Rita Lieger has accepted the role of Volunteer Coordinator for Jewishgen Romania Research. My Co-Director, Michael Moritz, and I are very pleased to welcome this valuable member of our team. Rita will be available to find a satisfying role for people wishing to help us get our many records onto Jewishgen. She’ll help us reconnect with volunteers who may have worked for the RomSIG years ago, and find people with skills to help us in other needed ways. Rita Liegner has been immersed in and captivated by genealogical research as a hobby for the past 10 years. Before her recent retirement, she was an executive for a non-profit behavioral health and social service organization, involved in management, program and staff development, and organizational change. She has also worked as a university student services program director. She holds an M.S.Ed and B.A. from the City University of New York and is a licensed mental health counselor in New York State. Rita was born in the Bronx and has lived in the New York City area all her life.

Hello all,
I found a link to this very helpful article written by Ann Rabinowitz back in 2008: https://www.litvaksig.org/information-and-tools/online-journal/jewish-household-heirlooms
She called it "glassele te", in which a dollop of jam is added to black tea. The practice appears to have originated in Russia. I think Prof Miller’s mother was meeting with the other woman for some reason not disclosed, and she prepared the special tea possibly as a show of respect or care.

My grandpa Richard V. Gilbert born in 1902 who lived in Philadelphia remembered his uncles and other relatives sitting around the kitchen table drinking tea from samovars and arguing radical politics. They had glass cups in metal handled holders as you may find in Turkish restaurants today. Sugar was sold in large loaves and small pieces were broken off. People held the pieces between their teeth/lips and drank the tea through them. This was during the 1910s into 1920s.

I have never heard of this a special ceremony , but maybe it was a special ceremony only in Julius's family . It might have been special because making these jams was labor intensive and seasonal . As someone below has said Russians often take preserves in their tea . Another respondent referred to the custom of putting a sugar cube between the teeth and drinking the tea through the sugar cube. When I asked my Russian relatives who emigrated from the USSR in 1992 about this custom , they said they had never heard of it.

My maternal gmother Mera Levinson was born in Lepel, Belarus in 1881. On Yad Vashem there is a page of testimony for Nahum Levinson (born about 1876) from Lepel subbmited by Dola Lyandres (Levinson), Nahum's granddaughter. In 1999 she lived on Zahal Street in Nesher, Israel. However, now I cant find Dola or any of her relatives. Can anybody help me or advise how to find Dola Lyandres.

VISA and Registry Files: USCIS information

Dear Group,
The USCIS form G-1041-A allows for requests of five items. I understand the first three; the A-File, the C-File and the AR-File. And, I have those numbers from the U.S. Naturalization Records Indexes, 1794-1995 at Ancestry.com However, the form G-1041-A also allows for requests for VISA Files (1924-1944) and Registry Files (1929-1944). Where do you get these numbers from? Will an Index Search Request always provide all five index numbers? Is there another way to find or obtain the VISA and Registry numbers? For instance, on my grandmothers Certificate of Arrival (attached), there are a bunch of numbers. Are any of those the VISA or Registry? I'm doing research on the Jewish community of Warta (pronounced: vahr-tah, in Polish; Dvort, in Yiddish), Poland, with a particular focus on the old Jewish cemetery. I'd like to learn more about the Rozenwald family. One brother, Ezre, was among the 10 Jewish men publicly hanged in 1942. Another brother, Mordecai, was killed in December, 1945. Another brother, Meir Laub, appears to have survived the war. He was a barber, and his barbershop was in the old market square, in the center of town. A number of years ago, apparently his son from the U.S. visited the barbershop, now operated by a Polish barber. The last name possibly has been anglicized -- maybe now Rosenvald?

seeking birth record from Szolnok, Hungary

Mia L. was born in Israel and wants to get married. Her parents were married in a synagogue in Budapest before making Aliah. This marriage is not recognized in Israel. So Mia needs a few papers to proof she is Jewish….
Looks like Mia’s mother was not inscribed in the Jewish congregation in Budapest. So we need to obtain Mia’s grandmother’s birth record.
Marta BALÁZS (aka BLEIER) was born in 1927 in Szolnok, Hungary. I understand that, because of the privacy rule, these records are not available to the public.
I would greatly appreciate advice on how to obtain this birth record.

Seeking a Yad Vashem testimony submitter.

In 2004, a woman by the name Irina (nee Giterman) Taran, who gave her address in Kiev, at 42 Gogolevskaya Street, submitted eight pages of testimony for member of a Chak family, all murdered in then Chervonoarmeisk, now Pulin, in the Zhitomir region. She would be 90-95 y.o. today. If anybody knows her or her family members, I'd appreciate hearing from them as our families might be related.

I have a group of Storch members in my Ancestry Public Tree titled "ArostStaub_2019". I was told of them by my late in-laws, Anna Fichtner/Fischman Staub and Leo Staub. I'm not sure how they were related, but it might give you a jumping off point.

I beg to disagree You are correct that the municipality is called Lytham St Annes but the municipality is a combination of two villages, Lytham and St Annes which maintain their separate identities. Lytham was the original village, St Annes (properly St Annes-on-Sea) was a 19th century planned development next door Michael Sharp Manchester

Israel Film Archive has thousands of hours to film to watch many of which are free. The website is currently during its trial run. Since 1960, the Jerusalem Cinematheque’s Israeli Film Archive has been in charge of the safekeeping and preservation of original Israeli narrative and documentary film works – from the late 19th century until present-day.
Some of the films to have been restored thus far include Three Days and a Child (1967), Avanti Popolo (1986), Siege (1969), and Life According to Agfa (1992).
The Israeli Film Archive is home to hundreds of film collections which chronicle the land’s history, practically from as far back as the advent of the movie camera. These collections are comprised of feature-length fiction films, documentaries, newsreels, student films, public service ads, art films, home movies, and lots more. The total length of all rolls of film adds up to a whopping two million meters. Stored with them in the archives are also tens of thousands of professional videotapes, and roughly 1.5million gigabytes of digital media.
In 2020 alone, the archive welcomed 800 new additions of both old and new titles to its catalogue.
