Searching For Naomi ZIKMUND-FISHER #general

E Elsar <eelsar@...>

While searching through the Jewishgen discussion archives for the surname
KAMPF, I came upon a message >from Naomi Zikmund-Fisher (January, 1996).
In this message she mentioned the surname Kampf, among others, and
stated that she could trace these names to the Vilna Goan.

I tried the E-Mail given and found that the server no longer exists.

She apparently teaches in the Pittsburgh Public School system.

I would appreciate if any of you would help me in finding her current
address or E-Mail.

A very Happy New Year to you all

Jews' free school, London #general

ANDREW KINDLER <AKINDLER@...>

Hello,
I have been doing research on my mother's family, the CAPLINs, and a
new-found cousin gave me some interesting information. He told me that my
grandfather and his brothers originally came >from Russia (formerly spelled
KAPLAN), and were brought to London, England by the Rothschild family. I
just found information via the internet saying that the Rothschild family
helped fund the Jews' Free School. They "provided immigrant children with
a refuge and a means of escape >from poverty, educated them, anglicized them
and sent them out to the world fit to contribute to society."
Is anyone familiar with this organization? Do you know if there are
existing records that would help me with my research?
Thank you!

London wedding circa 1890 #general

David Gordon <dgordon@...>

My ggf, Lazar (Louis) GORDON, was born in Kaunas (?) around 1866. He
emigrated to England at some later date, but whether he did so with any
family or alone is unknown. His first child, Nathan, was born in London
in 1893 as were all but the last two of his children. >from this I
surmise that he was married in London, probably sometime between
1890-92. His wife, Bluma (Flora) LEVIN was also >from Kaunas so it is,
unfortunately, also possible that they were married before they
emigrated. However, working on the assumption that they were married in
London, is there any way at all of determining (or to search) which shul
they were married in? Please reply privately--unless this seems likely
to be of broader interest.

Hebrew/Yiddish name #general

DREIMAN <m4fab4@...>

Has anyone heard of the name "Marem"? My great-grandmother >from
NovyBuk,Odessa was called Marem until she reached Argentina where they
named her Maria. Her Russian passport states her name as Marina.
I have asked the rabbi and he states he does not recognize this name as
Yiddish or Hebrew and says it is most likely Miriam. The family insists
it was Marem.

Thanks for your suggestions,

Emigration records-Poland to US #general

Alice Greenberg <a-agreenberg@...>

Hi JewishGenners :

Two questions: Does anyone know whether there are any records of
requests made to leave Poland for the USA in late 1890-early 1900 period.
If yes, >from where can I request copies of same.

Does anyone know whether the City of St Paul MN had anything comparable to
the NYC Directories in the early 1900's? If so, where can I get copies?

Thanks. Alice Greenberg

Faulty URLs - help needed #general

martin b mannlein <matthewm@...>

I recently tried to access several web sites that fellow Jewish Genners
cited.
In the first case, www.awf.wroc.pll/~romek/hobby/cmen.htm (jewish
cemeteries in Poland home page) the site was in Polish, and all the info
concerned physical therapy and sports!.

In the 2nd case, www.wu-wien-ac.at/groups/ukraine_hp/pics/ukrmap.jpg
(detailed map site of the Ukraine) I was advised that there was no such
address.

Has any one else tried to access these sites?

Re: German army records 1870? #general

Irwin Nack <inack@...>

At the end of WW2, the American Army captured extensive German military
records which have been microfilmed are held at the College Park, MD
branch of the National Archives. Athough the bulk of the microfilms
(which number in the tens of thousands) are >from the Nazi era, however,
there are several hundred films of records >from the pre-Nazi era. Some I
believe go back to the 1600s.

These records are catagorized under Record Group 242[RG-242]. A general
description of this record group can be found at the following link:

http://gopher.nara.gov:70/0/inform/guide/200s/rg242.txt

The Archives do have more detailed descriptions of their holding than
what is on their web page, so it may be a good idea to contact the
archives for more detailed information.

Good Luck
