We are very pleased to announce that we have just received confirmation
from Gary Mokotoff that he will present a program for us in Las Vegas on
"Discovering our Jewish Roots". The date will be Monday, October 19th,
1998 at 7:30 PM. Admission will be free and it will be open to all, as
long as seats are available. We'll have more information on this later
as soon as the details are worked out on the location.

Our September meeting will be held on the second Sunday of the month
which will be September 13. The change had to be made because of Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In October we will be returning to our regular
third Sunday meeting schedule.

The response to our "Mentor Program" has been fantastic, and continuing
with the issue of genealogical correspondence as presented last month,
the September program will cover "Documents of our Ancestors", what they
are and how to find them. Our October meeting will follow this up with
"Using the National Archives".

Everyone is invited to attend the meetings which begin at 1:00 P.M. For
additional information - please contact Carole Montello at:
carmont7@juno.com.

Sorry, I seem to have missed the question someone asked about Abigail De
VALLE [who is found in the Transactions of the Jewish Historical Society of
1932-1935, Vol. XIII]. I just happen to have this one volume in my own
library. You won't find Abigail listed under De VALLE, but under FONSECA
MEZA, wife of Jacob FONSECA VALLE. What did you want to know? Please
contact me privately and I will try to help.

Searching: STARVOLSKY Family #general

BK <bkasser@...>

Anyone know anything about the STARVOLSKY family >from a small shtetl near
Bialystok called Yashnofsky. The shtetl name may not be spelled correctly.
The phonetic spelling is the way I remember my father saying it. My
grandfather changed his name to RUBENSTEIN and emigrated to Detroit Michigan in the late 20's.

I have a black and white picture with two people. The inscription appears to be in Hebrew or Yisddish-in any case I can't read it.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Many thanks to Howard Fink and his group for the
fine Tarnow job. One question and that is UMLAUTS.
Is it at all possible to show Umlauts in the name
when they appear? This applies to any and all names
whenever and wherever they appear. I think this is
a fair question without criticizing the work that
all of the volunteers do.

Hebrew calendar (was: Translation of Tombstone) #general

Daniel Vulkan <daniel@...>

In article <LYR6197-10222--approved-soc-genealogy-
jewish@NEWSPOST.NEWSGUY.COM>, Ury Link <uryl@globalxs.nl> writes
You writ: The Calendar info on JewishGen confirms that the my gf's death
after sundown
Aug 1, 1903 was Tisha B'Av

Is this date good? I think that 9 Be-Av Htrsag(5663) was on 3 August 1903
and not on 1 August, Pleas check it ( I don't have a Jewish calendar from
1903, but if you know that every 19 years the same days and dates come beck
you can check it with the Ancyc.Judaica if you go beck >from 1922 -19 = 1903
).But of course I can do also mistakes.
"The Comprehensive Hebrew Calendar" by the late Arthur Spier (Feldheim
Publishers, 1986) confirms that Tisha B'Av (9 Av) 5663 fell on Sunday 2
August 1903. (And therefore it started the previous evening, 1 August.)

Although the Hebrew calendar includes a 19 year cycle, it is not true to
say that the correspondence with the civil calendar will repeat exactly
every 19 years (although it is only likely to be out by a few days).

There are two reasons for this: firstly, the civil calendar itself is
not regular (it will only repeat exactly every 2,800 years); secondly, a
number of extra adjustments need to be made to the Hebrew calendar
(adding or subtracting a day every few years, according to prescribed
rules), principally to ensure that certain festivals don't occur on
inconvenient days of the week.

For those who are interested, the book I mentioned above describes the
operation of the calendar in great detail; I am sure there are also
plenty of resources on the Web (try looking at the "Calendars" category
on Cyndi's List ( http://www.cyndislist.com ).
