Re: tracing American relatives #usa

R Jaffer

Many of the people looking for relatives in the U.S. did not know in which state the relatives were living. Therefore, the agencies ran many of the ads in multiple newspapers. You should search the Seeking Kin database referenced by David Rosen even if you think the relatives sought were living in a state other than Massachusetts.

If you are a member of a genealogical society in the U.S. and would like to have your members extract the data from your local Jewish newspaper for inclusion in the database, please contact me for more info.

HOROWITZ family in Sochaczew #poland #rabbinic

I am looking for info on Rabbi/mohel Joseph HOROWITZ of Sochaczew. I think he would have been born in the late 1820's or early 1830's. He married Ester Leah in 1855 and had 3 daughters.

Looking for information about my family from Yedenitz #bessarabia

I am trying to find information about my family from Bessarabia (Yedenitz).  My great-grandfather was Charles (Chaskel) Perlman. He was a rabbi.   He married Nechomo Mekler (Mackler or Meckler), my great-grandmother.  She died in Bessarabia before my great-grandfather came to the US around 1899 with five children including my grandmother who was about 5.  My grandmother had said that she was the youngest of 10 children.  We don't have any idea if those children were alive and stayed in Bessarabia or what.   My great-grandmother (Nechomo) had a brother, Boroch, a sister Sima, and another sister Rebecca who all came to the US, also around1898-1901.  I don't know if those were all her siblings or if more were in Bessarabia.   In the 1910 census of  Sima and family it listed Jennie Meckler as the mother and she came to the US and was a widow.
I am at a road block with the information in the United States and would love to figure out how I can find anything from Yedenitz.  I also don't know anything about my great-grandfather and the Perlman family in Bessarabia.  I read the discussions and would love to have my blurb posted so maybe I could get some direction on what to do.
Thank you for your consideration.  Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Terry Manassee
great-granddaughter of Nechomo (Mekler, Mackler or Meckler) and Charles (Chaskel) Perlman.

A cousin of mine, Shapsie in Yiddish, became Sidney in English. But it could be anything; Sam was popular.

You just reminded me...  My dad Sidney's "alternate" name was indeed Shepsel, but he was also called Shep or Shepsy. Only his siblings and very close acquaintances (friendships made in childhood) used these names. To everyone else, including me, he was Sidney. Thank you, Abe!

Yizkor Books #yizkorbooks #poland

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this venue and so am hoping that someone can help me. I participated in the talk yesterday given by Avraham Groll (very informative) and just learned about Yizkor books. My family was mostly wiped out in the Holocaust and so I didn't have hardly any information about any ancestors beyond the names of my grandparents who were killed. My ancestors came from Kolomyya and Drohobycz in Galicia, Poland and I found Yizkor books on those towns. The one from Kolomyya has a table of contents that I can see but I cannot read anything that is included in the book, nor find any information about where else to find any. I tried to contact the "contact" person written on the front page of the book in the JewishGen website and have not received any response. In fact I have contacted multiple people via the JewishGen website who are listed as contacts regarding specifically possible family members and have never received any response.
Does anyone have any information about any of my topics above who can help?
Thank you,

Who Was Cudek APOTHEKER from Krakow # galicia #general

Abuwasta Abuwasta

I found Cudek APOTHEKER on the business directory of Krakow in 1913. I believe he is member of my wife's family, several of whom I found on several Krakow addresses directories as from 1890 onward.

But Cudek may be another form of Tzudik and I found on the FTJP a certain Charles Tzudik APOTHEKER, born in Kishunev in 1855 to Moshe Mayer APOTHEKER  who was the son of Tzudik APOTHEKER.

Since his name is Charles I assume that at a certain stage he settled in an English speaking country. Based of what I know about the APOTHEKERs, some of them related to the Landau and Horowiztz

Rabbinical dynasties the fact that he was born as far as Kishinev does not "frighten" me.

I wonder whether anyone can shed some more light  on it?

Re: Why the name "Sylvester"? #names

EdrieAnne Broughton

The name Sylvester is a Latin origin name meaning 'wooded' or 'wild' without a Christian origin which made it acceptable to languages short on neutral religious origin given names.

Trying to confirm marriage - SHAPIRO and ELSNER #belarus #austria-czech

Paul Shapiro

I'm trying to confirm the marriage between my Great Aunt Anna (Annie, Channa) SHAPIRO to Adolph ELSNER.  I'm unable to find this marriage in any searches and unfortunately, I forget where I even made the connection.

Some additional facts.  In my searches, I've found that both Anna and Adolph were born round 1893, Anna arrived in the US in 1913 and Adolph in 1910.  I believe Anna is from Grodno, Russia, and Adolph from Austria

Finally, I'm searching for the following families; I've had very little success going past their US information.

Thank you
Paul Shapiro

Thank you all for your responses. They give me some information and context. I do not have any passports of my ancestors so I am also looking for any archive in Ukraine or Poland that might have files of applications. Any suggestions?

Seeking Information About Grandmother’s Father and his ABRAMOWITZ Family. #hungary #romania

Sally Horn

Seeking Information About Grandmother’s Father and his ABRAMOWITZ Family.  My grandmother, Sura/Sarah Leah ABROMOWITZ KNEPLER was born around 1888 in Bivolari and emigrated to the United States in 1909 with her husband Gerson /George KNEPLER.  Her father (Avraham Halevi ABRAMOWITZ), mother (MAIDEN SURNAME UNKNOWN), and two sisters (NAMES UNKNOWN) remained in Romania, most likely in Bivolari.  My late mother’s memoir states that Sura's father owned what my mother described as a “large department store,” was robbed repeatedly by the Russians, was ill when my grandmother left Romania, and died sometime after my grandmother arrived in the United States.  It also states that Sura's mother also was ill when my grandmother left Romania and died sometime after my grandmother left Romania.  And, it states that after Sura left Romanian, one of her sisters was murdered by the Russians while hanging clothes outside.  I have no information about the other sister.   A late aunt told a cousin that she remembers hearing about family living in Cluj. If anyone has any information about my GGF and his ABRAMOWITZ family, I would be grateful to hear from you. #romania, #hungary

My great great uncle, from Suwalki (who emigrated to Sheffield) was named Shepsel Bloch. Shepsel means lamb, but I don't know an equivalent English name.
