Suggestion on how to label photographs #general

PPilling <ppilling@...>

There has been some discussion on line re photos. Please do NOT label photos
with a felt tip pen, regular pen or hard pencil. These can "bleed" through.
Also do not type words on a label and stick it on the back of a photo!

I strongly recommend you acquire an acid-free pen.

For all kinds of ARCHIVAL photo supplies get a FREE catalog >from one of the
following:

Light Impressions 800-828-6216
Rochester, NY www.lightimpressionsdirect.com
..................................................
Century Photo Products 800-767-0777
Brea, CA www.20thcenturydirect.com
..................................................
University Products 800-628-1912
Holyoke, MA www.universityproducts.com
...................................................
I have tried other companies but always return to one of the above. I have
purchased archival type paper, plastic covers, acid-free boxes, special photo
corners and of course pens of various sorts (Film/print making, pH testing,
red-eye removal etc.)

I feel that if one wants to preserve photographs (and I am sure all
jewishgenners do) it behooves one to buy the best materials one can in order to
do so

AND l) if you want to display an old photo, display a copy and keep the
original away >from strong light.
2)keep all photographs flat, in acid-free boxes
3)beware of keeping photographs in the attic or basement as
temperatures
may fluctuate and there may be moisture
4)never staple or use paper clips on photos. (Some people do)
5)date photos, indicate the names of persons in them and where photo

was taken
6)catalog your photos so you know exactly what you have.

There is so much more to say about preserving photos.... but if I have
encouraged some people to follow one or more of these ideas they won't be
sorry. Pat Pilling, Birmingham, MI

You are probably searching for town now located in Central Romania
(Transylvania), called Brasov. This town was known in German as Kronstadt
(previous names: in Hungarian- Brasso and in Romanian- Orasul and Stalin).

Town was founded by the Teutonic Knights. The substantial degree of German
autonomy ended at the end of 19th century.

Difficulty with Polish Names #general

AnieDoodle

I have been able to identify a number of my ancestors >from Poland. I am
however, having a very difficult time with the Polish names. I have no idea
how to pronounce them, and no idea what the English equivalents may be. As I
can only identify the names by sight, I find myself getting really bogged down.

I am looking for someone who would be willing to help me by providing English
"equivalents" for my Polish names.

Please e-mail me privately if you think you can help me.

Thanks in advance !

Tulchin #general

Eguralnick@...

<<I have been hearing >from many people who have had ancestors from
Tulchin. It seems strange so many people coming >from this area go to
Philadelphia are not connected in some way. There were so many cousin
marriages....
Can anyone tell me how many Jewish people lived in Tulchin in the
1850s?>>

I did some small research at a Jewish library in San Francisco the other day
and learned the following information on Tulchin >from the Jewish Encyclopedia
(presented here in very abbreviated version):

Jewish community first mentioned in 1648 when Tulchin was conquered by Cossack
forces who massacred inhabitants. The massacre was written about in a play,
and in a few other literary sources.

Settlement was renewed, but attacked by the Haidamacks in 1743 and 1768.

In 1897, 10,055 Jews lived there, forming 62% of the population.

Severe pogroms occured in 1919. Jewish population in 1926 was 7,708 (44%).

In 1941, the 3,000 Jews who remained in Tulchin were transferred to the camp
of Peczara .

In 1959 there were about 2,500 Jews in Tulchin (21%).

Hope this is helpful.
