101 Best Websites for Genealogy in 2016 #general

Jan Meisels Allen

Family Tree Magazine has announced it's 101 Best Websites for Genealogy in
2016. There are many newcomers to the list. Those designated with a star
have that symbol next to their name. Those with dollar signs next to their
name require payment to take advantage of their offerings. To make room for
the new additions, the state-specific sites have been omitted >from this
list, as they now have their own "best" list which will appear in the
December 2016 Family Tree Magazine. JewishGen is listed under the best
International Websites for 2016 category.

To access the list of websites go to:
http://www.familytreemagazine.com/article/101-best-websites-2016

I have no affiliation with Family Tree Magazine and am sharing this solely
for the reader's information.

Will there be other Belarus sub-groups meeting at the IAJGS conference next
week? I plan to attend regardless, but would especially like to meet others
researching the same areas. Interests include Smargon, Gorodok (near Molodechno,
Volozhin, Dolginovo, Lehishin, Samokhvalovichi, etc.

Anyone visiting NARA NYC and/or Munipal Archives in the near future? #general

Naomi Leon <naomi.leon@...>

If anyone is planning a visit to NARA NYC or the NY Muncipal Archives
in the near future, I would be most grateful for a couple of look ups
(2 naturalisation petitions and a death certificate). I will of course
cover any costs and I'd be very happy to reciprocate the favour here in
the UK.

Best wishes,

Naomi Leon

Re: Bessarabia SIG at Seattle Conference, summer 2016 #bessarabia

Yefim Kogan

Dear friend,

I am very much excited to join many of our researchers in Seattle.

There are changes in the schedule of Bessarabian topics:
Unfortunately Amy Wachs cancelled her lecture: JEWISH LIFE IN THE REPUBLIC
OF MOLDOVA: PAST AND PRESENT (Thursday, August 11 at 3:00 PM-4:15 PM).

Instead of it we will have an after film discussion.
The film ABSENT will be presented by writer and director Matthew Mishory at
our Bessarabia SIG Meeting >from 11:45-1:15pm. (Film is 72 minutes long!).

In July 1941, the village was the site of an unimaginable atrocity.
Seventy-four years later, few speak clearly or honestly about what happened.
ABSENT is a cinematic portrait of the ghost village of Marculesti, its
current inhabitants, and their very complex relationship to their own
history. Working entirely on location, writer/director Matthew Mishory
documents one of Europe's poorest, most remote, and least-visited places.
Produced by Sabin Dorohoi, Edward Singletary, Jr., and Randall Walk. A
Romania-Switzerland-US co-production.
This film helps us to understand why we need to preserve our Jewish Heritage
in Bessarabia, why we need to photograph tombstones, cleanup the cemeteries.
For more information about the film, preview, press material, screening,
please see: http://www.iconoclasticmedia.com/absent/

The after film discussion will take place at 3:00-4:15pm, Thursday August 11
at Spruce Room. You will not find it in the program, because it is a last
minute change. Please make a note of it. We also going to talk about
Cemetery Restoration, the theme which is very much related to the film
ABSENT.

See you soon at the conference in Seattle http://www.iajgs2016.org/.

The list of presentations may be viewed at our Bessarabia SIG websites at
http://www.jewishgen.org/Bessarabia/Conferences.html
