Philadelphia City Archives #general

DAVID SNYDER <ds66@...>

Will a kind researcher with extensive experience in the workings (and
ways to get beyond the bureaucracy) of the Philadelphia City Archives
for birth, marriage and death certificates please respond to me
privately. I am a former Philadelphian residing in Israel who wants to
find the most expedient method of obtaining such records - I have an
extremely long list of requests and fear the clerk in the archives will
be none too happy to complete my request in bulk.

Thank you for your assistance,

Dealing with microfilm machines - help #general

Claire Petersky <petersky@...>

After just two hours in the National Archive office here in Seattle my arm
was sore (and has been sore all day) >from cranking the handle around and
around to get to the records I was interested in. And I'm young, do
push-ups and aerobics in my spare time! What do old folks do? They do have
a machine for the disabled, but I'd be embarrassed to request it when I am
perfectly able-bodied.

And my stomach was ibbeldick -- almostly like a seasick -- >from looking at
the records go by. By the time I learned not to look unless the film was
completely still, it was too late.

Ugh! Any suggestions/tips >from veteran users of microfilm readers how to
make the physical use of these things less bothersome? (not like I'll get
baby-sitting again, and be able to return to the office anytime soon...)

Ketubah Date Question #general

Fuji Television <FUJITV@...>

My maternal grandmother's ketubah--a document printed in Aramaic on one
side and English on the other--conveniently reflects both the Jewish and
secular date of the her marriage. I checked the JewishGen calendar
converter to make sure that indeed the two dates--October 10, 1920 and 28=

Tishrei 5681--correspond with each other. (Incidentally, I checked both
ways!) The NYC Dept of Records, however, has no record of her marriage i=
n
the year 1920 in the Borough of Manhattan even though she was married at =
a
synagogue in Manhattan (Ohab Zedek Zichron Ephraim) with the officiating
rabbi being the founder of Zichron Ephraim (now the current Park East
Synagogue), Dr. Bernard Drachtman.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why there is no official record of=

this marriage?

Thanks.

Ft. Washington Synagogue #general

Steven Warner

I would like to locate records in order to find relatives who were members of
the Ft. Washington Synagogue in NYC during the 1920s. There is no such name
listed in address databases that I have checked. The closest is Ft. Tryon
Jewish Center on Ft. Washington, Ave. Did this synagogue merge with another?
If so, does anyone know the name of this synagogue now??

Any relations of Frank Cohen, NY? #general

SGolds7360 <sgolds7360@...>

Hi there

My name is Scott Goldstein, and I'm >from London. My grandfather, Joseph
Goldstein, arrived in London >from Odessa around the turn of the century. Also
present on the boat was his brother Frank, who stayed on the boat, ended up in
NY and whose surname inexplicably became Frank. Frank was what used to be
called a pedlar, selling small wares, no doubt. Does anyone know of this
person, or his descendents? Please contact me.

Surname PAKMAN #general

Burt Masnick

I recently discovered that my great grandmother's maiden name was
PAKMAN. Her married name was Breina PAKMAN BLITZ. She was the wife of
Rabbi Moshe Gedaliah Blitz. She was born in Dinivitz (today DUNAYEVTSY
in Ukraine) and emigrated with her children and grandchildren around
1903 or 1904 to Montreal. Her sister was Bessie Pesa Pakman and Bessie
married Jacob FOX. Breina, Bessie and their offspring also wound up in
Montreal back then. Here's the question. There was (at least) a third
sister of Breina and Bessie PAKMAN. The third sister had a daughter
named Jennie who married a Mr Goldfarb, and lived on Drolet Street in
Montreal (as did Breina and Moshe Gedaliah). If anyone knows anything
about any of these families please contact me at BJMasnick@aol.com I
have a ton of information to share on the Breina and Bessie sides.

Thanks in advance. JewishGen has been a terrific source of info for me
in the past and I am hoping for another "bolt >from the blue".

Researching (Original countries mostly Galacia - The Austro-Hungarian
Empire)I have indicated current countries.
ANTANIR - Botosani, Romania
