"Memories of My Shetl" # 11 98/08/14 #general

NFatouros@...

Dear People,

Elsa Drezner asked about a book printed in Paris in 1978, which she
thought was called "Memories of My Shtetl," concerning Dzikow-Tarnobrzeg.
After calling my local bookstores, I did an online search at various used
bookstores, especially those specializing in Judaica for such a book, but
turned up only a book of memories of a life in Lithuanian shtetl.

However, in Appendix ll of ">from a Ruined Garden," (1998 Edition), YIVO
librarian Zachary Baker lists a Yizkor book, written in Hebrew and Yiddish
called "Kehilat Tarnobrzeg-Dzikow (Galicia ha-ma-aravit) [The Community of
Tarnbrez-Dzikow (Western Galicia)]. Ed Yaakov Yehoshua Fleishder. Tel Aviv:
Tarnobrzeg-Dzikow Society, 1973, 379 pp., illus.

Also, checking through the listings in that extraordinary and beautifully
organized Family Finder resource published by the Gesher Galicia Society, I
saw that many members of that Society are interested in Tarnbrzeg and two are
listed as interested in Dzikow. (I don't know whether they are two separate
shtetls, close together, or just one shtetl. If I get permission >from the
Society to copy the names and email and regular addresses I will send them to
Ms. Drezner. Ms. Drezner might want to write to them to learn what research
they have done. Otherwise, she herself should write to the Chairperson,
Shelley Pollero, at:

Benatar of Rhodes #general

Michel & Renee <mst@...>

Hi everyone,

I've hit upon an interesting problem and I'm hoping for some suggestions
on where to go >from here, short of going to Rhodes that is!!

It has always been family knowledge that my grandfather's parents and
sister all died after being deported >from Rhodes to Aushwitz. However,
during the course of my research several people have told me that only
Regina was deported and died in Aushwitz.

The Rhodes Jewish Museum internet site has a downloadable excel file
with all of the names of the people in buried in the cemetary there and
the names I expected to find were missing.

So, if they weren't deported and they aren't in the cemetary, where are
they? I wrote to the museum but they weren't very helpful in the past
and I am not expecting anything different now.

I would appreciate any suggestions!!

By the way, the names of the missing people are Bension and Diamante

Thanks,

Admitted? on Passenger List #general

Joel Weintraub <JWeintraub@...>

One of my relatives has stamped next to his name on the Ship
Passenger List "Admitted." Only a few people on the ship had
such a stamp. One had "Deported." Does this mean he was held
for further hearings? I didn't pay attention to his list, but I think at
the end of each ship's list there is an auxillary list of passengers
that were detained....under "Cause of Dtention" there is a list of "to
aunt...to uncle.... to husband" etc. What does that mean?

Thanks

Ink on old photos #general

JPLowens@...

Ink can bleed into the paper and smear onto other photos in a stack. I would
avoid it on important old photos. SOFT pencil woudl be best. Hard pencil
could make an impression interfering with the image.
I'd imagine that there are "non smear, non acid" pens on the market at high
prices for marking archival photos but, again, would go with soft lead pencil
as a cheaper alternative. I have photos I marked that way 35 years ago that
have not been harmed in that time. John Paul Lowens

Rottman Family Tree #general

Linda LaPorte <lindal@...>

Here is what I know:
Hi my name is Linda M. LaPorte. My good friend
Ilan Horak and I are
searching for any relatives of his father Rudolf Rottman. Rudolf
believes all of his family perished in the "Camps". I believe that it
is possible that some of his 5 siblings may have survived. This brave
man escaped via haystacks and pig slews.,etc. and eventually moved to
Canada and raised a family. It is the wish of his son Ilan to put
together the missing pieces if at all possible. Can you help me?? Here
is a brief history of this wonderful man's past.

Alexander and Sarah Rottman lived in Potspadi in Slovakia outside of
Kezmarok. Alexander born in Svedlar...1869.......Sarah (maiden name
Hertz) born- 1885..children......Aladar born-1912, Ofkar born-1915,
Arpat born-1918, Gabriela born-1920, Elenora born-1922, Rudolf
born-1924.

Sarah Rottman (Hertz) has two brothers last name Hertz living in
Wilkeberry, Pennsylvania.

Rudolf changed his name to Horak in 1945.

If you can help me in this search please get ahold of me at the above

Seeking Abraham HOROWITZ #general

David W. Harris <dharris1@...>

Dear JewishGenners-

Using New York records I have been able to determine that my ancestors,
Moses and Malke HOROWITZ died in 1910 and 1913, respectively. Moses, son of
Shlomo HOROWITZ Halevi and Jecoveh BASS, was a Yiddish playwright, popular
in both Europe and New York. Malke was the daughter of Shwarie and Gerdie
LEVENSON. Her NY death certificate says that her son, Abraham HOROWITZ
arranged for the burial at Washington Cemetery. A daughter, Sophie
Horowitz died in New York City in 1907 at the age of 39.

Abraham was probably born between 1864 and 1876, most likely in Rumania
(Jassy or Bucharest) and then moving to New York. I am trying to locate
that branch of the family, if it still exists. Any leads would be
appreciated.

TIA

By getting the digest, you get all of the messages. However, if you
prefer the individual messages instead of the digest, go to jewishgen,
special interest groups, go all the way down to the bottom to where you
can subscribe, choose that option, and then I think that you can change
