Re: Poland/Russia town help

Hi to Vivs Laliberte (and everyone else who will read this).
I don't think I've seen anyone try to read the wife's birthplace -- which looks to me like "Pashika, Poland, Russia". The JewishGen Gazetteer -- here: https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocTown.asp -- lists rather-more-than-one place name in Eastern Europe from a phonetic search for "Pashika". I (myself) would have guessed the most-likely candidate to be a "Pasika" (other names/spellings given are "Kishkhidveg" (from Hungarian?) and "Paseka" -- but that place (now in Ukraine) seems to be hundreds of miles (and more kilometers from Slutsk; I see listed in Belarus (Slutsk is in Belarus) 3 different "Paseka"s, 1 "Paseki", and 1 "Pasiki" [Shrug}. I don't really know Belarus geography (and am barely better about Eastern European geography more-generally) -- but maybe someone here could figure out which near-"Pashika" would have been closes to Slutsk (or otherwise provide an opinion about where the wife's "Pashika" would have been? Good Luck to you, Vivs Laliberte. Ethan Kent -- in New York City.

I believe my great grandmother, Sheindel WEISEL is referenced in this ship manifest on row 6. Even though the country is listed as 'Russland', I think she was from what was known as Galicia Austria at the time ( 1889)., now part of the Ukraine. The name of the city in column 5, where she had lived, is where I am stuck. Perhaps someone can help. Thanks in advance .

https://www.jewishgen.org/ Please respond via the form provided on the ViewMate image page. For years, I have believed (with published supporting data) that this couple were my paternal great-grandparents - the original precursors of the GELBFISZ, FISH, GOLDFISH, GOLDWYN line in North America. But recently indexed new data is starting to put that into question.
So the more information I can get the better.
Thank you very, very much!

Jan Meisels Allen
While this is something posted on the IAJGS Records Access Alert with so many people worldwide interested in New York City records I thought it also appropriate to post on this forum. For those who are already subscribed to the Records Access Alert my apologies for duplication. For those who believe access to records of genealogical value are important you are invited to subscribe-its free- see at bottom how to subscribe.
Jan Meisels Allen Chairperson, IAJGS Public Records Access Monitoring Committee
The New York City Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS) (this includes the Municipal Archives) has proposed new rules with an increase in fees for records, photographs, videos, and access requirements –some of which are detrimental to genealogists-such as not being able to share any of the information with anyone. The notice of the proposed rule and hearing may be found at: https://rules.cityofnewyork.us/content/amendment-rules-relating-municipal-archives-and-municipal-reference-library. You may download the pdf of the proposed rule from this site and it is attached to this announcement for you convenience.
When reading the proposed rule please not that information in brackets [ ] is deleted and that which is newly proposed is underlined _____.
A public hearing is scheduled for Friday October 23, 2020 at 11:00AM Eastern Time. Deadline for submitting comments is also October 23, 2020—see below on how to submit your statement. Information on how to participate by video conference or telephone is: Internet Video and Audio. To participate in the public hearing, enter the Webex URL: https://nycdoris.webex.com/nycdoris/j.php?MTID=mefc0048fb1822df1ceebde18 (copy and paste if it does not click)
If prompted to provide a password or number, please enter the following: Meeting Number: 173 225 7395. Password: kjEZGpCu746 • Telephone. To access the hearing by telephone, dial +1-646-992-2010 United States Toll (New York City) or 1-408-418-9388 United States Toll. • Access code: 173 225 7395
You can submit comments several ways: • Website. You can submit comments to the Department of Records & Information Services through the NYC rules website at: http://rules.cityofnewyork.us. • Email. You can email comments to DORISrules@... • Mail. You can mail comments to: Assistant Commissioner Kenneth R. Cobb, Department of Records & Information Services, 31 Chambers Street, Suite 305, New York, N.Y. 10007. • Fax. You can fax comments to Department of Records & Information Services, 212 788-8625. • By speaking at the hearing. Anyone who wants to comment on the proposed rule at the public hearing may speak for up to three minutes. Please access the public hearing by Internet Video and Audio or by Telephone using the instructions above. It is recommended, but not required, that anyone who wants to comment sign up prior to the hearing by emailing Gerald Rosero at: grosero@...
Some of the increased fees include:
The proposed rules also state: Section 3-01 Municipal Archives and Library Regulations Governing Use of Archives and Library Materials: Section A: Access to Materials All researchers must complete a registration form with name, contact information, affiliation if any, and specifying research subject and purpose and provide acceptable identification upon request. Physical condition of any item may prohibit public access. Certain records may be subject to redaction and other restrictive access related to personal privacy, health information and minors. The special restrictions also apply to District Attorney case files, Board of Education “anti-Communist” case files, World Trade Center materials and Police Department surveillance records and photographs. Other restrictions are listed in the proposed rule.
Section B: Reproductions are provided for the researcher's personal use only. Reproductions may not be reduplicated, published, or transferred to another individual or institution.
Permission to publish, reprint, broadcast, reduplicate or make other use of Archives or Library materials are subject to the conditions in a Publish./Use form and observance of the US Copyright Code. Violation of any of the rules may be cause for future access to the Municipal Library and Archives.
Thank you to Chuck Weinstein, JGS Long Island, for sharing the proposed rule with us.
It was in 2018 that the NYC Municipal Archives changed the access as to whom may obtain records and the embargo dates. A VERY strong genealogical community fought back. While they went ahead with the embargo period, we were successful in getting additional family members to be included in those who could get immediate access. The genealogical community needs to again work cooperatively to get many of the above proposed rules amended before they are adopted.
To access the previous postings on the IAJGS Records Access Alert about the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene go to the archives of the IAJGS Records Access Alert at: http://lists.iajgs.org/mailman/private/records-access-alerts/. You must be registered to access the archives. To register go to: http://lists.iajgs.org/mailman/listinfo/records-access-alerts and follow the instructions to enter your email address, full name and which genealogical organization with whom you are affiliated You will receive an email response that you have to reply to or the subscription will not be finalized.

