Searching for information for Galician Rabbis surname Lowin. #galicia

John Lowin

My  paternal great grandfather, Maier Lowin Ordewer 1853, Radziechow district of Ternopol, Austria-Hungary, was one of 12 sons. The eleven other brothers all became rabbis. I am looking for information on the siblings of my great grandfather Meyer Lowin born in Radziechow, Galicia in 1853.  All 11 brothers became rabbis and spread out over Galicia.  I believe they attended the Yeshiva in Lwow.  I am specifically interested in lists of students at the Lwow Yeshiva and other nearby yeshivas where the brothers may have studied.  I am also interested in any stories of a Rabbi Lowin in any town in Galicia. I have looked at the Jewishgen Rabbis site and it has both Radziechow and Pzemysl, and the name Lewin.

Thank you.

Best Regards,

John Lowin

(US-NYC) Update on NYC Municipal Archives Proposed Regulation on Access #announcements #records #usa

Jan Meisels Allen

PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH YOUR  READERS AND SOCIETY MEMBERS

In 24 hours we have gotten the attention of  the NYC Department of Records & Information Services (DORIS) known to us as the Municipal Archives.  “…heard the positive news that DORIS does not

"necessarily" intend to charge license fees for using genealogy records. DORIS recognizes the proposed changes are unclear and has indicated some clarifications will be made before the final rule

is published. BUT...there is no guarantee that we will be consulted in advance on the FINAL RULE. Your comments are still NEEDED by October 23 as it still is not clear if personal usage of a vital

record certificate is  still at risk beyond the purchase and use by one person.”

The devil is in the details and we have not seen the changes in the proposed rule. Plus, it is VERY unique for an agency which proposes a rule to change the wording before a hearing,

and whether that is considered “legal” or only the wording in the actual proposed rule at this point is  unknown.

The latest is posted by the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYG&B) and can be read at:

https://www.facebook.com/nyfamilyhistory/posts/3392122924143166

You do not have to be a subscriber to Facebook to access the post.

This is the wording of the post:

IMPORTANT UPDATEWow! What an impact many of you have made in just 24 hoursBUT WE NEED EVERYONE'S COMMENTS IN THE PUBLIC RECORD by October 23.

In response to your initial comments, we heard the positive news that DORIS does not "necessarily" intend to charge license fees for using genealogy records. DORIS recognizes the

proposed changes are unclear and has indicated some clarifications will be made before the final rule is published. BUT...there is no guarantee that we will be consulted in advance on the FINAL RULE.

While the application of licensing fees may not apply to vital records, it is not clear if personal usage of a vital record certificate is still at risk beyond the purchase and use of the certificate by one person.

As written, the rules limit individual use of these records, "Reproductions are provided for the researcher's personal use only. Reproductions may not be reduplicated, published, or transferred to another individual or institution."

We still need to consider that we do not know what we will find in the final rule before publication. This is also about the wider licensing wording, e.g. "permission to use", and the restrictive language

and fees that apply to other "archival sources" which are public records at MUNI.  As written, the rules still require a license for educational, scholarly, non-profit, and media use.

Clarification is needed here: genealogists are educators and scholars!

We are anxious to see in writing, clarifications DORIS intends to make.

The hearing date is fixed as October 23please continue to inform others and ask everyone to act by learning more at https://www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org/access-alert.

Please be active on this issue---we can’t be silent!

To access the previous  postings on the IAJGS Records Access Alert about the NYC DORIS/Municipal Archives go to the archives of the IAJGS Records Access Alert at:  http://lists.iajgs.org/mailman/private/records-access-alerts/.

You must be registered to access the archives.  To register go to: http://lists.iajgs.org/mailman/listinfo/records-access-alerts  and follow the instructions to enter your email address, full name and which genealogical  organization

Viewmate #86851 - who is this man #translation

Paul Silverstone

I've posted a vital record in Polish for which I need a translation. It
is on ViewMate at the following address ...
https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM86851
Please respond via the form provided on the ViewMate image page.
Thank you very much.

I am trying to find out who is the man in this picture. The original
picture came with a group of photos of my father's parents' family, so I
believe that is where he belongs.
His surname name may be SILBERSTEIN, or CHRZAN. The family lived in
Makow Mazowiecki or Pultusk in Poland, north of Warsaw. I believe this
is a 19th century photo, and it appears to be retouched.
if anyone recognizes him please let me know!

Re: Where can I find the birth certificate of someone who was born in a DP camp (Benzheim)? #records #holocaust

Lewis, Megan

The DP camp records in the Arolsen Archives contain some birth certificates or other documentation of births.  If you do not find these documents on the Arolsen Archive's website I suggest your cousins submit a research request to them or the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

I agree with the suggestion that they contact the registry offices in Benzheim.

Best wishes,

Megan Lewis

Origin of girl's name "Seiva" #names #romania #yiddish

Aline Petzold

Hello:
The name  "Seiva"(Scharf ) is listed on Ancestry.com as the mother of a family friend whose letter I found while researching family letters. The letter in question was written from Botosani, but the writer's relatives and my grandparents both lived Stefanesti Romania and immigrated to Montreal before WW2.  I am wondering if anyone has seen the name "Seiva" before, whether is is Yiddish, Romanian or Hebrew and also what the English equivalent of the name might be?  BTW: the writer's father is listed as "Moise" and I have found a newspaper reference to a "Morris" (Scharf) who lived in Montreal during that time.

I might add that Mayor DeBlasio is on WNYC New York Public Radio every Friday morning. Perhaps someone can call in to the question-and-answer radio show (Brian Lehrer show) and pose this egregious violation of copyright law questionto Hizzoner.

Please excuse the Speech to typing mistake. My grandmother’s maiden name was Jaffe or Jaffa. Her father’s name was Samuel Jaffe and her mother was Bessie Kaplan. My grandmother had sisters Jenny, Mary, Rose and Cecelia Jaffe.

I am curious to learn more about their life in Chernigov  and if anyone was familiar with this family.
Thank you.

My husband, whose parents were in the Lampertheim (Germany) DP Camp, was born in the local hospital (a Catholic hospital). His birth
certificate was issued by the hospital.

In the case I investigated, a child who was born while the parents were living in Föhrenwald DP in Wolfratshausen, (West) Germany, the mother actually traveled to Munich to give birth, and the birth was registered there, in the regular civil register, and cross-registered in Wolfratshausen. I would check the municipal register in the town where the camp was located, and/or the nearest city with a hospital.
