need help in Tel Aviv #general

Meyer Denn <lionsden@...>

I recently had a meeting in Haifa with an elderly, physically handicapped
cousin, he revealed to me that there was one last cousin >from a branch
that I had previously been unable to locate any information. He proceeded
to explain
that when he had arrived in Israel, strait >from the death camps in 1946, he
located his mother's first cousin and her husband in Tel Aviv. He remembered
that their family name was either MAYER or MEYER, he wasn't sure how they
pronounced it. They lived in an apartment at Hayarkon 22. They had a son
who was an attorney and would be about 55-65 years old today. This is ALL
that he could remember.

I looked through old telephone directories....no luck. I went to the State
Association of Lawyers and obtained a list of all attorneys in Tel Aviv and
called each one...no luck. I went to the Interior Ministry.....nope. I went
to the Jewish Agency (Batya Unterschatz) .....she put up a valiant effort,
but.....no luck. I went to the building at 22 Hayarkon....no one remembered
them. All the people currently living in the building are recent residents
(last 5 years). One lady did remember the name of a lady who had lived in
that building for 60 years prior to her death. Her name was Rebecca
Shaltiel, originally >from Salonika, Greece. She had two daughters, both
married, but she could not remember her married name. At least one of the
daughters lived in Rehovot, where the mother lived when she died.

Does anybody have any ideas???? How can I locate these MAYER/MEYER
relatives? The parents would be too old to be alive today, but I need to
contact the son, or grandchildren.

It is true that two copies of the vital records books were
kept in the Kingdom of Poland. Sometimes both copies of a
particular book have survived, sometimes one, sometimes the
other, sometimes none.

Sadly, in the case of Chmielnik, nothing survives prior to
1876, due to a disastrous fire which occurred there in that
year. The 1876 fire destroyed practically the entire town:
208 residential buildings and and 416 commercial buildings
were completely destroyed.

See any standard reference work on Chmielnik for details:
- The Chmielnik Yizkor Book (Tel Aviv, 1960)
- "Chmielnik", in "Slownik Geograficzny", Vol. I, page 588.
- "Chmielnik", in "Encyclopedia Judaica", Vol V, cols 484-485.

An extensive article on the history of Chmielnik will be
published in the next issue (II:4) of the "Kielce-Radom SIG

Most of the hyperlinks are English accessible, or English only. It is
a most valuable site for genners and Jewish genners in particular. If
you read Hebrew, you can press a certain button and the gibbersih turns
into Hebrew.
Most of the time the Hebrew is simply a translation of the English or vice
versa.

Litvaks from Bielsk, Poland #general

AliAgins <aliagins@...>

David LITVAK lived in Bielsk, Poland up to the late 1920s. No info
from that time.
He had a large family. He was a twin to Avrom Litvak. Both men seem to
have had the same middle name Alter. Most of Avrom's children came to US
and so too his widow Hannah. They all came in at Baltimore. Hannah died
in or about 1932.
In the US most of them took the name GOLDBERG/GOLBURG ?? There was a uncle
that sponsered them. One brother and one sister remained in Russia..and
the brother Mikal was a soldier.
I'm looking for any info about this family.

I just received a death certificate for Gabriel ARONSON born 1872 in Minsk,
Belarus. Its difficult to read what the informant put down for name of father.
On his headstone it looks like Abraham, which is what we thought, however on
the board of health records it says something like Tana or Jana ARONSON. Would
anybody be familiar with this as a name? Or could it be short for something?
