Re: Naturalization Question

Rechtman <rechtman@...>
I found that my grandfather (father's side) was naturalized on Oct 10, 1876yet in the 1900 census it states that he arrived in New York City in 1875. Is this possible? Well, the trick is in how you asses the Census record: The fact that its statiing his arrival date does not mean its a knowledgable answer. Think of this scene: the census taker knock the door (or bell, if the people were well to-do) and someone who looks mentaly capable to reply, and speaks English answers the door. He then asks them to help fill the form. The informant might have been the sister in law >from Chicago, a neighbor or even a spouse who doesn't have the exact date, so they all either guess or estimate. Hence, Census records should always be used with caution; it is not your grandfather who "stated" 1875, it is the CENSUS record that states this; yes, it might not be correct! -Yigal Rechtman + Yigal Rechtman email: RECHTMAN@aol.com + + www.RECHTMAN.com Mirror site:members.aol.com/rechtman + Research: RECHTMAN, Suwalk; Augustow; + WYBRANCZYK, Lomza; FOGLEMAN, Riga; MILLER, + Mazstrow-Maz., Poland; SHER or MARCUS, Kwarsk, Lithuania

I do hope that someone can help.
I have tried to post this on Jewishgen translation service but have been unable to connect. The letters were not clear but I have done my best to decipher them please give it your best guess. There are 2 graves. Henry Greenburg and his widow Rachel Moses. In particular their respective fathers hebrew name which look to me to be the same but with faded letters no vowels and limited hebrew are beyond me! Also typing in english these charachters run left to right instead of right to left so I have run the whole line left to right Rachel died 12/3/1910 taf - resh chet lamed - bet taf - yud cuf vav tuf yud aleph lamed aleph lamed tet nun chet - chet nun vav daled - bet nun - yud cuf vav tuf yud aleph lamed nun pey tet resh hey - shin "cuf - vet - daled resh hey - aleph daled resh - vet tet resh ayin - lamed pey cuf Henry 20/10/1895 vav - chet nun vav daled - vet nun - yud cuf vav tuf yud aleph lamed vet pey tet resh - indecipherable chet vav nun vet - lamed tet fey Just to reiterate these were very unclear so its definitely a best guess scenario Very Many Thanks Mark Mark J Michaels Dragon Hotel UK Dragon_Michaels@compuserve.com

I have recently made a copy of the lists of names for CHMIELNIKE,David, the Kielce-Radom SIG Journal publishes not index lists of vital records, but extracts. The difference between the two is that extracts contain more information. In addition to just a name list, the extracts will indicate such information as: parents, ages, maiden names, occupations, towns of origin, marital status. There is an article in the forthcoming Fall 1998 issue of the Journal that will deal with this subject specifically. It is important to note that, as with many major genealogy projects, the KRSIG has thus far worked only a limited number of towns in the region. Chmielnik is not one of them. We need more researchers willing to perform record extractions. To date, just a tiny handful of us have done all the work. Seeking information about Moshe Katz Yiddish Author from South America.
#general
NormK12065
JGeners,
Possibly some of our South American friends can help me out. I am seeking information about my deceased Grand Uncle, Yiddish author Moshe Katz. I am told that he was born in Poland (possibly Kazimierz Dolny) and had been a businessman in Heidelberg, Germany. He escaped to Argentina and had been trained to be a furrier but was also a writer. He had gone to Buenos Aires and then moved to Cordoba, Argentina. He was listed in the Who's Who of Argentine writers (I do not have a copy of the listing and do not know which year). I was also told he was not married until he arrived in Argentina and possibly was married twice. I do have a picture of him that appeared in an Argentine Jewish publication. Although the caption is missing I was told it described him as a "dichter", a poet. I have been loaned >from a family member a copy of his Yiddish book published in 1946. On the cover is the picture of the devil and a German Swatztika in a flag stuck in a globe of the earth. I had the title translated and it is "This is the Way it Began" a novel by Moshe Katz. It also says "A Novel in 5 Parts". The title of the prolog is "The Mirror". No one knows if he had any children but if so I might have some unknown relatives in South America. I appreciate any help in gathering information about this relative. Who is Ernst Gottlieb
#general
Mitchell J. Block <m.block@...>
In looking through my family's old photo album, family name BLOCK, there
are two photos of a youn man, probably 18-20 years old taken in Holland around 1938. Judging by the large buildings in the background, I assume the picture was taken in a city. The inscription says Ernst GOTTLIEB, but that is all. My father, who was a young boy at the time, has no idea who this is. There is no one else to ask. I would be happy to send a photocopy of this picture to anyone who may think they know who this is. I assume he was related in some way.

Thanks to the incredible work accomplished by Ann Rabinowitz and others
associated with the Kupishok SIG, within the past week or so my "family tree" has moved "back" about 125 years as we have added confirmed identities of my GGGGF, GGGF, GGU, and GGA (and some of their families and descendants). We have already linked up, via Internet, with a few formerly unknown cousins in Israel and South Africa. To put it mildly, it has been an exciting few days. If you have BIRGER antecedents >from Kupishok Lithuania, please let me know and we will see how we may all interrelate (excuse the pun). Mike Berger smberg@erols.com Vienna, Virginia
