Help in Cincinnati (II) #general

Daniel Wagner <Cpwagner@...>

I would like to thank the friendly Jewishgenners who have answered my
message. Among them, Judith Romney Wegner kindly and rightfully
suggested that I correctly spell "Cincinnati", so as not to hurt the
feelings of the people who live there.

Finally, the Yiddish newspaper I am interested in (for the years
1925-1932) is the YIDDISHE TSEITOUNG published in Antwerp and
Brussels. Supposedly, my greatgrandfather BenZion WAGNER used to
write articles in that periodical under the pen name "Benye Plepler".
When he died at an early age in February 1930, the journal supposedly
published a long obituary, which I have never been able to find. It
seems that one of the only places on the planet where copies of the
newspaper still exist is the HUC in Cincinnati. The Hebrew U does not
have it. I am looking for this obit and for the articles he wrote. He
also wrote a few plays under his true name, but those are probably
lost forever.

From: "Ricki L. Zunk" <rickiz@mindspring.com>

X-Message-Number: 31

I have now acquired many photos of various family tombstones for my
mother's family buried in Phila., PA. I cannot read or write Hebrew
(for which I now am very sorry). I asked a rabbi/family friend to help
me translate the names. Some of them are, to my experience, unusual.
I'm hoping that some of you more knowledgeable JGers can help me with
them

mgm (Anna Helen) = Osnia (or Osnea) Enya
mgf (Samuel [Simon]) = Yeshayoh
pgf (Samuel) = Osias and Sheyah
pgu (Samuel) = Sendor
pcousin (Lippa) = Lipa

All of these are as written and spelled by the rabbi. Sorry I can't
give you any additional info.

Any and all help is appreciated.

TIA,

The name Osnia or Osnea: it come perhaps >from the Hebrew name Osnat and this
name turn into Osna or Osnea ( "Get mesudar" ,Elasar Mintz pag 309 ).

Osias,Sheya and Yeshayoh are the same names for :Yeshayahu.

Sendor: Is Alexander ( in Hungary the used the name Sandor ).

Lipa: Is a nickname (Kinnui) to Eliezer and Elazar.

Searching: ORLIK/ORLICK Relatives in Springfield, Mass. #general

MMBegun@...

I had heard in the early 1990's that relatives of my grandfather, Morris
ORLIK, had emigrated to Springfield Mass. A distant cousin was contacted by
them because they recognized her name (Orlick) in the telephone book.
Unfortunately, they didn't think to look in the Manhattan phone book, where
they would have found my dad listed, too.

My 94 year old father would dearly love to be in touch with these cousins, who
are descendants of my grandfather's sisters or brothers. World War 2
destroyed all contacts, even though for a period of time packages did get
through to them.

I believe they had moved to Moscow >from TALNOYE in Ukraine prior to the War.
For reference purposes, the family ancestor is Abraham ORLIK, whose son was
Zelig, whose sons included my grandfather, Morris. My father is Jules. (Idel
in Yiddish.) My dad kept the original spelling but other family members
"Americanized" it with a "C" to ORLICK.

Is there anyone reading Jewishgen who lives in or near Springfield and who can
advise me on ways I might reach out to these relatives? They are descended, I
believe, >from a sister of my grandfather's and would not be named Orlik.

For whatever reason, the American cousin who heard >from them several years
ago, is not forthcoming with any information and I've given up asking. I'll
appreciate any advice or assistance. Many thanks --- Mila Orlik Begun in NYC

Searching: CHECHIK in Brooklyn, NY #general

Ricki L. Zunk <rickiz@...>

My pgm, Bessie Friedman RENDELSTEIN, used to tell my father that she
traveled to America with landtsmen by the name of CHECHIK, who settled
in Brooklyn in 1912. Apparently, Bessie lived with these people for a
while.

Does anyone know or know of the CHECHIK family? If so, please reply
privately at <rickiz@mindspring.com>

Hi everyone,

I'm searching for the descendants of Zelig and Faiga GARNICK >from Warsaw,

1) Chana Rivka (born 1882) who married Yisroel Hirsch ZAWISHYNSKI (who
changed thier last name to ZAVIN when they came to New York in the early
1920's). They were my wife's great grandparents.

2) Chaia Rosa (?).

3) Morris SCHEINBERG married Rose (?). They had a son Leonard. They also
came to the States probably in the early 1920's as well.

If anyone knows anything about this family I would really love to hear from
you. Thank you very much.

Searching: ROSENTHAL / PINKUS / Twin Doctors #general

PJL427@...

I am researching the ROSENTHAL Family of the Bronx.
ROSENTHAL was a Romanian Jew who had a Stationary and Paper company that
took up a whole block in the Bronx.

ROSENTHAL was my Grandfather's cousin. My grandfather was Oscar SOMMER
was
the son of Lazar SOMMER and Fanny WIND of Braila, Romania.

ROSENTHAL who lived on the Grand concourse. His wife had already died in
the late 1930's. They had a full time maid and cook in the house. He had
a factory that produced paper, envelopes and stationary. It was a whole
block.

His daughter ESTHER was married to a Dr. PINKUS. There was an ESTHER R.
PINKUS FOUNDATION at the BRONX HOSPITAL.

ROSENTHAL had TWIN sons who are DOCTORS. We are not sure where they
went.
They may have gone to Connecticut.

On the first floor of their house was Esther's husband's office. You
walked up a courtyard and their apt connected to the house. It was 3
stories. On the 1st floor there was a large dining room.

Please help me find this family.

How to manage your subscriptions #hungary

Margarita <uzidog@...>

Dear H-siggers,

I hope everyone sees this (I already post something like this last Friday).

In JewishGen there is a page that tells you how to manage your subscriptions.
And it works because I did it.

Go to:

http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen/DiscussionGroup.htm#Managing

The only thing you will have to do is, replace the word "jewishgen" to H-sig.

Just a reminder: If you decide to get the digest, PLEASE, be so kind as to
change the Subject line.

Good luck!

BREST FAMILY <angi@...>

Dear Jewishgenners,

In my researching of LAPIDUS families, I have very often found the name
Chlavna, Chlavina and Chlawne listed as a First name. In my own Branch I
have about five CHLAVNA'S and in many other unrelated (so far) LAPIDUS
branches there are also many Chlavna's. Has anyone ever heard of this
First Name before and if so, can they tell me where it originates from.

Best wishes,
