Help in Cincinatti #general

Daniel Wagner <Cpwagner@...>

I am looking for the obituary of my greatgrandfather which appeared in
1930 in a Yiddish periodical. I have never been able to find this
periodical (*) but I now know that there is a good chance that it
exists in microfilm form at the Hebrew Union College Library in
Cincinatti. I checked their internet site but there is no means of
searching their catalog on-line.

Could anyone in Cincinatti help me?
Please answer privately, thank you in advance.

Daniel
(*) I did actually find 3 isolated issues of this periodical for
October and November 1928 in the Archives of the Jewish Museum of
Belgium, with the kind help of its Director Daniel Dratwa.

Lost mail: 2 to 12th August. HELP! PLEASE! #general

Stanley Diamond

Dear Friends:

Well, it could have been worse... but it is bad enough.

My AOL Personal Filing Cabinet was corrupted today and my back-up
was ten days old. So, even with the AOL "retrieve old mail sent and
received feature"... many messages have been lost.

So, if you wrote me between August 2nd and 12th and I owe you a
reply, please re-send your message. Or, if you received a message
from me during that time, and it was important, please send me a copy.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: More names I'm researching #general

aggfaia

I have been trying to find the origin of my grandfather, Albert GOLIN, for
years. He died in Denver in 1929, not having told any of his children where in
"Russia" he came >from for fear the Czar's minions would come to the USA and
Shanghai him into the army! He had an older sister who remained in "Russia."
Her name was May or Mamie. His Parent names ( I found >from his marriage
certificate in the 1897 Brooklyn, NY, archives) were Leib (GOLIN) and Marie
ABOW. He had a younger brother who was adopted in "Russia" by an American
family named FRIEDMAN. The brother, I was told by my aunts, married a woman who
owned a hotel in Jacksonville, FL, . I have been unable to trace him.

GALUN and GALOON are two of the Soundex, related, names that have been returned
to me . . . thus far to no avail.

Do you recognize any of this?

Thanks.

Castle Garden/Ellis Island #general

David Gardner <dgard@...>

I have never been clear about when Ellis Island took over >from Castle
Garden as the major immigrant entry center. What years did Castle Garden
operate and was there any overlap between the 2. Are there separate
records for Castle Garden and Ellis Island or are they combined?

I remember as a kid my Grandfather telling us kids to be quiet because
it sounded like "Kessel Garden". I don't know if that was a generic
expression or expressed his personal experience. He came here from
Poland in the late 1880s-1892

Thanks,

David Gardner M.D. Ph.D.
