, Abravanel and Eskenazi. The task is not as formidable as it
appears as all the forms appear to be identical. Translate one form and
all the forms have been translated. The only difference between the
forms are the different names, addresses, and property lists (which many
times contain only one line) written on them in Greek script. It becomes
a matter of translating one form and 36 names and address and a very
short property list. I have tried the only local Greek Church to no
avail. In addition to using the forms for genealogical purposes, I
intend to provide the names to all those interested. All help would be
appreciated.

As I recall, it was the shooting death in Paris of a German diplomat (?) by a
student Herschel Grynszpan (sp?) that was turned into the "reason" for the
German pogrom on Krystallnacht, Nov 9, 1938. A look at French and German
records (and, of course, the news was world-wide at the time) may bring some
interesting connections.

Just as with older records, you should write to the Immigration and
Naturalization Service (425 I Street, NW, Washington, DC 20535). Because
of privacy rights, you cannot access the records unless you can show that
the person is dead, or that they have given you permission to do so.

was about translation of <OLD RUSSIAN> term into <MODERN ENGLISH>. For this

purpose, the modern meaning of the old Russian term is meaningless!

Here again, I shall point to the hazards of <translation>...>>

Ah...But the point of my comment completely escapes Dr. Zeldes.

Perhaps he or any other Russian scholar can tell us how and why the Russian
word "skazka" changed its meaning in the 279 years to have taken on the modern
meaning of "fairy tale". Knowing the process of transformation of a word is
far >from being "meaningless". I suspect that dismissing this as a "hazard of
translation" may result in discarding valuable insights on the society of our
ancestors and its record-keeping processes.

I challenge Dr. Zeldes to use his native knowledge of the Russian language,
his access to academic references (maybe some older Russian/Russian
dictionaries) and a little imagination to shed some light on the
transformation of the word "skazka", and to share the resulting knowledge with
us researchers.

And again, I recommend that interested persons read AJGS Minigraph #101 "Dead
Souls of Satanov" (see your local JGS librarian for a copy you may borrow) to
better understand my original comments. I am not so naive to believe that
errors and deceptions do not occur in all surveys and censuses. Language
changes to reflect a society, and when a language may change to reflect the
aspect of fabrication in a census I find that a fascinating study that could
be instructive to genealogical researchers.

As far as I am aware, Jewish Halacha forbids such practice. I thus
assume that it was only practiced under extraordinary circumstances.
