#general #germany Questions about Document in Germany #general #germany

Susan Miller

A cousin of mine has a document entitled:

"Auszüge aus dem Registern der Juden der Gemeinde Griesheim Kr. Darmstadt"

It concludes with the following text:

"Die Richtigkeit des Auszugs wird bescheinigt.

Griesheim Kreis Darmstadt, den 27. Juli 1938.

Der Bürgermeister."

The body of the document is a list of all family members from the mid-18th century until the date it was prepared in 1938. My cousin always assumed that this was a document that Jews were required to provide to German authorities for their nefarious purposes.  He is interested in the circumstances surrounding the preparation of this document, i.e.

-Who would have ordered that it be prepared and for what purposes was it ordered?

-How was the family notified that they were required to obtain the document?

-Did Jewish families obtain the list of family members from the Darmstadt city government?

-Was the family required to submit it to the German authorities or was it submitted by the town hall to a German agency?

-Which agency would it have been submitted to?

-How was the information used?

Any information appreciated.

Re: Immigration to US of Avram/Abraham BERCOVICI/BERKOWITZ from #romania

Peninah Zilberman

Hello,

Every guess is as good as any other

Let’s just keep in mind that all immigrants had one objective

To get to the “Golden Medinah”  “ Golden Country”

i.e. USA-America.

So, could be one person bought the tick. Could leave for whatever reason

Another one used it under the first person’s name

Or, simply, they thought to use Pauline name instead of an Yiddish/Jewish name

By the way, you mentioned Romania- what city?/ village?

The main thing is they arrived and made their new home USA.

All the best

New Website: A Guide to Jewish Cemetery Preservation in Western Ukraine #announcements

Tony Hausner

Avoytanu posted in its weekly newsletter the following.  New Website: A Guide to Jewish Cemetery Preservation in Western Ukraine

This site can be found at A Guide to Jewish Cemetery Preservation in Western Ukraine

It is put together by Marla and Jay Osborn and has much valuable information. While I knew a good bit about the various towns connected to my family, I learned about cemeteries I did not know about.  A great deal of very useful information. Greatly appreciated.

navy emblem on gravestone? #general

tom

i was surprised to find this emblem, crossed anchors and a shield under an eagle, which i think is navy, on a relative’s gravestone in texas.

there are similar symbols online, as naval officers’ badges, but i found no records to indicate that he served in the navy, just a draft card and a medical discharge for a non-com infantryman with a similar name.  and i don’t know what the feather next to it means.  any suggestions?

Re: How to determine Warsaw street address? #warsaw

avivahpinski@verizon.net

I know the address in Warszawa of my grandparents' store on Zielna Street in Warszawa - I have a photo and it is listed in the 1928 Warsaw business directory.   Is there a way to find out where it is located today?  There is still a Zielna St in Warsaw and the closest I can get to the address is where the
Macabee Restaurant is now.  However, after the Shoah, many street locations were changed.  Is there a way of finding where addresses or streets were pre- and post Shoah?

Yes I am pretty sure there is. Write to Daniel Wagner or Kamila Klauzinska. I spoke to him two years ago at the Warsaw IAJGS conference and he then sent me pictures of my ancestors' gravestones.

Re: Members of A Feld Family #general

Isme Bennie

I had FELD relatives living in an apartment in Far Rockaway NY in the 1960s. I was given the connection to them by my family in South Africa. After I moved to the US (Manhattan)  I contacted them. An older couple (60s?) who had a married son with a child He had been killed in an accident. Also a daughter living in California. I visited them occasionally but never knew our actual relationship, and I do not remember their names. After I moved to Toronto, I let the connection go. I was not as interested in genealogy  then as I have since become. I hope this gives you a start and I would be pleased to know if you can establish who your FELDs are and if we have a connection. Regards, Isme Bennie

Information on Great Grandmother GLAZER Family #lithuania

BARB

I'm trying to find information on my great grandmother, Rose Rebekah GLAZER KLINE Lepman (Lipman). Immigrated from Lithuania, was widowed before my Grandmother was born in 1895, then remarried a man by the name of Lipman or Lepman. Spellings are all different.
I have some documents that I have gathered but don't know how to proceed further to track down further information. I'm also trying to determine if my Grandmother was one of 4 children or one of 5. There are rumors that she had an older sister that had been ostracized from the family and we would like to determine if this is a rumor or fact and to track her/family down.
I have attached findings (I think all 40 items uploaded?) that I have so far. Can anyone help me ?

Gospitalna Street in Minsk #belarus

Carl Kaplan

My grandfather came through Ellis Island in 1913. He put down his address as Gospitalna ul. 21 Minsk. At least that is what it looks like to me (see attached). Is there still a Gospitalna Street in Minsk? How can I find out if there was such a street in 1913? Thanks.
