Two historic firsts #general

Carol Skydell <skydell@...>

Posted on behalf of Susan King who is busy packing for the upcoming move to
her new home....

At the recently concluded summer seminar in Los Angeles, JewishGen
announced two historic firsts... and we'd like to bring all Genners up to
speed....

The JewishGen Family Tree of the Jewish People went online on July 14th

and

We have an answer to the question ... "Have You Ever Dreamed of Flying Off
to Far Away Places."..

But first, the FTJP....

Lineages has been doing some reprogramming based on feedback >from the
original beta testing group, and we are now accepting GEDCOM files for
inclusion directly into our online database. If you have not yet submitted
your family tree *online* to JewishGen, please plan to do so at your
earliest convenience. The fastest way to see your tree in the online
version is to submit your gedcom _directly_ to us.

<http://www.jewishgen.org/gedcom/jewishgen.html>

Please follow the directions for uploading, and be sure to read the FAQ
which will probably answer all ...well... at least most of your questions.
<grin>

Based on the many discussions held in this forum earlier this year
regarding the rights of privacy, JewishGen's version of the FTJP is
limited to showing only names and family relationships for people who are
still living.

In order to begin the upload process you will need to
know your JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF) researcher code and password. If
you've forgotten your code, just go the the JGFF and in the SEARCH process
enter any name that you've put into the system. Your researcher code will
be included with your name and address. If you've forgotten your password,
send an email to password@mail.jewishgen.org giving your full name,
address and researcher code. You'll receive your password by return email.

If you have any questions regarding the FTJP they should be addressed to our help desk at <ftjphelp@mail.jewishgen.org>

and now, the other "bigee" <grin>

....an idea soon to be a reality...JewishGen SHTETLSCHLEPPERS is going to
offer you all an opportunity to visit your ancestral shtetls, to photograph
and document the places where your ancestors lived....to create a lasting
record of the lives and the culture that the Holocaust attempted to destroy.

JewishGen SHTETLSCHLEPPERS will be a trip like no other offered...we will
focus on genealogy and gathering as many records as possible and then make
certain they are available to researchers worldwide through a document
storage and retrieval system on the JewishGen website.

The plans are not yet finalized, so we invite you to take a look at what
was presented at the summer seminar. Visit
the ShtetlSchleppers site at:

<http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSchleppers/>

and be sure to fill out and send us the questionaire at the very end! It
will help us finalize the programs. Thanks for your interest and
support....we couldn't do it without ya...

Susan

The name JORTNER #general

Pat Jortner <patp@...>

My husband's father left Europe >from Yaslo. We are told some of his
brothers came >from Dukla. There are others with the same last name from
other towns in what was Galicia. Is it possible that another spelling
or name could sound like JORTNER? I have found the name G=E4RTNER on
birth lists >from Tarnow. Is it possible that this is >from the same
family? Is there anyone out there who has seen this name? And how was
it spelled?
I will appreciate any help I can get. Thank you.

Desperately searching for ANY information on a Rabbi Milton AUGENSTEIN

Thanks!
