Moves between cities: City Directories

I recently stumbled across an unexpected way of determining moves of people >from one City and State to another. While scanning the Newark City Directories (published almost every year >from about 1880 to 1965) for family names of interest ONE YEAR AT A TIME, I came across LAST chronological references to several people where the entry said simply: "removed to XX, YY", where XX was a city and YY was a state. I wish you similar luck. Email me for further info. on the Newark City Directories. I would suggest contacting the appropriate public library, university, or historical society for other directories of interest to you. Dr. Howard M. Relles Schenectady, NY

I recently stumbled across an unexpected way of determining death dates. While scanning the Newark City Directories (published almost every year >from about 1880 to 1965) for family names of interest ONE YEAR AT A TIME, I came across FIRST chronological references to several women in the year following the LAST chronological reference to their husband and in which the listing said simple "Widow of (that husband)". Rosenbaum, Edward <ERosenbaum@...>
Every so often I check the JRI database for family names. In my last search, I was looking for the name BUDNE and found the 1883 marriage licence for my wifes great grand mother Haja to Joszk Offman. In the same search I found the Joszk's birth certicate and the birth certicate for his daughter (my wife's grand mother). Even more important was that I found the town name... Ostrow Maz! I began looking around in the info available for this town and discovered that Stanley Diamond was researching the same surname.
As quick as I could type I sent Stanley an email, asking if my names sounded familiar. Stanley quickly responded that he was researching the OFFMAN family, but that his cousin Judie Ostroff-Goldstein knew more about the family than he did. I emailed Judie and withing a few hours of emailing and telephoning, had a GEDCOM file on my PC with about 700 relatives I never knew about. Not only did I find whole branches of the OFFMAN family, but I was introduced to two wonderful people (Judie and Stanley), without whom this discovery would not have been possible.

I'm not sure that this will make you feel any better, but as I understand it, the Mormons only deal with the State Archives in Slovakia. Therefore, if the record books that interest you were not filmed by the Mormons, that means that they were not in the State Archives. They could be in a regional archive, or in the town itself and never transferred. Debbi

To add to the discussion re: Henry's topic of Lipto St. Miklos: perhaps there was never a separate register for this locale? Instead, a nearby larger community may have registered births, marriages, and deaths. As a= n example, I have found dozens of such events for Ferto" Szt. Miklos in the=

the reason, Jewish records have been found included there. I am sure others will know why. Sorry, I do not.

My experience working with Hungarian metrical records seems to contradict
the above thesis: if a village was too small to have a anyakonyvvezeto rabbi, rabbi in charge of metrinomical records, then the district rabbinate would keep the records. I have met with many instances of this practice. Does anybody met with different practice?

I hope , you are adding these family trees you are posting to AJGS's Family Tree of The Jewish People. While I am researching four lines, I have thousands of surnames in collatoral lines (including Weisz and Weiss) and here is where the benefit lies. It is a lot of messeges in a lot of bottles, as submissions are for prior and subsequent matches. As the FTJP grows it will become as indispensible resource as the AJGS Cemetery project's data.

It's called "The Forum of the Jewish Communities of the Former State of Czechoslovakia". The abbreviations contained on the list are:

To add to the discussion re: Henry's topic of Lipto St. Miklos: perhaps there was never a separate register for this locale? Instead, a nearby larger community may have registered births, marriages, and deaths. As a= n example, I have found dozens of such events for Ferto" Szt. Miklos in the=
registers of the Deutschkreutz community.

If anyone wants to get a passenger list soundex search or a passenger list retrieval, email me and I will give you a company name to contact by phone with a toll free number to get such searches done. They also do census searches and other searches as well. I ask for email so I can see how many people want this done. I do not make a commision.
Thank you.

To Henry and other: I have heard and read numerous times that if no Jewish records exist for a town, try the church records. For whatever
the reason, Jewish records have been found included there. I am sure others will know why. Sorry, I do not.
Regards, Linda Cohen cohentalk@aol.com Michigan USA Dear Linda,
My experience working with Hungarian metrical records seems to contradict
the above thesis: if a village was too small to have a anyakonyvvezeto rabbi, rabbi in charge of metrinomical records, then the district rabbinate would keep the records. I have met with many instances of this practice. Does anybody met with different practice?

To Susanna and others
I hope , you are adding these family trees you are posting to AJGS's Family Tree of The Jewish People. While I am researching four lines, I have thousands of surnames in collatoral lines (including Weisz and Weiss) and here is where the benefit lies. It is a lot of messeges in a lot of bottles, as submissions are for prior and subsequent matches. As the FTJP grows it will become as indispensible resource as the AJGS Cemetery project's data.
