Faulty URLs - help needed #general

martin b mannlein <matthewm@...>

I recently tried to access several web sites that fellow Jewish Genners
cited.
In the first case, www.awf.wroc.pll/~romek/hobby/cmen.htm (jewish
cemeteries in Poland home page) the site was in Polish, and all the info
concerned physical therapy and sports!.

In the 2nd case, www.wu-wien-ac.at/groups/ukraine_hp/pics/ukrmap.jpg
(detailed map site of the Ukraine) I was advised that there was no such
address.

Has any one else tried to access these sites?

Re: German army records 1870? #general

Irwin Nack <inack@...>

At the end of WW2, the American Army captured extensive German military
records which have been microfilmed are held at the College Park, MD
branch of the National Archives. Athough the bulk of the microfilms
(which number in the tens of thousands) are >from the Nazi era, however,
there are several hundred films of records >from the pre-Nazi era. Some I
believe go back to the 1600s.

These records are catagorized under Record Group 242[RG-242]. A general
description of this record group can be found at the following link:

http://gopher.nara.gov:70/0/inform/guide/200s/rg242.txt

The Archives do have more detailed descriptions of their holding than
what is on their web page, so it may be a good idea to contact the
archives for more detailed information.

Good Luck

One cannot check archives before 1997 even using Netscape. Maybe you want
to e-mail the publication with your question to jconline@jchron.co.uk.

Re: 2000 Census #galicia

Beth Wellington <bwelnrfp@...>

I think genealogists better start objecting to the idea of a census poll
instead of an actual count.
Curiously, although I don't know why, I have not been counted in a census
during my adult life (1980, 1990), so I think that the term "actual count"
is naive.

I always (even with death and birth certificate requests)send one per
envelope and sign my name in ink (underneath the typed, readable, name, of
course <grin>). I also put the phrase "Thanks in advance" in my requests.

If you were doing research and copying documents all day, wouldn't you
appreciate a "thanks" once in a while?
