Re: Help with Brick Wall -- tracing Isaac Greenblat #russia #poland

Jill Whitehead

Have you looked at spelling variations on the name Greenblat and Grinblat? My great grandmother Rachel Grymblat (sic) was born in Suwalki in NE Poland in c1840 and came to Manchester, UK with her husband  Chackiel Ceglarski (changed his name to Nathan Abrahams, later Abrams on arrival) in 1867/8. she died in Manchester in 1921. Her eldest son Abraham was born in Suwalki in 1867, but her other 8 children were born in Manchester, including my grandmother Hannah in 1876.

Hello apparently the National Archives will be reopening shortly. The Moscow Fund is interesting to find relatives that have had problems with the french authorities or were considered suspicious (communists/komintern, foreign agents, agitators....)

Identification of two Offenbach youth groups y #germany

sohail.husain@...

This is a rather obscure request! I am researching and writing the life stories of my mother, Karola GRÜNEBAUM, and her parents (Sophie and Friedrich), who lived in Offenbach am Main. She was born in 1921, attended the Jewish school when it opened in 1934, completed an apprenticeship at Alligator leather company and worked there until December 1938. She escaped to London in August 1939 but her parents were transported to Theresienstadt in 1942 and then to Auschwitz, never to return.

I am attaching two photographs from my mother’ album, which I believe were taken in Offenbach probably in the early 1930s. One shows a girls’ youth group in uniform and I would like to know if this is the uniform of Girl Guides (Pfadfinderinnen) or whether it is some other youth group.

The second shows a girls’ sports team in rather wet and muddy conditions. My first thought was that this could be a hockey team, but there are no hockey sticks, so I wonder if it could be a different sport. If anyone can shed light on this, I’d be grateful.

Of course, if anyone recognises the photos and can provide any other information, that would be fantastic.

Many thanks

Re: "Researchers" submitting Yad Vashem Pages of Testimony #holocaust #israel

nevet@...

The Yad Vashem victims' database is, unfortunately, a mess. There are so many redundant and questionable records that it's difficult to trust the information. Just yesterday I was looking for information on a person, and when I entered a last name I got 100+ records in addition to the one that I was hoping to find -- but there were only about 30 individuals represented in these records. I submitted over 20 reports of duplicate, triplicate, and quadruplicate entries. (And I classified myself as a "researcher" in each of these reports submitted, since I'm not related to any of these individuals.) The process is tedious, since the form must be submitted separately for each set of duplicate records, but I considered it worth doing in the interest of data integrity.

I received 20+ responses promptly, within less than 24 hours. Each message said, "As a result of your query we have connected the entries relating to the name you mentioned. Note that this will be visible in our online database only after the next update of the database which is updated every three months." -- Yup, less than a day to correct, but up to three months to make the updated records visible.

Re: Trouble finding relatives in Ellis Island Passenger Lists #records #names

Adelle Gloger

My late mother-in-law said that when she, 2 older brothers and father entered the USA around 1909  the name was HAMSHANSKY. That was the name she indicated on her naturalization papers was the name she entered the country with.  In the 1910 US Census they were listed as Hamshansky.  I could never find anything with that name.
I started saying the name with a heavy accent -- they were from Zlatapol. Finally, I found them and 2 older sisters, who had arrived earlier, on different passenger lists as Chramzenke / Chramzanka.
So.............you must be creative and think outside the box.  Next mystery was on the 1920 US Census the name was then ORCHEN.  Go figure.

Help with Brick Wall -- tracing Isaac Greenblat #russia #poland

Brian Blitz

I have been trying to trace the origins of my great-great-grandfather, Isaac GREENBLAT, but with little success, and would appreciate any help or pointers that anyone could give me.  What I know is that he was born on May 16 1860 (according to his gravestone), most likely in Russian Poland (Congress Poland) and died on October 19, 1906 in New York.  He came to the US around 1883 (per 1900 US census, although 1905 NY census has his arrival in 1885).  The birth certificates for two of his children list his birthplace as Russia Poland, which is where I infer Congress Poland.  Otherwise, his naturalization papers, death certificate, other children's birth certificates, 1900 census and 1905 census  list his birthplace/former citizenship as Russia/Emperor of Russia, but do not provide more details.  On one child's birth certificate, he was listed as Abraham Greenblat.

According to his New York death certificate, Isaac's parents were Adolf and Bertha Greenblat.  Isaac's father's name is not on his gravestone.  No one in my family knows much about him, including his living grandchildren, other than that he was a tailor.

I have not been able to locate a marriage certificate or immigration records for Isaac and his wife Amelia (Malka Sheindel) Langer (born in Krakow, died in NY in 1940).  Based on their census records, they were married before they came to the US, but I have no further proof.

I'd appreciate any help in finding Isaac's birthplace, brothers/sisters (if any), immigration manifest, etc.   Ideas, places to look, etc. are all much appreciated!

I did find a record for an Abram Icek Grinblat, born in 1860 in Lubin to Jankel and Feiga Rochma (https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/35/1753/0/2/77/str/0/68/1#tabSkany) but I have no idea if that is the same person.

Thank you very much.

A New Database on Jewish Collections Looted by the Nazis #announcements #holocaust

Jan Meisels Allen

The Jewish Digital Cultural Recovery Project (JDCRP) plans to provide a comprehensive registry of all Jewish collections looted by the Nazi.,  They are beginning with a pilot project on Old Masters seized by the Nazis, which was owned by Adolphe Schloss.  Schloss had a collection of Old Dutch Masters seized by the Gestapo from a French chateau- but one-third of the collection is still missing.

The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany and the Commission for Art Recovery initiated the Jewish Digital Cultural Recovery Project. They received   €490,000 from the European Union’s Creative Europe program. In addition to listing both missing and recovered art, it will explore the looting networks and the trade and digitize thousands of documents and photographs from archives.

While there are other databases on looted art, the JDCRP is different as it takes Jewish collections  as its starting-point and using an event-based approach to trace the route the objects took.

The project plans to have an initial mock-up online at the end of June 2021.
