Chaya Basia d/o Efraim #general

Angie Elfassi

This is a long shot, but I have found through JOWBR (thank you) my
ggrandmother's tombstone who died 3d September 1902 in Leeds, UK. Aleph Elul -
which was this Sunday!

She was Chaya Basya (Betsy in the UK) married to Shmuel Itshak COHEN and
on the tombstone it says she was the daughter of Efraim.

They were >from Shaki/Sakiai in Lithuania but might have come >from Poland
or Latvia.

Does anyone have on their tree an Efraim with a daughter Chaya Basya?
She was 60 when she died so approx dob 1842....

Thanks and regards,
Angie Elfassi

In my previous message I outlined a way forward for LatviaSIG and indicated
that in the future donations would be required for data acquisition.
No donations should be sent at this time as the first step is to form a
Committee that can run the SIG.

Reinvigoration of LatviaSIG #latvia

Arlene Beare

A number of people have expressed interest in reviving the JewishGen based
Latvia SIG. 2 Past Presidents of the SIG, myself and Marion Werle will be
happy to assist. We are also delighted to have Bruce Dumes who designed the
LatviaSIG webpage agreeing to come back and act as webmaster and we have
already started making changes. We will be migrating the three Shtetl Focus
webpages for Riebini, Varaklani and Subate >from the SIG website into
KehilaLinks and the JewishGen Latvia SIG donation page has been revised to
reflect our new priorities. We are also considering using Social Media such
as Facebook or a Blog to encourage exchange of information on Latvia
research.

However the SIG cannot survive unless at least 4 people come forward and
agree to form a Committee to run the SIG and organise volunteers Anyone
interested in Latvia Research can come forward as we do not have an active
Membership list at present. The newly formed Committee would have a SIG
Coordinator, Membership Secretary, Database coordinator and website
coordinator. One of the aims of the newly formed Committee would be to
work out a Membership plan.

Donations are needed to continue our database work, and Latvia Researchers
can indicate which area (Courland, Latgale or Vitebsk gubernias) they would
prefer to prioritize, or, alternatively, just donate to the general database
fund. A suggested first project would be to expand the 1897 All Russian
census database to include all household members, not just the adults. This
would require volunteers to come forward and under the direction of the
newly formed Committee to translate data. A knowledge of Russian, Cyrillic
and Excel would be necessary requirements. Jewishgen has a format that needs
to be followed when entering data into Excel for the Jewishgen Latvia
database.

We also ask volunteers to come forward and develop the Kehilalinks. You do
not need to know html as the pages are created with a very easy software
programme called Seamonkey which is WYSIWYG(What You See Is What You Get)
It is free and you will get support >from the excellent team running the
Kehilalinks. Details of how to create a KehilaLinks site can be found at

JGSGW September 2016 Meeting Announcement #general

Robin Meltzer

JGSGW September Meeting Announcement
The Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington will host its
September 2016 meeting on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Bnai
Israel Congregation, 6301 Montrose Rd, Rockville, MD.

1:00 PM Schmooze and Mavens Table
1:30 PM Meeting and Program

Speaker Ron Arons Topic:'What's in a Name?'
Trouble!

Ron will use the Genealogical Proof Standard to show how identities can
be merged and separated. In this example, five individuals, all with the
same name, all born in the same general timeframe, and all living in the same
place where one of the individuals lived or claimed to live, all found
trouble, either in business or with women. Is this possible? If
so, how?

It defies probability and statistics. A fun set of stories about
multiple unrelated men who just happened to share the same name and fate
(trouble).

Speaker Biography
Born in New York, Ron Arons was reared a goodie-two-shoes. Aside >from
five moving violations (including driving with his lights on), he has never
been afoul of the law. Ron earned a B.S. in Engineering >from Princeton
University and an MBA >from the University of Chicago. He worked for
many years as a marketer at high-tech companies, including Texas Instruments,
Ashton-Tate, and Sybase, before deciding to work full time on his first
book, The Jews of Sing Sing. Ron became interested in understanding his
roots after he lost both his parents to cancer. In researching his
criminal ancestor's past, Ron has traced his roots to England, Poland, Romania,
Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania. In 2005 Ron won a Hackman Research
Residency Award >from the New York State Archives to continue his research of
New York Jewish criminals. In January 2008, Ron appeared on the PBS
television series, The Jewish Americans, as the acknowledged expert on
Jewish criminals of New York's Lower East Side. Ron tours the country
giving educational and entertaining presentations on Jewish criminals
and Jewish genealogy.

JGSGW Guest Attendance Policy
A non-member may attend the monthly JGSGW meeting as a Guest for a $5.00
fee payable at the sign-in table. The $5.00 Guest fee may be applied
toward payment of annual JGSGW membership dues if dues are paid at the same
meeting at which the guest fee was paid. JGSGW members requiring personal
assistance at a meeting due to a health condition or disability may
bring someone to assist them free of charge.
