Searching Smolowicz / Smolevichi and MATUSEWICZ #general

Jack & Mariann

Hi,
I am looking for any information on the town of Smolowicz in Belarus. My
Grandfather built a flour mill there in the late 1800's to early 1900's. It
was built on a river to take advantage of the water power. The family I am
looking for is MATUSEWICZ. One part of the family had a large house and a
large family in Smolevichi. The other part of the family had a large truck
farm and employed young girls to work in the field in Smolevichi. Any
information would be very much appreciated.

Vienna to Budapest in 1938 - records? #hungary

If you want to read more detail about the deportation process from
Vienna to Budapest, at least as it happened in my family, I wrote some
of my father's family history a few years ago and posted it on a blog
I write. The deportation stories are at

If you read these 3 posts in isolation, what you need to know to
follow them is that Apu and Anyu are the Hungarian names for Father
and Mother, and that their three sons are Hans, Peter, and Tibor.
Peter was my father.

Many Hungarian Jews were deported to Hungary soon after Austria's
Anschluss by Germany in March 1938. This was the case for my father
and his brother and parents in 1938. Being Hungarian, it wasn't a
matter of choosing where to flee: they weren't given a choice of where
to be deported. In the case of my father and his brother, they were
arrested, escorted on a train to the Hungarian border at Sopron by
police, and told to cross the border and never return.

Volunteers needed who know Yiddish and MS Word #yizkorbooks

Joel Alpert <jalp@...>

Yizkor-Books-In-Print Project is looking for Yiddish speakers who are
mildly proficient with using MS WORD and have about 2 to 3 hours a
week to devote to a project that publishes translations of Memorial
Books (Blach Buchs) of destroyed Jewish communities of Eastern Europe.

We need help with translating captions of images and placing them into
newly translated books using MS Word in preparation for publishing.

The original books were written in the 1950s-1970s mostly in Yiddish
and some in Hebrew. The Yizkor-Books-in-Print Project has already
published 46 books.

People fluent in Yiddish with a knowledge of MS Word would be very
helpful to the project to facilitate our ability to publish books more
quickly. All work on the project is done by volunteers.

Books are sold at very low prices to enable this unique literature that
captures the intimate history of the Shtetls to be available to as many
people as possible. The project is part of JewishGen.org, the primary
source of Jewish genealogical information and it not-for-Profit.

See http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/ybip.html for a listing of all our
currently available books.

If you can help in any way please contact me directly at
