Help Needed: Translation of Tombstone #general

Morton & Esther Cohen <cohe176@...>

My thanks to all of helpful people who offered advice on how to improve the
contrast of the photos I took of my mgf's tombstone. Scanning turned out
not to be a solution in this case because of the speckled granite and the
shallow cutting of the inscription. I was able to more legible darker
print made >from which I can identify most of the inscription lettering. My
very limited Hebrew knowledge is also very rusty. While I can piece
together some of the inscription I feel some important parts are missing and
I am hoping that someone on JewishGen will be able to translate the
inscription.

The Calendar info on JewishGen confirms that the my gf's death after sundown
Aug 1, 1903 was Tisha B'Av

Transvaal Miners Strike 1929 #lithuania

Raymond Peentner <rpeentner@...>

Hi Everyone,

This query is probably primarily addressed to those in South Africa, as I
am trying to trace a Phillip LEVINE, according to verbal family history,
he was a 'leader' in the strikes in the 1929 Transvaal Miners Strike and
was subsequently banned or fled and was not again heard >from by the family.

Can anyone shed any light on this man or recommend any published material
which may help me to trace him?

Re: Does Louis=Liber? And what about Goetz, Goetzl, Getzl etc.? #general

Ury Link <uryl@...>

Dear Jewish Genners,
Michael Bernet is right if he said that the Acronym Gimel-Zadik is Ger Zedek
a gentile that convert to Judaism but the second acronym is also right Gimel
-zadik is acronym for Gabbai Zedaka a treasurer for charity fond. In a
Journal >from 1927 ,Reshumot published by Chaim Nachman Bialik ( a great
Jewish poet)the mention the name Getz as Ger Zedek and Gabbai Zedaka also.
So all the2 names are correct, but this are surnames and not first names.
The nickname for Eliakim is Gottshalk and >from this name we get all the
others names :Getshlik,Getz,Gutz,
Gutzel,Gitzel,Gutzlak,Gutztalk,Goetz,Goetzel,Gutzli.
What have the name Gottshalk to do with Eliakim ? In the Bible ,Isaiah 22,20
we read: And it shell come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant
Eliakim the son of Hilkia. In old Germany the word Shalk means a servant and
Gottshalk is The servant God. I think that this is the source to the name
Gottshalk and all the names how derived from. Also Zunz in "Namen der Juden"
Leipzig 1837 page 50 writ that Gottschalk (Gottshalk) is Eliakim and not
Ovadja the relay translation of servant God . We can not translated all the
names ,Dow is a translation of Bear. But Eliakim is not translation for
Gottshalk. The same with Chaim if we want we can translate the Hebrew word
Chaim for Life but the name Chaim don't come >from this source. Until the 10
or 11 century we dont find this name not in the Bible and not in the Talmud
.I read before years and I don't remember the name of the book on this
moment that the name Chaim came >from Spain and the origin of the name is
Jacob, in Spanish is Jacob Jaime speak: Cheime (like Chet) and >from this the
name come to Italian in the 11 or 12 century .Of course it can be that
Genners ask what is with the name Vital , the translation for Life or Chaim
in Spanish?. But I can not give a good answer to this question .(what was
first the Egg or the Chicken ? )But you see the combination Chaim -Jacob
often. Another name or nickname that come >from Jacob that we know is Yzka
,Yazke and Yazie. This name are not derived >from Ytzchak. Eliezer Mintz in
his book "Get Mesudar" Bilguria 1902 page 278 writ about it. He think that
the names come >from the end letters Tzke that we used by the name Jacobtzke,
diminution of Jacob. In the case of the name Yom Tow Lipman we speak
about a famous family name and not as a first name. Yom Tow is a first name
and Lipman is a first name and is a Nickname to Eliezer, ury and Yom Tow.
And to the last remark of Michael Bernet if anyone enjoy these name
challenges as Michael, Yes I enjoy it and I think that this give you a lot
of knowledge in Jewish History and Judaic.
