Dear Steve,
I suggest you contact or visit the Westchester County Archives
in Elmford, just next to Tarrytown. They have a very complete
and accessible archive of all the information that you seek. Also,
Westchester County death records are easily searchable.
<http://www.co.westchester.ny.us> is the website for Westchester

Re: World's Fair #general

Herman Lewis <hllewis@...>

There is a very interesting book about the 1939-40 New York World's
Fair. It is entitled "1939 The Lost World of the Fair" by David
Gelernter. It is more than just a book about the Fair. It discusses life
in 1939 vs life today, especially among Jews.

Aunt Florie (WOLF) went to Izbica #general

Candice Bradley and Daniel Byrne <djbyrne@...>

Dear JewishGenners --

I had written previously about the WOLF family in Vienna, my
grandfather's Austrian military records, and trying to find out about
two relatives who we thought had gone to Theresienstadt.

Through the efforts of Alisah Schiller at Beit Theresienstadt, we have
learned that my great grandmother, Clara Katharina FUCHS WOLF, died in
June 1942 in an old age home in Vienna and is buried in the same
cemetary as other family members. This was wonderful news. However,
her daughter, Flore WOLF HERTZKA, was not so lucky. She was deported
on April 9, 1942 to Izbica.

It didn't take me long to figure out Izbica. Amid the websites for
hotels, cave tours and spelunkian vacation sites in present-day central
Europe are pages listing dates of trains leaving Vienna and other
locales for Izbica and Izbica for Sobibor, and the numbers of persons
aboard. My mother's favorite Auntie had gone to Izbica. It seems
that during that time period, April 1942, all the Jews in Izbica were
sent as part of the "Final Solution" either to Sobibor or Belzec (during
April mostly Sobibor). At Sobibor and Belzec there were only gas
chambers.

I called my mother and told her. She said, "Poor Florie. Poor Florie.
But perhaps she didn't suffer long." (We are already working on a
memorial.)

Izbica (or Isbica) is not one of those much-discussed camps, and I am
not sure how to proceed now on finding out more about Aunt Florie's
fate. I have searched the JewishGen archives and found little to
nothing about this camp. I would be interested in hearing >from others
who researched information on ancestors deported to Izbica.

Thanks much,

Candice Bradley

Lomza Yizkor Book Addendum Index #general

David Gershon Leventhal <David_Gershon@...>

Hello all,

In my quest for a cleaner computer, I have come across a
number of documents that could be useful to many of you.
This one is the Lomza Yizkor Book Addendum Index, a large
document which seems to be an index of Lomza residents,
listing a very brief description of each person, and their
corresponding page number.

If any are interested please let me know. This list doesn't
belong to me, but I think it a valuable addition to the
Yizkor Book SIG. I would appreciate that SIG's moderator or
ListOwner to contact me about this index.

Thanks,

Mass. Jewish Servicemen Killed in WWII #general

DAVID ROSEN <72426.1553@...>

While indexing obituaries in the Boston Jewish Advocate,
I came across a listing of Massachusetts Jewish Servicemen
who were killed in WWII. Dated May 8, 1945, it is a partial
list compiled >from Advocate files and >from data gathered by
the Mass. Bureau of War Records, Army and Navy Committee
of the National Jewish Welfare Board.

This has to be a small percentage of the full accounting --
A lot of cities with significant Jewish populations are
absent entirely. e.g. Brockton, Haverhill. My own neighbor
from Malden is not listed. The list contains 191 names.
Thanks to Warren Blatt for posting the list at:

Registration. Does anybody know if records exist, and if
they are online? Or do I have to write to NARA? Any ideas?

Tombstone inscription of Dov Berl #general

Judith Romney Wegner

Paul FisherAsked

Can someone help me regarding the names on my grandfather's tombstone?
The letters are aleph--beit--yud--nun--vav, hey--yud--kuf--rash,
daled--vov, vav--rash--hieroglyph.
His Yiddish name was Berl Grabina. I believe daled--vov = Dov, Hebrew
for Berl.
What names do these letters spell in Hebrew and what would be their
Yiddish equivalents?
First: aleph--beit--yud--nun--vav, hey--yud--kuf--rash,

This line is quite straightforward, it spells the Hebrew words "avinu
ha-yaqar" meaning "our dear father"

daled--vov, vav--rash--hieroglyph.

I can't figure this out as it stands (unless it's some kind of
abbreviation) But, are you quite sure you meant vov here and not vet?
(Just as, above, you said "daled--vov = Dov" -- when in fact the name
Dov is spelled Dalet Vet) If those vavs really are vets -- and if the
Hieroglyph is really a lamed -- this looks like a spelling of the name"
Dov Berl" (though I think the rules of correct yiddish spelling would
strictkly speaking require an `ayin to represent the "e" sound between the
bet and the resh).
