Volunteer for transcription project (English) #ukraine

Janette Silverman

We have just received a copy of the English translation of a book
previously published in Russian "The Book of Sorrows". Its contents are
lists of names of Jews >from Crimea who were murdered. There are
thousands of names contained in it. I need a volunteer who can
transcribe these names and some other details into a spreadsheet
template so that the information can be added to the Ukraine Database on
JewishGen, and the names can be added to the Ukraine Master Names Index.

The book is entirely in English and it is typed, so people who have no
language skills outside of English and who cannot easily read
handwritten manuscripts should have no problem with it. I would like to
have 1 person who can take the time over the next several months (6-12
months) do the whole project. The details for transcription are
slightly complicated and having only one person involved in the project
would help eliminated errors. After it is transcribed, I will then need
a volunteer to proofread it.

Thanks
Janette

ukrainian archives - no-go for me so far #ukraine

CP L <guy.f.levin@...>

Using information on the Routes to Roots website, I sent direct
requests to the Vinnitsa and Kamenetz-Podolsky (or maybe it was
Khmelnitzky - I have to check) archives for
birth/marriage/death/census information about my gg-grandfather and
gg-grandmother.

Vinnitsa responded with a scanned letter saying, essentially, that
they don't have anything during the time period. I figure since my
great-grandfather was born in 1877, supposed in Izyaslav (that's where
he says he came >from on the immigration papers), his father would have
been born roughly anywhere in the 1830s to 1850s. Imprecise, I know.
I supplied names: Mendel and Yocheved Leibson.

I have communicated with archives before (thanks to Google translate,
and that I can "decode" and understand a little Russian), but it
hasn't borne fruit.

I cannot afford a personal researcher; maybe I could go in with
someone, or a whole lot of people.

Any other suggestions or stories to share are appreciated!

MODERATOR COMMENT: All surviving documents in the Kamenets Podolsky
archives were transported to Khmelnitskiy following a fire in 2004.
Many of these records have been filmed for the Central Archives of
the History of the Jewish People in Jerusalem, but no one has stepped
forward to organize a fundraising effort to acquire and translate
these records for inclusion in the JewishGen Ukraine database.
Records >from this town are known to exist, but the CAHJP does not
have the funds or the expertise to research or transcribe these
records. Please respond privately if you are interested in hiring
a researcher; to the group if you have other suggestions.

IAJGS Conference and beyond! #france

Rosanne Leeson

Dear Fellow FrenchSIGgers,

As you may noted plans for the 2026 IAJGS Conference in Seattle are well
underway.

There will be FrenchSIG table at Share Fair on Sunday afternoon, August
6, where we hope that many of you will stop by to say hello, or ask
questions! Then on Tuesday morn >from 10:30-11:45
am there is a meeting of the FrenchSIG scheduled. We hope to bring up
the matter of possible SIG projects there, and show an example of just
one such currently in the works, plus discuss the future of the SIG.

However, we are still waiting to hear >from those among you who are
planning to attend! Please do let either Pierre <pierre1928@gmail.com>
or me <rdleeson@comcast.net> know of your plans or intentions ASAP, so
we can plan further! For example:

1 ) I very much need a volunteer or two to be at the SIG table at the
Share Fair with me.

2 ) Even more crucial to the continuance of the FrenchSIG is the
willingness of a couple among you who would be willing to step up to
learn the ropes, and to take over >from Pierre and me as the
Coordinators of the SIG!

We have been coordinating this SIG for nearly 18 years, I believe. We
are now both reaching an age (let's just say - of well over 80!) where
we very much wish to retire. It takes time to learn all there is to
know about running a SIG, working within the JewishGen rules and
guidelines, and also getting to know and work with our French "cousins"
in the Cercle de Genealogie Juive
in Paris. We are willing to stay on to train anyone interested until
they become comfortable, and that can take some time. There are
currently 892 members subscribed to the FrenchSIG. Surely there must be
a few among you who would be willing to step up and keep this SIG going!

Otherwise, the only alternatives are to become an inactive SIG, or cease
to be altogether. We hope that some of you may find that sad! So,
please do let us hear >from you, share any thoughts you may have . And
let us keep the the FrenchSIG rolling on!

Your Co-Coordinators,
Pierre Hahn

The Conference Hotel is Almost Fully Booked #poland

Chuck Weinstein <cmw521@...>

The Seattle Sheraton Hotel has booked all of the available rooms for the
Conference and has only a handful of deluxe rooms left. They are pricing
the deluxe rooms at $239 for Conference attendees. These rooms are
available at other times for $379 per night. Once these rooms are booked,
there will be no more room at the Conference Hotel.

We have made arrangements with the Hyatt Olive 8 hotel, about 4 blocks from
the Sheraton, for a limited number of rooms at $289 per night. Given that
the Conference coincides with the height of the tourism season, and there
are no other major hotels downtown with rooms available, this was the best
we could do. The Hyatt will give that rate to Conference attendees who use
the following link: https://aws.passkey.com/event/15080205/owner/69782/home.
The website is being updated to reflect that information.

As you can tell, Seattle is the place to be, August 7-12. Make your plans
to attend the Conference and reserve your space if you have not already done
so. And if you have not reserved your meals or banquet tickets, you should
do so soon before they sell out. Most of our computer labs have been
waitlisted, and we are arranging to add additional labs. We will not be
able to do that with the meals.

See you in Seattle!
