It undoubtedly will vary depending on what software you're using. I use Ancestral Quest, which lists same-sex spouses as Partner1 and Partner2, and shows each partner's gender accurately.

Hi camilleart1,

Yes, I agree with Chuck. It would also be helpful to know if you are trying to go back or forward in time with the family. But in the meanwhile, I have found a few things that seem to relate to the family in the U.S. If you are searching for the descendants of Israel and Rebecca, these names and dates might get you started.

The subscription site newspapers.com published some articles of interest from both Delaware and Pennsylvania. I have attached a few of those postings. Several of them also mention the synagogue the family belonged to which you could perhaps contact for information as well.

From the newspaper names and dates, I was then able to find one family tree for Israel Wainer and Rebecca Gilgore on Ancestry and have attached a brief family chart for them as well as a U.S. passport application with photograph for their son Perry Wainer and a death certificate for another son Max Robert Wainer. The person who compiled that tree might wind up being on JewishGen and contact you through this posting. But if they are not a member, and you would like to try getting in touch, email me privately and I will message them on Ancestry with your email address so they can get back to you directly.

The family grave and headstones can be found on the Find a Grave site through this link:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/32740126

Hope this assists.

Am seeking as much background on the family in Ukraine (and earlier Russia) as possible. Is believed that surname was changed to 'Wainer' during naturalization process when arrived in the US. Uncertain if name was similar in the Ukraine or entirely different. Also possible Zhitomir was nothe family town but an embarkation point following the pogroms.
Please find below additional information:

Israel Jacob Wainer (b. Ukraine on 5 Jan. 1859, d. Wilmington, DE on 27 Feb. 1925)

Rebecca Gilgore (b. Ukraine on 5 Apr. 1859, d. Wilmington, DE on 4 Oct. 1949)

Details on four of their children:

·       Max Wainer, Colonel (b. 1885; d. 1959) fought in France during WWI.

·       Perry Wainer (b. 1888; d. 1962)

·       Isaac J Wainer (b. 1895; d.1971)

·       Louis Juda “Lou” Wainer (b. 1898; d. 1965)

Hi
You need to have some dates and more facts, before you are able to search in Belgium.
Did the marriage took place in NY/NJ or in Belgium? are the children born in NY/NJ or in Belgium?
Did you find them in the census lists in NY and NJ, especially in the year 1900?
Because the 1900 census lists not only the year of immigration but also the year of the marriage.
Did you find their ship manifests or if they were naturalised, their naturalisation papers or passport applications?

Hi Trudy,

I have a same-sex couple in my tree. I use Legacy, which now caters for same-sex couples: you can enter both members with the same sex and also enter them as married. (Previously it was impossible to enter them as a couple without "fibbing" about the sex of one member.) Legacy designates them as "partners" rather than "husband" and "wife".

Keep safe, happy hunting,

While researching, I discovered an old article about whether altruism is genetic. It quoted a Dr. Ervin Staub from the faculty of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.. He was a Holocaust survivor from Hungary. I can't locate a way to reach him, and would like to find if he is related to my late husband Dr. Martin Staub.  Both families emigrated from Hungary. I've Googled, searched the university faculty list, etc. Any suggestions?

I tried the link you provided.  I made the search for a name in the birth register.  The answer was that there were no records that matched my search which was for MEIERSBURG and repeated with MEYERSBURG and FRANK.

The book SZÁZADUNK NÉVVÁLTOZTATÁSAI, published in Budapest in 1895, has the following entry on page 159:

Mervai (Münz) Jakab Ármin könyvvez. Bpest. BM. 80558—89 [indicating that Jakab Ármin Münz changed his surname to Mervai in 1889]

I have found my maternal family in Fokshon (Focsani), Romania but only back to my great grandparents who eventually came to NY.  Their name is NEIBERG (NIEBERG).  Every time I try to do a family search, I only get Scandinavian, non-Jewish results.  Any thoughts?

I request a translation from Polish to English or French for the
following posts I sent through viewmate.
There are 5 posts, but in fact they correspond to one single letter
which is very long and which I devided into 5 parts.
It was written probably within 1939-1940 by my father's sister who was
in Kobylnica Ruska, then in Lemberg with my grandfather and sisters.
My father had left to Italy, then to Tangier where he received the
letter.

> This is my first post on JewishGen. I am looking for any information on the family of Israel Jacob Wainer and his wife Rebecca Gilgore who emigrated from the Ukraine (probably Zhitomir/Zhytomyr) to Delaware (USA) in approximately the 1880s.

Welcome!  If you can give us an idea of what you know and where you have looked so far, we can help you better.  Records for Zhitomir are on line at https://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%84%D0%B2%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%B9%D1%81%D1%8C%D0%BA%D0%B5_%D0%BC%D1%96%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B5%D1%87%D0%BA%D0%BE#%D0%97%D0%B2%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B3%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B4%D1%81%D1%8C%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D0%BF%D0%BE%D0%B2%D1%96%D1%82, but they are in Russian and have not yet been indexed.  The website is in Ukrainian, so I would recommend using a browser such as Chrome, which will automatically translate the website, sort of, for you.

Same sex couples will require both being listed as their own sex, so I am not sure you can put one as husband and the other as wife without messing up the database in other ways.

My aunt and uncle married twice. She married and divorced in-between.  I list both marriages separately, as they would appear on any BMD list that way and also because my aunt considered them to be married twice.

I never thought of even asking a cemetery to take photos.  I have some relatives at Mt Zion and was planning to visit -  but thanks to the suggestion someone made, I did call them today.  The cost is $15 per photo - you must mail a check and explain what you need, and include your email address for the photos.

A word of caution ... not specific to Mt Zion ... but I have heard people paying cemeteries for photos and they get useless photos.  On another forum someone posted the photos she got from one of the area cemeteries which was a lovely photo of the bush that was totally blocking all but the very top edge of the stone, no writing visible at all.  And what's worse the cemetery attached a bill for maintenance for the graves.
