Need help, please, dating a Warsaw and a Liverpool studio photo of my great-grandmother #poland #unitedkingdom #photographs

Barry Clarke

I have two undated formal studio photos of my great-grandmother, one taken in Warsaw and one in Liverpool. I am struggling to make sense of them from the age she looks in them vis a vis when I understood her to have been in Poland and in the UK. I need some outside opinions as to which years each photo may have been taken. Maybe someone can judge by the clothes she is wearing? She was born 1862/1863. I have attached the photos, but I don't know how they will appear in this format, so please email me at bbclarke98@... if you need to see a full-size attachment, and I will email it to you.

Thank you,

This marriage was concluded with the joint approval of the parents, while the newlyweds declared that they had not entered into a prenuptial agreement between themselves. This act, after being read in the presence of the rabbi, was read and signed by witnesses, with the exception of the bride, groom and their parents, who announced that they could not write.

Re: Records for Aliens Held for Special Inquiry - 305-Cert #general #usa

Susan&David

Cert 305 is, most likely, related to the requirement to have a bond of financial support from a friend or family member if the immigrant was denied admission for LPC (Likely Public Charge)   Abraham was held for tn days before the issue was resolved in his favor.

This is from:  https://www.uscis.gov/about-us/our-history/history-office-and-library/our-history/public-charge-provisions-of-immigration-law-a-brief-historical-background#_ftnref21

"Aliens held as inadmissible by the BSI could appeal the decision to Immigration Service Headquarters. A majority of immigrants who appealed the BSI decision were admitted on appeal. In many of these cases the Immigration Service required a bond of financial support from  a friend or family member as a condition of admission."

Re: Lacova in Lithuania #lithuania

Hi Jeremy

There are several places called Lubove or Lubowe in 1) the parts of Suwalki gubernia in NE Poland that went into Lithuania in 1919 - in I think the Kalvaria or Marijampole areas that are adjacent to Kovno and 2) near Augustow on the Augustow canal, which is in the present day Suwalki gubernia area but close to Kovno.  I think the name has something to do with oak trees.

I visited the Augustow Lebowe in 2000, hoping to find out which Lebowe my great aunt's husband came from, this or the other one.  I still do not know as it is a common place name in the area.

Janowiec, Poland - researching the CUKIER family #poland

Daniella Alyagon

I am researching the  CUKIER family from Janowiec.
Using Geneteka I have managed to identify some early 1820's records in church books, however, I am having some problems with the post 1826 records as the JRI-Poland indexation provides very little information and my Polish reading abilities are not sufficient in order to find my way through 236 records identified only by the name of the person without any information on parentage or age.

I was wandering if there is any additional information for Janowiec which is not online.

In addition when looking for early records (c. 1820’s) on JRI-Poland, I have noticed that the index includes solely names without parents.  Is there a full extraction project on going?

Is there a book of residents for Janowiec?

Thank you,
Daniella Alyagon

Dear Group

I wondered if the JewishGen subscribers may be interested in reading my brother Melbourne writer, Leon Silver’s latest book published by Simon & Schuster titled, ‘The Miracle Typist’. It’s a true story of Leon’s father-in-law Tolek Klings, who was conscripted into the Polish army in the Second World War. However, the army is rife with anti-Semitism and Tolek is relentlessly tormented. What follows is an extraordinary odyssey that will take Tolek – via a daring escape from a Hungarian internment camp – to Palestine where his ability to touch-type earns him the title of ‘The Miracle Typist’, then on to fight in Egypt, Tobruk and Italy.

Lacova in Lithuania #lithuania

jeremy_bloom@...

Hello,
I am researching the Glass/Glas/Glaz family in Lithuania and have found information in Dublin's Jewish Museum that they originally came from a place called Lacova in Kovno Gubernia.  A place with this name doesn't exist and I am unable to find any historical record of it.  I assume that it is probably a misspelling of a name passed on orally and there are a could of candidates in the Northern part of the country.

I wondered if anyone on here had come across the name Lacova or had any idea which place it refers to please?

Many thanks in advance

Re: Ukmerge/ Vilkomir , Lithuania birth records #lithuania #records

Bella Tseytlin

Russ,
talking about Vilkomir/Ukmerge - my late gma, Alta Bak, was born in 1893 in Utena. So far I couldn’t  find any records of her existence (except obd memorial, where she was listed as next of kin for her missing in action young son) . It’s especially difficult as Alta may not be the name given at birth.

In your opinion, can I get anything from Kaunas Archives  if, in one of the Revision Lists for (supposedly) Alta’s family I’ve come across a girl (Leah Iudes  Bak) which more or less fits information re: my Gma?

Unfortunately, neither JewishGen, nor Ancestry has anything else on this person.

Or there is no hope to get any additional information?

To Susie Adani, I’m So sorry to get into your post...

Many Thanks to both,

Bella Tseytlin.

Gary, many thanks for addressing above issues!

As we know Alex Krakovsky  continuously adding new records to Jewish Schtetles - be it in various FB groups,
j-roots Russian Forum and on his  Wiki list.

I’m not Technology savvy person, hence is my question:
Do you have suggestion/s how to sort out particular region (or the whole list) in Chronological order? I’m asking, as until File is open, there is No way to see when File has been added to the Jewish  Mestechko.

Many thanks.

Struggling to find a birth certificate - my own! Silesia 1946 #poland

Nomi Waksberg

My mother was repatriated from the Soviet Union in 1946. (That is documented). She
registered with the Central Committee of Polish Jews and her address post the war
was Klodzko.
PSA doesn't have any records for my birth in Klodzko.
My mother told me I was born in a convent - near the train station. My dear Polish
friend thought this might be Bardo and they did confirm that many Jewish children were
born there, but didn't have any information about records.
I realize these times of post war transition were especially traumatic in this region of
Silesia.
Does anyone know if the Jewish Committee in Wroclaw maintained records?
Was there a required procedure by the Catholic Church to document births and
send this information somewhere for civil records?
Thanks in advance for any leads on this.
Nomi Waksberg

Re: Missing information in mazeva in Warsaw's cemetery #warsaw #general

Madeleine Isenberg

Yoel,

Despite not having all the tools I normally have (desktop in the shop) I think I can see quite a bit here.

At the top, on the curve is a Hebrew date, and to the best of my ability, it looks like 18 Adar2 5643 (= 27 March 1883).  The last letter of the year is a bit difficult to read, so I hope this is right.

A few rows down, I believe I see the name Shraga Aharon (maybe) Leib (maybe), who died at an old age.
Further down, I am assuming the father's name here was Mordechai.

Perhaps these pieces of information help you, but it's the best I can do at this time.

Regards,

YIVO Online Exhibit Tells Stories of Jewish Life Before the Nazis #holocaust #lithuania

Jan Meisels Allen

In August, I posted about YIVO’s first online exhibit featuring the life of Beba Epstein, a young girl born in Vilna, Poland now Vilnius, Lithuania in 1922. The exhibit is called, Beba Epstein: The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Girl . To enter the exhibit go to:  https://museum.yivo.org/experiences/introduction/   Beba survived three concentration and labor camps, moved to America and had a career as a social worker for Jewish Family Services helping Soviet-Jewish immigrants to settle in California, Beba died in 2012.

The New York Times has written a story about the exhibit. Not only does one learn about Beba and the Jews of Vilnius, but also about the schools, where Jews went in the summertime. The exhibit has over 200 artifacts-photographs, film clips, maps. School notebooks and more.
