In my Lapidus/Lapedus research I have often found LAPIDUS' with the first
name of Chlavna, Chlavina and Chlawne. This is in my own particular
Branch of Lapedus ' as well as the many other Lapidus families I am
researching. I am wondering if anyone has ever heard of this name before
, and if so, where it originates from.

In relation to my Choritz family, I am searching for any information
on a Rabbi Zvi Koretz, Chief Ashkenazic Rabbi of Salonika in 1941.
He was referred to in the book "The Cross and the Pear Tree" by
Victor Perera.

Recently, mention was made on the Digest about the surprising fact of the
large number of Jews living in Chelsea, MA in 1920, who arrived there from
Kovno. In all probablility, they came >from Kovno Gubernia and not just from
the city of Kovno itself.

I do not want to "rain on anyone's parade" <g>, but in the 1920's, thirty (30)
Jewish families >from the shtetl of Pusalotas, Lithuania were living in
Jacksonville, Florida. I am biased, of course, (my father came >from Pusalotas)
but can anyone top that?

presented, were based on a letter Martha Lev-Zion received >from a researcher
(archivist) at Klaipeda University.

Key points in the letter are as follows:

At the end of World War Two the Germans attempted to take the Klaipeda (Memel)
archive with them as they retreated westwards, some parts were left behind.
The documents disappeared somewhere in East Prussia. However, Polish scholars
have recently confessed that part of the Klaipeda archive is stored,
uncatalogued in the vicinity of Olsztyn. We are trying to find the means to
copy this resource and house it in Klaipeda. Another part of the evacuated
archive disappeared near Pillau (now under Russian control). A third section
is preserved in the Lithuanian Central State Archives (Lietuvos Centrinins
Valstybinis Archyvas - Oskaro Milasiaus g. 21, LT 2051 Vilnius). Lithuanian
scholars have neglected this (largely >from ignorance of German) and it too is
very poorly catalogued.

We are working on the Jewish community of western Lithuania (Zemaitija, across
the border >from East Prussia) as a separate research project, but this is in
its infancy. The Centre for West Lithuanian and Prussian History was
established three years ago to carry out research into Lithuania's relations
with her Baltic, German and Slavonic neighbours. We also specialize in the
history of western Lithuania and are just beginning to build up a strong local
archive (mainly of copies) with the cooperation of various national and
foreign archives. Unfortunately, we severely overestimated the capacity of our
archival base, which is not such as would throw much light on individual
family history now, although we do hope to remedy this eventually.

I am aware that there is an 1848 census of Hungary. I am also aware that
there is an 1869 census of Hungary. Does anyone know if there are any other
censi??(censuses) taken between 1869 and World War I. I am most interested in

Jewishgen changed servers about 2 weeks ago. When that happened, all of
the SIG subscriptions were automatically set at the digest mode. If you
want the individual mailings back, instead of the digest, just follow
the instructions posted on this SIG last week, and again today. Then
your mailbox will be full again.

I think that the number of posts are down generally here. Probably due
to vacations, exhaustion >from the seminar, Lou being in Slovakia etc.
