Do you know something about the origins and actual members of the

And about KITAIGORODSKY in the former USSR?

Thanks

Canadian records #general

Joan Rosen <jrosen@...>

I am interested in locating any records which might help me determine what
year my relatives entered Canada >from the U.S., and when they left to
return to the U.S.

They are not in the 1920 census in the U.S. I have a photograph labeled
1915 of a store they are supposed to have owned in Calgary. A relative
says she thinks they returned to this country in 1923. Are there census
records for Canada between 1915 and 1923?

I do not know by what route they would have entered Canada. They had
previously lived in Philadelphia, and may have gone first to Seattle and
then to California before finally settling in Miami!

I tried the web site for Canadian National Archives but was unable to get
any really useful information, and I am not planning a trip to Canada for
genealogical purposes.

Thanks.

Goldstein/Shonfeld #hungary

Touvia Goldstein <touviagoldstein@...>

Hello H-SIG friends,

Permit me to post one more puzzle seeking for help:
My GOLDSTEIN FAMILY is linked to
the SHONFELD FAMILY through the mariage of Avrom Hayim Shonfeld with
Leah Kreindl Goldstein (late 1800s). Among other children they had one
Meir Shonfeld that came to USA in early 1900s and settled in the New
York area.Became a Democratic Party activist.(Tamaha Hall or something
similar). He had at least 2 sons Abraham and Dudley (Hayim Nota) and 2
sisters Minnie married to a certain Kedson and Rebeca.

Dudley Shonfeld was the Psychologist or Psychiatrist that helped the
police to capture Hauptman, acussed and convicted of the kinapping of
the Lindenbergh child.

Could anybody suggest any way on how I could trace this branch of the
family's decendents?

INS Can't Find a File/Message-Number: 23/16 October 98 #general

Charles F. Printz <cfphrai@...>

Irene Newhouse <newhoir@mail.auburn.edu>, in part, said -

Has anyone ever had this experience? I requested the INS file on a
deceased cousin [an FOIA request] & have just gotten a reply that
their indices indicate the file exists, but they can't find it, that
I can consider this an adverse finding & appeal it, that they will
keep looking for it. If I file an appeal, will this make them more
liable to keep looking for it? Does anyone know what can cause a file
to disappear, other than carelessness, that is?
Dear Irene -

I am an immigration attorney and wish to advise that the misplacing of
files by INS is not unusual at all. Not knowing how much info you
provided to them, or the INS office where the initial file was held, I
can't really advise you correctly.

As a rule of thumb, however, it is always easier for INS to locate a
"misplaced" file if you can provide them with the person's "A" number
a/o Social Security Number. It is better to provide the "A" number if
you know it.

Absent the "A" number you should refile your FOIA request with the local
office that received the initial application >from your relative, as well
as with the Washington, DC office. You can also file a letter requesting
corrective action be taken (enclosing all correspondence between you and
INS on the matter) with the Inspector-General of the Immigration &
Naturalization Service at the US Department of Justice in DC.

Good luck with your search..........

Best,

Chuck Printz

Helo SIG friends,

Permit me to post the following puzzles:

My GOLDSTEIN FAMILY, to the best of my knowledge (1850s) originates
from the village Nizni Orlich in NE Slovakia. One of the missing
branches that I am looking for are the decendents of the sons of
Mordechai Goldstein who probably lived in Ortotowa, Slovakia, very
near to Nizni Orlich. Their names where Moishe, Hayim and Samuel
Goldstein that emigrated to the States in the early 1900s and settled
in the New York area. Later they brought to the States their siblings
Herman and Rivka Goldstein that settled in Cleveland, Ohioand after
the war their surviving sister Leah that also settled in Cleveland
but, because of unknown family disagreements contact was lost between
these two family branches. I am in contact with the Cleveland branch
that have no information.I would be very happy to receive suggestions
and advise on how to find the decendents of Moishe, Hayim and Samuel.

One brother until a few years ago was still living in Slovakia and I
visited him. As he does not answer letters, how could I found out if
he is still alive?

Seeking SAKOFSKY or SACKETT #general

David W. Harris <dharris1@...>

In 1906, my Grandfather Max SAKOWSKY (later SAKOFF), left Rechitsa for
Alexandrovsk, where he married Sarah GOLDBERG and then proceeded to New
York via Germany and Liverpool. Already in New York since about 1882 were
his aunt and uncle; Israel and Ettie SAKOFSKY. Some of their children
through at least 1889, were born in New York and by the 1900 census they
had moved to Providence, RI with Meyer (b. 1882), Nathan (b. 1883), Annie
(b. 1885), Jacob (b. 1887), Maurice (b. 1889), Lillian (b. 1892), Louis (b.
1894), David (b. 1896), and Minnie (b. 1899).

Maurice SAKOFSKY (birth certificate says Moses SAKOWSKY) later became
Morris SACKETT, married Evelyn SERGY and was a businessman owning The
Greeting Card Store in Providence.

I am seeking the descendents of the SAKOFSKY's and any help will be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Sara (Sakoff) Harris
