How to manage your subscriptions
#hungary
Margarita <uzidog@...>
Dear H-siggers,
I hope everyone sees this (I already post something like this last Friday). In JewishGen there is a page that tells you how to manage your subscriptions. And it works because I did it. Go to: http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen/DiscussionGroup.htm#Managing The only thing you will have to do is, replace the word "jewishgen" to H-sig. Just a reminder: If you decide to get the digest, PLEASE, be so kind as to change the Subject line. Good luck! Margarita Lackó Belgrano uzidog@post1.com

BREST FAMILY <angi@...>
Dear Jewishgenners,
In my researching of LAPIDUS families, I have very often found the name Chlavna, Chlavina and Chlawne listed as a First name. In my own Branch I have about five CHLAVNA'S and in many other unrelated (so far) LAPIDUS branches there are also many Chlavna's. Has anyone ever heard of this First Name before and if so, can they tell me where it originates from. Best wishes, --- ANNE LAPEDUS BREST. Sandton South Africa. RESEARCHING: LAPEDUS/LAPIDUS (all spellings) Lithuania, Latvia, Poland. BREST - Bauska, Latvia.

How did Affidavits for Visas work?
#general
Frank, Werner <Werner_Frank@...>
Can someone explain how Affidavits and Visas were obtained and
processed, and how does one get a copy >from the 1930s period? In the 1930s Jews wishing to immigrate to the USA needed a Visa, obtainable >from a nearby US Consulate. (In my case it was Stuttgart, Germany). In order for a VISA to be issued, assuming a quota is met, one first had to have an Affidavit(s) >from US residents (citizens?) who would vouchsafe the individual so that he would not become a financial burden on society. Thus, relatives, friends and sometimes strangers were beseeched for such Affidavits. In order to generate an Affidavit, what did the sponsoring individual then do? My questions are: 1. What did an Affidavit form look like? Where can one see such a form? 2. Who filled out the Affidavit and where was it sent? Who approved the Affidavit? 3. How did the Affidavit and Visa application come together for subsequent processing? 4. Where and how can one obtain copies of these documents, Affidavit and Visa, today? Thank you for any comments. Werner L. Frank

Book: Bridging Two Worlds

Eguralnick@...
Does anyone have a copy of BRIDGING TWO WORLDS by Sol Landau? It is about
Rabbi Ezekiel Landau 1888-1965, and I saw it mentioned in a very old post in the discussion group archives. I am researching Rabbi Eleazar FLECKELES of Prague, one of Rabbi Landau's students, and am wondering if there is any mention of Rabbi Fleckeles in that book. Thank you, Eva Guralnick eguralnick@aol.com San Francisco

Death Certificate from Israel
#general
Adelle Gloger
Hi, all,
Around 1955 my maternal grandmother fulfilled her life-long dream to go to Eretz Yisroel and "shtarb". She did indeed die there in July 1958 at the age of 85 years. I have in my posession a document entitled " Report of the death of an American Citizen" >from the Department of State, Foreign Service of The United States of America. She died in Tel Aviv and is buried there. This document lists the Registration of Death number___ "issued by the Israeli Ministry of Interior at Tel Aviv" My question is this: What is the address in Israel to contact to get a copy of the actual death certificate? I have looked in the JewishGen info files and could not find the information. Also, none of the online telephone directories are in English. Thanks in advance for your assistance, Adelle Gloger Shaker Hts., Ohio USA agloger@aol.com
