What would be a full set of naturalization records in NYC from the 1850's? #records

dmjacobs@...

I have been able to find the Declaration of intent (19 April 1850) and Oath (2 July 1843) as components of the naturalization record of my 2nd great grandfather Charles Schiff.  They correspond to the records referenced in the index to naturalization records - dates, bundle number and record number – all on Ancestry.  Neither the index card nor the records contain the port of arrival or date of arrival.  Is it likely that there are any other naturalization records that would give me any more information?  The Court was the Superior Court of New York County; would other paper records still be in an archive someplace? (Assuming we can travel someday!) (And I have been unable to find any manifest with his name for the period before 1846 when his first son was born in NY.)

HTML - looking for volunteers to help on Yizkor Books Project #yizkorbooks

Joel Alpert

I am looking for help for the Yizkor Books Project to work on placing
material on the web. Lance Ackerfeld calls them "HTML's" This is a
critical task to get newly translated material up on the Yizkor Books
Web,

The persons we looking for should (or willing to learn):

- Know how to convert a Word or Excel document into a web page using very
basic html coding. We use simple conversion program called "Arachnophilia"
for doing this but any similar conversion program is fine.

- Be familiar with html coding tags, hyperlinks, SSI files and know how to
include pictures in a web page.

- Generally, the person needs to be organized, able to work independently
and willing to dedicate at least 5 hours a week to the project.

If you can do these things, please be in contact with me,

Joel Alpert, YBIP@...

Vital Records for Lutomiersk, Poland online? #poland #records

Yossi Jalas

I am looking for the scans of the Jewish vital record books for Lutomiersk, Poland.

Genealodzy.pl doesn't have any of the Jewish records for this town and Genbaza.pl has only limited years. Per JRI-Poland most of the records from 1826 onwards survive and a chunk of them were indexed on JRI.

Does anyone know where the scans can be found online? Requesting individual scans from the Lodz archive is a painfully drawn out process....

how to respond to prospective relatives on ancestry #general

Micki Potchinsky

If you write your surname on ancestry family trees you will find a list of family trees with that name.
when I find something that might connect my family however, I do not see a link to contact the
person who posted that family tree.  have others had this problem?

Stephen,
By the way, most of their children came to the US. It's not clear when, but I know that Fruma was here in 1907, because she was married in Nashua, New Hampshire. Sora Feigel died in childbirth. I know the least about Shayla.

Sherri -
Thanks.
Israel and Sora Michla's children, Morris, Louis and Ida came to the US. I think Israel Joseph did also, but I'm not sure. Morris came to the US sometime before 1907. He probably came to the US in 1905. In Russia, Morris was in the Tzar's army, and he played tuba in the army band.

Barbara,

Did Israel and Sora Michla (Margolis) Katz and their children stay in Latvia?

Did they emigrate to another country at some point?

Sharing that info will enable people to offer you research tips.

I've looked at JGFF and the LitvakSIG databases and I haven't found them. I wrote to a number of researchers in the JGFF, and they haven't come upon them either. I know that Svencionys is a good guess because there were a lot of Gilinskys there, but I also have not found them there.

Re: Naming Conventions #names

Roberta Sheps

My father had a friend named Haskel Masters in Saskatchewan whose name had
been Chatskiel. The story is his first grade teacher made the change,
although I think of it more like an adaptation. I don't know what
"Masters" had been. My grandfather's first grade teacher, according to what
he told my mother, (my grandfather, not the teacher) imposed Charles on him,
rather than allowing him to use his original name which was Efraim, which
she thought was absurd.

I received this reply from FTJPHELP on July 10th when attempts to update my tree on the FTJP were not successful:

"We are not processing files at this time."

I was not given any time estimate on when they would be processing files again.

If he crossed as a tourist, it is very likely no record was ever made. You were usually just waived through, particularly if you were a USA or Canadian citizen.

Re: Do old hotel registers exist? #general

Sally Bruckheimer

There are border crossing cards which FamilySearch and Ancestry have. We used to bike to Canadian beaches from Buffalo when I was a kid - you didn't need a plane or a train if you were in the US or Canada. Detroit is the same.  You can walk across the border in lots of places.

There may be old hotel registers, but you would have to ask the hotel, and I bet they aren't interested in looking through them for you. Same with funeral parlors.

Yoel,
I had sent an email to  Przemysław Szpilman at the following email in 2016 beisolam@... with a similar questions. He was kind enough to research and respond.
If interested, there is an article about him on https://www.newsweek.pl/polska/przemyslaw-isroel-szpilman-straznik-zydowskiej-pamieci/zw2lpbs

I visited this cemetery in 2018. There is much restoration. But even with a map,  had a very difficult time locating metsube's. This article may also be of help
