I'll try my best. I assume the frequently incorrect yods that are probably
other letters is because only one corner is left legible, and that many other
letters have been incorrectly deciphered because of the condition of the
stone..

==Correct.

Menachem-Mendel is a popular combination: a Hebrew name (he comforts) with a
German/Yiddish name beginning with the same letter. Shne'or-Zalman is another
popular combination. While Shne'or-Shragai is also a popular combination,
Shne'or Zalman is almost certain to signify a Lubavitcher chasid, very
possibly a direct descendant of Shne'or-Zalman of Ladi, founder of the sect.
[I don't know what Shne'or means, nor Zalman. Shragai I'm told means candle
in Aramaic. The names are a total enigma for me. Anyone else can probably tell
you more than I can.] However, the late Reb Menachem Mendel Shnerson has been
referred to by many since his death as Hamelekh, the King (and the
Messiah--but that's a different story.)

I suggest you contact Lubavitch world headquarters at 788 Eastern Parkway,
Brooklyn NY 11213. (718) 774-4000. Tell them of the location of the tomb, and
of course the date of death and they may be able to place your ancestor in the
Lubavitch genealogy and provide you with a full history. Or contact the
nearest Chabad/Lubavitcher center, perhaps at your local college.

We should all discover such lofty yichus (family connection)

Yes Jews like all men were "drafted" into the Russian Army during the Tsar's
time. My great grandfather ran >from central Ukraine for that very reason in
1904. He waited six months after his youngest child wass born and ran like
the wind after that to get out before he disappeared into the Army.
Interestingly I know he came alone to the United States and just recently I
found his passenger list. I was very happy to see that he was not really
alone. He was -- of course -- one of many in steerage but as I read down the
list I see he came to a broker on the Lower East Side of New York. But the

Your tale is a rather common one. My ggm was there for 25 years and died
there in 1946. I live locally so I'm very aware of what the hospital was all
about. It no longer exists today as a separate entity.

There were 3 extremely large psychiatric hospitals on Long Island: Kings Park
State, Pilgrim State and Central Islip State. CI was the oldest and largest.
They have been greatly downsized and today exist as one. There is a medical
records building that houses the records of all the patients. It is likely
the person you are seeking has microfilmed records. If he died there, they
should be able to provide a copy of his death cert. If you run into a problem
with that, let me know and I can give you further leads.

If you write or call the information below, they should be able to locate the
records and tell you what they have. They can be quite cooperative or quite
evasive. Ask for a photocopy of his admission card and any genealogical
information found in the record. However, if you have specific information
you want, such as descendents, be specific in your letter. They will probably
ask for proof of relationship as they are extremely concerned about the
legality of the privacy issue. There is extreme sensitivity on their part.
The charge was (is?) $ 10 for a copy of the death cert.

If you learn that he was there in 1915 or 1925, there is a NYS census that
would have him listed. Often, in the 1925 census there is an address given
prior to admission. Central Islip State Hospital can also be found in the
federal census for 1900, 1910 and 1920. It is located in Suffolk County, NY.

I plan on building a database of all Jewish people who were in CI for all the
census years. This is a very large project and I haven't really started the
entering in my database. Hopefully, I will have a good chunk of it ready for
the Summer Seminar in NY. PLEASE do not ask me to do a look up as at this
point I would have to do the same search as you. As my database builds, I
will post a notice on JewishGen and do look ups at that point. The interest
in this posting is encouraging to get me moving on it!

MODERATOR'S NOTE: This seems like an appropriate time to end the thread
on psychiatric hospitals on Long Island.