I am seeking the birth record of my paternal grandmother, Ernestina/Esther/Ester STECKMAN, and/or her five siblings: Sime/Sune/Sadie STEKMANN, Celia STECKMAN, Schemdel/Jenny/Jennie STECHMANN, Leon STECKMAN, and Chaim/Hyman Itzik STECKMAN. Their parents were Josel/Josef STEKMANN and Brana/Brono BECKER. According to the JRI-Poland database for Tarnopol Wojewodztwo, Josel Stekmann was born on 1/1865 in the town of Husiatyn, Galicia, Austria. Mark Halpern, JRI-Poland's eastern Galicia area coordinator, told me that the Husiatyn Jewish vital records past 1876 have not survived. My paternal grandmother Ernestina STECKMAN left Rotterdam on 10/7/1911, arriving at Port of NY on 10/16/1911 on the SS Ryndam. The ship's manifest lists her birthplace and last place of residence as Liczkowce, Husiatyn district, Galicia, Austria, which is now called Lychkivtsi, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. Since my paternal grandmother was likely born in Liczkowce, Galicia, Austria, JRI-Poland's eastern Galicia area coordinator Mark Halpern suggested I look at other Husiatyn community records that are not being indexed. He provided the below information from Miriam Weiner's Routes to Roots archival holdings database. Mr. Halpern suggested that some of my ancestors' birth records might be included in the below notary records because sometimes notary records include vital records submitted by the subject of the notary record.
Based on Mr. Halpern's suggestion, I emailed the State Archives of Ternopol Oblast at archive_te@..., requesting guidance on how to access the Notary Records in Fond 61, 86-87. I received the following response, " Good day. In order to provide you with information, please submit to us request of the established sample which is placed on our website in a heading citizens' appeal. Requests are processed within 30 days. Those queries that require more review of cases are performed up to 45 days. Payment and invoice are issued after the request. Please send confirmation of the receipt of the letter!!" Is communicating/dealing with the Ternopol Archives the only way for me to access the Notary Records for Gusyatin? If so, can anyone provide clear guidance on how I proceed from here? Or does Miriam Weiner's Routes to Roots have these notary records online somewhere? If yes, where do I find them? I am stumped. Thank you for any advice you can provide! I've posted four pages of a letter my mother recently found from my grandfather's relatives in Russia to him from 1973. The letter is written in Yiddish and I'd like to have it translated to English.
There was Russian on the envelope and I was able to muddle through that translation my self. (It was my great aunt's name and address in Moscow.) I'd appreciate a translation! I too am trying to research my Ukrainian family, Rabinovich or Rabinowich who originated in Ruzhyn, Ukraine. Are there records available and any suggestions as to the best place to search? Shulim Rabinovitz, son of Yisrael, married to Matle. Matle's name shows as Indick, but I doubt that is her original surname. All the children show Rishin, now Ruzhyn as their birthplace.
Bonnie Gould Calabasas, Ca. Researching: Rabinovitz(wich) from Ruzhyn,Ukraine; Peker/Pekier from Kapyl, Belarus; Perlin from Timkovichi, Belarus; Altman from Warsaw, Poland Siegel from Taurage, Lithuania; Heyman/Hemanow from Riga, Latvia; Justman from Warsaw, Poland; Gold/Golod from Moyzr, Belarus;

Sorry to disagree with everyone but you might want to check this article in NYT about GED Match. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/01/technology/gedmatch-breach-privacy.html .They bought out the founding company in December and then proceeded to release info of abt a million people to law enforcement without users permission.
