Help >from anyone would be appreciated. My great grandparents (maternal)
arrived >from Minsk, Russia some time around the revolution. Could not
have been after 1902 as they had met and married in Chicago, IL by
then. My great grandmother arrived as Bertha COHEN with 2 sisters. My
great grandfather arrived alone as far as I know. I am in hopes of
locating my greatgrandmothers family. Most of her family was left in
Minsk and do not even think i could locate them there as COHEN is very
common name. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated.
No one else in my family is particularly interested but I would like to
know as far back as possible. Thanks for your time.

Dear Madam

In the estate of Lydia TRITT, born 1919 in Drohobicz and deceased in 1998
we are looking for the next of kin of Mrs. TRITT in order to establish the

The parents of Lydia TRITT were TRITT, Abraham Herman, born July 2, 1862

Mindel nee LORBEERBAUM, born June 30, 1877 in Drohobytsch, daughter of
Natan and Taube nee HOROWITZ.

So far as we know the couple Tritt-Lorbeerbaum lived later in Czernowitz.
The father of Lydia Tritt was married twice. Before he married Mindel nee

Do you have any records or publications of the parents of Lydia Tritt and

We should also know the descendants of the first marriage of Abraham Tritt.

We thank you for your help.

Searching: Unknown Cousin Laser CHAIFETZ / CHEIFETZ #general

AZ61BROOK@...

Dear JewishGenners,

While looking thru passengers lists for our relatives, Nathan CHEIFETZ, and
children: Fanny(Feige), Benny(Ellie Ber), Max (Mendel) and Irving (Zelig), it
was discovered that Benny, came over on the SS Columbia >from Liverpool on May
14, 1906, with an unknown cousin named Laser / "Luhshuh", who was 26 at the
time.

Our family has only a vague, vague recollection as to who this person is.
It is possible that he is the son of Nathan's brother, name not known.

We do know that Nathan came >from the Vitebsk area, although
the children had different POB's; Kolyshki, Mogilev, Vitebsk.
Nathan was born in 1855, and his father's name was Isaac.

If anyone out there has this "Laser" CHAIFETZ / CHEIFETZ on their trees,
please e-mail me with whatever information you have.

On the passenger list, it says they were to go to a cousin Nacham ABRAMSON, at
40 Murray St. The copy is dark, so I am not sure as to the correct spelling
on the address, or the name. New York, is the port of entry, and where the
family lived, Bklyn, specifically. The Murray St. address is for NYC.

All info, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bonnie Miller
SF, CA

PS: It was also found out that Benny married a cousin, Ida
ABRAMSON. Any takers on the ABRAMSON name??

WWII records #general

Martha Lev-Zion <martha@...>

To obtain US WW II records, I wrote to:

National Personnel Records Center
Military Personnel Records
9700 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63132-5100

USA

and requested the complete records of my father. I gave them his birth
date, place, his SSI number which I found online, and proof of his death.
They sent me back, in a very quick time, a dossier about an inch and a half
thick[!] that was absolutely fascinating. I did not know that he was such a
hero and was riveted to the chair to read his entire service record and the
awards and medals that were presented him by the USA and by friendly
foreign forces. It is well worth trying to obtain those records! They also
told me all about his work prior to his being recruited, his training for
his missions, what his missions were. I still have not been able to digest
it all.

Revizskie Skazki-what are they? #general

MarkGrekin <markgrekin@...>

Dear Jewishgenners,

In recent weeks there was a discussion about "Revizskaia Skazka", its
worthiness and believability.
Robert Weiss >from Palo Alto said that he looked up the word "skazka" in 1994
Harper Collins Russian Dictionary, found it to be "fairy tale" and concluded
that, on this basis, data in "Revizskaia Skazka" should not be bellieved.
It's risky to take one word out of content (phrase) and make a judgment.
Imagine a Russian speaking person trying to find a Russian meaning for English
phrase "Pile up the rocks" After checking his/her English dictionary and
finding what "to pile" and "rock" are, he/she, would come up with something
like "to gather or collecting stones". That the phrase can mean "to earn plenty
of money" would hardly come to his/her mind.
In that, Russian expressions are similar to English ones. You cannot divide a
noun "skazka" >from an adjective that describes it "revizskaia" to make a
judgment.
According to famous Russian analyst of Russian language Vladimir Dal' (see his
work "Dictionary of live Russian language" printed in Saint Petersburg in 1882)
"Revizskaia Skazka" is what it is- a census.
Now-a days Russians use a more contemporary phrase "perepis' naselenia" =
"Revizskaia Skazka"
As to the worthiness of ""Revizskie Skazki" (plural) - there might be errors;
even the last American census taken with all contemporary techniques has margin
of error 1 2 to 3%.
Hope this will settle the matter.
Mark Grekin

MODERATOR'S NOTE: While the original question on this subject was
definitely genealogical in nature, the discussion has now drifted into
the world of language, translation, etc. It is now time to move back to
genealogy and end this aspect of this discussion.
