Postwar address in Alsace #general

Ed Levine <edlevine@...>

I am seeking to locate a first cousin in France by the name of Janine
Stern BARUCH. She is the daughter of my mother's brother Max STERN,
born c. 1910 in Lichenroth, Germany. He emigrated to Alsace-Lorraine
before WWII, and his last known address was

c/o Freyburger
18 Rue de Tunis
Mulhouse, France

Max, who died in the early 1960s, had a daughter. She is approximately
60 and her married name is Janine BARUCH. Our trail ends there. Can
anyone provide me with any clues about any of these items? Please reply
to edlevine@idt.net. Thanks!

I am posting this on behalf of a PROPST family (to which I do
not belong), that originated in Transylvania. The family is
Catholic, but has a tradition that it has an undocumented
Jewish background. Does anyone know of possible Jewish
connections?

Chelmno death camp #general

Daniel Wagner <Cpwagner@...>

I recently found out that members of my mother's family perished in
Chelmno rather than Auschwitz, as we all believed until now. I did a
net search and found information about Chelmno that I think MUST be
read.

An introductory note by Leon Zamosc about the Chelmno extermination
camp may be found at

http://weber.ucsd.edu/~lzamosc/gchelmno.html

More information on Chelmno may be found at:

http://weber.ucsd.edu/~lzamosc/gmoreinf.html

In addition, there is a most unique document on the web, which
contains final testimonies of the last Jewish prisoners in the death
camp of Chelmno. These were written on a notebook in Polish, which was
found by the liberating Russian Red Army and given to Yad Vashem only
a few years ago.

The testimonies which contain also the victims' last requests and last
regards to possible surviving relatives, were published in Hebrew, as
a personal venture of Mrs. Ester Reiss >from Jerusalem in a booklet
named: "Chelmno". They were translated to English by Ada Holtzman,
together with the introduction of Shmuel Krakowski and Ilia Altman
from Yad Vashem, and posted in Ada's web page at:
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Rue/4017/chelmno.htm

They are painful and hard to read, but they contain surnames and
locations, and definitely have a genealogical value.

Ada Holtzman should be commended for her work.

BOYARSKY related to ALPERT? #general

SBSeales

I have just received the 1902 naturalization record of Harry BOIARSKY of
Sumner Street, E. Boston. He was a clothier, in business with Isydor BOYARSKY
of 13 Maverick Sq. One of the witnesses to Harry's naturalization was Abraham
ALPERT, and a witness to Isydor's 1904 naturalization was Sam ALPERT or
ALBERT.
I am trying to determine if Harry BOIARSKY is my great-uncle. The
naturalization application says 'Poland,Russia' for place of birth. A great-
aunt, Fanny BOYARSKY, married a Jake ALPERT, who owned a movie theater in the
Boston area. It seems there should be a connection!
If anyone can enlighten me, please email me privately. Thanks!

IMPORTANT NOTICE - JewishGen Update/Server Move #general

Susan E. King <susan.king@...>

Don't know about the rest of you, but I feel like I have been on the run
since a few weeks before conference... but there is an end in sight!

We will be moving the servers to a new location during the week... date
still undetermined!

However, it will most likely be Wednesday evening or Thursday evening -
Houston time. Downtime could be anywhere >from a couple of hours to 24
hours... depending upon the availability of "volunteers" to assist with this
process and depending on whether it is a "plug and play" situation, or if we
have some unanticipated technical problems. This will affect all JewishGen
services!!! So please bear with us!

Since the conference, we have been struggling with several major challenges,
one we have resolved, the selection, evaluation and implementation and
training of our new mailing list software. The other, remains to be
resolved, but we are working on it.

JewishGen has pretty much exhausted our current bandwidth. It served us well
for over two years, but the next step will increase JewishGen's monthly
expenses significantly.

Bandwidth relates to the incoming and outgoing "traffic" to/>from our
servers. You can liken it to a "bumper to bumper" traffic jam! <grin> It is
pretty obvious that we will have to be adding some "lanes" on the "road" to
JewishGen.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your
contributions to JewishGen over the last few months, specifically right
before and now post summer seminar.

We sincerely apologize for not being prompt in thanking you personally, as
we have normally done in the past. Hopefully, once settled in again, we can
catch up over the coming few weeks.

Should we not have the opportunity to keep you posted as we near the time we
make the move, should you experience connectivity problem, you now know what
it is all about! We will try to keep it to a minimum... but no promises!
<grin>

Yemenite Jewry #general

mullish <hqm2011@...>

In the various interesting discussions on genealogy in this group I have
seen references to all manner of Jewish groups originating around the
world but so far have not seen a single reference to the Jews of Yemen.

As you might have already guessed, I am married to a Yemenite who left the
country for Israel when she was 6 years old. Her aunt and uncle (also from
Yemen) were recent guests at our home here in New York and as a result of
a particular conversation I had with them I am now anxious to pursue any
leads which would give me access to the Jews of Yemen, either present or
in the past.

Thanking you in advance for any help,

Henry Mullish

Re: Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Russia? #general

Stephen G. Esrati <stevsta@...>

Try to look it up as Biro-Bidjan (spellings vary because of
transliteration >from Cyrillic),
This was Stalin's idea for a Yiddish-speaking homeland for the Jewish
people out in Siberia.
I do not believe Jews were ever the majority, and they certainly are not
today.
The idea was: Who needs Zionism or Judaism, we can take care of the Jewish
problem.
